This video skips over the fact that the 911 GT1 was getting destroyed in FIA GT by McLaren and Mercedes and that McLaren pulled factory support after 1997. By 1998, the only McLarens that the Porsche factory team were racing against were privateers with no factory support. In the '98 FIA GT was a lot like the prior season in that no Porsche won any of the races. In fact, after McLaren pulled factory support, Mercedes was allowed to run rampant and Porsche followed McLaren's lead by closing their GT1 program as well and the GT1 category was pretty much finished at the global level.

The 911 GT1 may have dethroned the F1 GTR, but it was the CLK-GTR’s successor, the CLK-LM, that ended the original GT1 class by absolutely obliterating the opposition in the shorter FIA GT races after its unsuccessful maiden outing at Le Mans.

LM24 wasn't part of the FIA GT calendar so Mercedes went undefeated for 12 races straight from the 1997 Sebring race to the end of the series itself. In fact, between the two seasons of FIA GT, Mercedes won 16 of the 21 races held all victories with either Bernd Schnieder or Klaus Ludwig winning it.

It came down to the last race, with schnitzer breaking down and Mercedes winning with like 1. Point. Same happened with the Oreca vipers vs the gt2 evos.....

The car only won Le Mans by reliability, the Mercedes Benz CLK GTR beat it 10-0 in the FIA GT1 Championship with the older V12 & then V8 version, even it's predecessor in 1996/7 was comfortably beaten by both Mclaren & Mercedes. It was a bang average GT1 car!!

??? McLaren F1 was not even a major competitor in 1998 Le Mans or FIA GT, what are you talking about? In 1998 Le Mans, the real major competitors were CLK LM and TS020... MF1 didn't even have any factory support team in 1998... and 911 GT1-98 basically won by consistency. It was not even close to Merc and Toyota in terms of raw performance. The car that actually killed MF1 was BMW V12 LM. All factory support for MF1 pulled out after 1997 in favor of the BMW V12 LM project. 911 GT1 has never played any part in killing the MF1. MF1 was actually very competitive even in its last factory supported year 1997. CLK GTR had really competitive fights with MF1 in 1997 FIA GT, with it won over MF1 by just 1 race. Also, MF1 was the 1997 Le Mans GT1 Champion, beating the factory 911 GT1-97 by 29 laps...

Mercedes killed the F1 and the GT1 (not to mention but AMG bought a F1, made it a testbed for Mercedes, later put it back together and sold it off in silence). The '98 model followed the "evolution" rule - one road going chassis had to be build with it's improved parts. Please do some more research, the videos are great but they lack information.

this is absolute BS, Mercedes CLK-GTR and CLK-LM were the reason everyone was F-ed and FIA GT was dismissed, absolute, total German DOMINATION, but not Porsche, GT1 won only one race: Le Mans, cos both Mercs quit, Mercedes won everything else, basically humiliated them. So, there were no factory entries for 1999, but Mercedes, and FIA GT was dismissed in its most epic version.

The fact that the 911 GT1 is NOT rear engined is proof it is not a true 911. It was made to order to compete with the McLaren F1 GTR. The McLaren F1 GTR was designed outright as a road legal supercar from the start with the idea of turning it into a race car afterwards. This is the opposite of the 911 GT1, proof that rear engine rear wheel drive was at a diasadvantage. The 911 GT1 needed to be mid engine to keep up with the fight. That philosophy came back to Porsche in 2018 when the Porsche RSR was made mid engine just to be able to compete effectively with its rivals, particularly allowing it to improve its aerodynamic performance. Unlike the 911 GT1, the 2018 RSR maintained her 911 shape but internally, the engine is in the middle.

@@kevinwho. @mingholeung2170 The creator of the carwow channel used to say 'posha'. The old man, who helped him with the SUV tests said 'Posha is a girl's name'. Maybe, but the correct pronunciation is not 'posha', but 'porshe'. Native English speakers can hear and tell the difference between the pronunciation of man and men. The E sound in 'men' is closer to the E sound at the end of Porsche. I know that the English pronounce the letters 'a' and 'e' differently than I do as a Hungarian. But trust me, I (who had a German grandfather) pronounce the name Porsche much better than any native English speaker.

@daviddrew4082 McLaren pulled support because the rules changed allowing for these pseudo-prototypes in a GT class and then later changed the homologation rules to only needing one certified road car. The F1 GTR, still based on a true road car, would not have been competitive so they pulled factory support after 1997.

@ amg won 6/11 races in 97. McLaren winning only 5. This video makes no sense because Porsche wasn’t even a major competitor compared to McLaren so ain’t no way you can say the 98 Porsche dethroned McLaren. It was a year too late.
