Building highspeed train station away city centre is one way of keeping the overall cost down and a line actually built. The first time I took China 's 350 km/h train in 2010, the station was far from city center and there was absolutely nothing but farmland around it. In 2018 I returned to take train from the same station, it was connected by subway, very easy to get to and surrounding area were all built up. If such an approach were followed, HS2 might stiil have been alive.

Yes - I used the hi-speed network a few times between about 2012 and 2015, and it always involved a out of town station with a bus shuttle. I mention it now, and people say, 'nah - there is a metro link'. I reply - 'there is a metro link NOW, but not when I used the station'. Still remember Chengdu hi-speed station. It honestly made UK *airports* look positively Victorian. And it was a train station! (Had much more of an airport vibe about it though.)

I think it's more down to cost and complexity. Even with these out of town stations the whole project was delayed many times and almost didn't make the opening date. A direct line between central jakarta and bandung would be far more useful. But sure, maybe in 10 or 15 years, halim and padalarang would become massive commuter towns.

13:17 I'm Indonesian resides in Bandung near Tegalluar Station. They choose the area as the terminus station location because in the nearby area, they will build a brand new modern city for business and hopefully the Provincial government complex called Tegalluar City. But the plan is not detailled yet. Nearby the station, there's also a high-class housing complex and large shopping mall which already under construction, a large football stadium in the station access road (Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium), and a new tourist destination not far from the station (Al Jabbar Mosque with beautiful architecture)

At present, there are 554 high-speed railway stations in China, none of which is built in the city center. This is impossible. It is not only a matter of purchasing land. Buildings and high-rise buildings on the ground all cost money. In addition to the huge cost, there are countless traffic roads in the city that need to cross the high-speed railway track and have to be redesigned and built again. The railway track must be built overhead, so how many houses will be demolished is unimaginable. If the station is located in the city center, it will greatly destroy the commercial environment that has already formed along the railway track, and the noise brought about is also a big problem. No country will do so.

Such as Karawang where located outside the Jakarta area, hundreds industries located. Many Japanese, Korean, Chinese and even European expatriates are working in industrial areas but still living in central city, either Jakarta or Bandung. So building a station in far from city area, expected to laverage new cities area, new business center will be built, new hotels, new meeting points, new hospitals, new offices will emerge, which will stimulate economic growth in whole aspects not limited to sell train ticket only

Why Whoosh station in suburban area : 1. If it is build in city center the cost will be very expensive especially for land acquisition. And also traffic nightmare during construction because both Jakarta and Bandung are city with large and dense population 2. Tegalluar station near with Gedebage area. Gedebage is planned to be new administration center for city of Bandung and also Bandung Technopolis 3. Tegalluar located in East Bandung, Padalarang in West Bandung. So this project in the long term also aims to provide equitable development in the Bandung and West Java regions Both Padalarang and Tegalluar station can be reach by multiple type of transportation

And to add, Padalarang makes a lot of sense if you want to connect to the resort region of Lembang. That place gets absolutely rammo during the holidays. Like you say, it would totally make sense to have the trains running to Jogja and Surabaya, since one would argue that Jogja and Solo comprises of the cultural heartland of central Java, with Surabaya also being a major port and centre of commerce. Much like taking the 9:20 from Kings Cross to Edinburgh via York and Newcastle. Similar-ish sorta distances, except you probably won't be subject to a seismic event when you're flying past North Berwick and Dunbar.

12:00 Tegalluar is the eastern suburb of Bandung. The government said that they built the terminus station there to help develop the region more. This is also what China did with their high speed railway system, they built the HSR stations a bit away from the city center. However, some speculations also rises. If they built the new station in downtown Bandung the cost would be much higher as they need to buy expensive lands and relocate many people

Congrats for your experience on the high speed train! For the ticket price, currenrly there is a 50% discount for Economy Premium class till November 30th 2023, so the actual price is 300k IDR (around 20 USD). It's a bit pricey for average Indonesian wages, but the price are bit similar to Eksekutif class (1st class) of conventional train so it still competitive. Not to mention it take 1/3 less time of travel compared to conventional train, and obviously far faster than road that often have traffic jam. For the location of station that quite far from city center, this is due to the expensive land aquisition on the city center, so they choose to built on the edge of town which is cheaper. The foreign country investor, PRC are known for this method when they built the new railway. Also, the company that run the train, KCIC are looking for more land near station area. They want to built transit oriented development area near the station so they can gain profit by land property business. This can't be done in center of city where most of the land are privately owned by the civil, so they built the station on the suburb or even near rural place for cheaper and easier to get land for their property business. What we seen as rural place near the station right now will become a central business area, just like the famous "out of nowhere" Caojiawan Station of Chonqing Metro in PRC that now become developed area. Not to mention there is a plan of moving the central of provincial government of West Java to the Tegalluar area so that make sense.

There were other plans to connect from city center to city center that would include undergorund tunnels inside both cities which would add more cost significantly. They took this one because it’s already expensive and controversial. Jakarta and Bandung are both quite sprawly cities so even if you go to the "central" stations of the old line you will still inevitably spend the better part of an hour (or more) getting to your final destination. Given the extra cost it would have been to go further into the city I think it's an ok trade off. The main problem at Bandung right now is the local bus services are lacking at the new stations.

Wicked video man! Glad you made it over to Indo. Did you manage to get the Parahyangan between Jakarta and Bandung whilst you were there? I used to enjoy sticking my head against the window as a kid whenever it went over the viaducts. I always thought I could make a small fortune doing correct English translations and phonic corrections whenever I went back as a kid to see my family. You mention the seat width - I guess you've probably found out that Indonesian folk are absolutely titchy! If you've ever sat in a Jakarta Kopaja or Mayasari Bakti Patas bus and are of average western frame, you'd probably feel last night satay and this morning's bubur ayam squeeze out of every nether orifice! But yeah, Jakarta Bandung is basically Indonesia's analogue to HS2 and probably should remove a shitton of cars from the Tol road. Biggest difference is you don't have NIMBY Tories telling the programme to stick tunnels through the hills, whereas this line proudly exhibits the vistas for the #trainwindowviews. Although, land reclamation/purchasing for civil infrastructure projects is also somewhat contentious in Indonesia. Also, when I were a sprog, Gambir station was at ground level and to have AC on any sort of journey on Bima or any of the Senja trains, you needed to get executive class. Glad to see things have advanced quite a bit in the old motherland. Improving the rail infrastracture around Java will reduce the congested skies to, but also piss off a lot of the other islands due to the lack of similar mega infrastructure projects.

8:06 is your answer to earlier question. The biggest barrier in any transport project in this most populous island is land acquisition. It is prohibitively expensive both in money and political will to build a viaduct into the historic heart of Bandung. You can see here the inner city highway, another elevated highway, the automated train and the high speed rail all run parallel to save space despite not being the most optimal configuration. Same thing on the east end of the line where the tracks runs beside the highway.

13:18 Answering that question here by quoting Alan Fisher when he reacted to Economics Explained video about induced demand, considering this is also a Chinese HSR issue as well: "It's super impressive that China built their entire network out incredibly quickly, but one of the sacrifices that they had to make to do this was to locate primary stops for individual cities far outside of the city centers. It's a design choice you have to make when you don't want to spend the time and money designing complex ways to build through city centers of metro areas, figuring out how to displace the least amount of people, businesses, and transit routes while staying on time"

At present, there are 600 high-speed railway stations in China, none of which is built in the city center.

Not quite correct, strictly speaking. Xiamen has a high speed rail station in its centre, though admittedly most services don't run through here. Shenzhen has Futian station, right in the centre of the city. I can't speak much for other cities though, and Guangzhounan is very inconveniently located. @@DuChen-py7gl

Locating the stations farther away from City Centers was definitely a cost-saving measure. If they're farther away, the land is much cheaper and the construction will face less obstacles that require costly infrastructure to navigate. This way, the high speed train stations and infra go down more quickly and in a place where the cities expect future development to occur. It's far away from the city center now, but once new metro rail and apartments go up, it will be another node in a polycentric cityscape, and one connected by high speed rail. It's good planning for the future, especially since high speed rail projects like these are systems that will last several generations, potentially even a century or more if they're maintained well.

I have been living in Bandung from 1995 to 2017 and I remember the "good old days" without Jalan Tol .... My record time from Cenkareng Airport to Bandung City was 2 hours 15 minutes and the longes time was 12.00 hours.... At this time you could visit Bandung from Lembang to downtown on the weekend without major traffic but when we left 2017 it was almost impossible. During the 22 years living in Indonesia I spend "feeling 10 years" in traffic because visiting my customer was a painful task .. Now I am retired on a remote island in the Philippines without traffic and enjoying the unpolluted air.. Good luck Indonesia....😊

The original plan (proposed by Japan) was actually for Bandung Station to be upgraded to allow for elevated HSR access. It appears that China has taken the approach that they have used in their home country; to place the stations towards the satellite areas of the city. Not completely sure of any other reason as to the placement of the stations in Bandung
@kibruazkaenk1510

And it will finish in 2030s. Land acquisition is really hard nowadays and going in city center means removing a lot of people. We just do how any other countries do to their new HSR lines, building their stations in city outskirts. But honestly this line is a pretty extreme example of bad planning😂😂

Another factor to consider is the train noise affecting the neighborhood along the HSR. Japanese HSR's operational speed is only 320 km because they want to reduce the noise since they build their stations inside the city area. So building train station outside of the city area can solve this problem, and speed up the project and aslo make it cheaper to build.

Great trip. Finally, you try this Whoosh High Speed Train, and specially this trip is opening of all Indonesian Train Trip Adventures. Talking about LRT, based what I watch on another channel, in current time some Whoosh schedule can't be serve by LRT due to first LRT operating around 6.30 in the morning, meanwhile Whoosh schedule is earlier than this, so if you take early departure, take another transportation mode. 150.000 IDR, also based from video at another channel is just limited time promotional fare for celebrating 8 years anniversary of company, the normal fare of Premium Economy is around 300.000 IDR. The reason of why this station isn't centrally located is due to land acquisition is unbelievably expensive around city centre, and maybe geographical position, especially Bandung since this city sitting on Highlands. Maybe Tegalluar sitting in middle of Nowhere, but not far from this station, there's two main attraction, Al Jabbar Mosque, and GBLA Stadium. Can't wait for another train trip in Indonesia, especially that Railbus 😂😂😂😂
