Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only converted from one form of energy to another.
The function of the golf swing is to:
1. Control contact (low-point)
2. Produce (sufficient) power
3. Control direction (curve)
A large part of this equation is a constant trade off between repeatable contact (radius management/arms straight) and the production of power (transfer of energy/release). How can you balance these two factors and find the optimal amount of each one for you?
Firstly, you must learn to manage the radius via good wrist angles and the appropriate body pivot. This starts out as a chipping motion, then gradually builds out to more of a long chip or pinch shot. Great for consistency of contact, not optimal for creating/transferring power into the ball.
From the initial drill, you should transition to the HIT HARD, STOP QUICK drill. Adding more speed, helps to create more potential power, while braking quickly after impact helps to transfer that energy from the body, to the arms, to the hands, to the shaft, to the club head, and finally, to the ball.
To help you train the ideal wrist conditions, the Precision Impact training aid from Pure Swing Products is perfectly designed to help you develop the necessary wrist conditions for optimal contact AND power!

Great video as ever Rob. Three things to get right and really only one involving the swing after pre- setting the other 2 - Us older gadges can only cope with 1 swing thought at a time. Such a useful way to practice. 👍

How is the club released if the wrist is locked into position? I am under the impression the wrist release into the back of the ball.

One thing about the Precision Impact device, I use men's small glove and it's not adjustable for size. So the distance between the Velcro fingers and wrist was too long, creating a gap at my wrist causing the device to not fit very securely. Great idea for regular men's hand size but I ended up selling it.

Question: If you are able to hit a 7 iron 169 yards off an artificial mat, why would it be necessary then to take a divot while doing the same thing on the golf course?

Rob -- quick question, does this mean that the right wrist is supposed to stay in extension after impact and throughout the entire follow through? And the "release" is more of a rehinging / radial deviation? I've heard a lot of the right wrist flying wedge at impact, but always thought it "released" at some point after impact. Love your content !!

Hi Rob, I’m a huge fan of your channel and your no nonsense instruction. I’m a former class A instructor and taught in Hilton Head. Although I play golf for fun these days and don’t teach anymore I wish I had subscribed to this line of thought ages ago. It is the Correct way to teach. I acquired the wrist device and practice with it. My only issue and maybe you can shed some light here is that once the device clicks into position, the club is now above the low point of the swing. If I’m trying to keep my head as the center of the radius, in order to return the club correctly at impact, in my swing there has to be lowering. It’s fantastic when I’m successful but I’m experiencing fat and thin shots when I don’t lower enough or too much. Not getting the weight forward enough thru impact? Any thoughts? Thanks Mike

I lost the snap in ball striking when encouraged to get to arms straight after impact. Watching an Angular speed YT video reminded me of the wrist hinge & unhinge and now I have my snap back. Sometimes we go backwards before going forwards.....

You weren't kidding with your title of the video! What a game changer. I saw this video on my way to Golftec SG for a practice session and just wow. This drill was just what I needed. Fixed my huge draws I've been trying to fix and got my drives straight. I could even hit my 3 wood now. Game changer!

I started playing golf late, at 47. I really love golf. Sometimes there's not a lot of love for the game and I have to take some time off. I'm 67 now and I have never bought a training device before other than alignment sticks. They just all seem like gimmicks. I just bought this one using the code you provided. This one just might work. Thanks for all your great golf instruction videos.

What would a basic practice progression look like? Would it be progressive through the different stages you describe (assuming you were proficient at all of them) like 10-10-10 swings? If you were starting from the beginning (with the "chip" swing), would you just practice that for some number of swings per session until you are proficient and then move to the next swing stage? I really like the drill and the video(s), but I feel like I'm just approaching it more randomly than with a plan for progression in mind.

Great video Rod. I knew the drill but I was having mixed results because didn’t understand how it related to the normal swing and I couldn’t relate it at all to chip shots. However, when you explained what the drill’s purpose is ie. slow the body down and lever the arms, I suddenly had a much better idea of what I was trying to do. For me, it helps a lot when I understand the purpose of the drill rather than just the mechanics. Many thanks.

Great video. I've wanted to add a more snap release to my swing but could never comfortably manage the draw it produced. I'll try to add more wrist hinge. But what is your cue to start the slowing of the hands? Is it the lead side extension that pulls the handle upwards? Or maybe you try to stop your hands at a certain point (at full arm extension a few feet in front of the ball)?

I have been working on this drill for a few days now and it has really helped me to get a better feel for the proper follow thru. Prior to, when I filmed myself, I could see some slight flipping at impact even though I did not feel myself doing it. Now I am getting a much better follow thru focusing on the hip tuck too - but that is without any wrist hinge at all so at most a 3/4 swing. Since moving to S&T I have avoided allowing my wrists to hinge. I was still able to get decent distance even with an abbreviated back swing, but I know I could generate a lot more power if I had a good natural wrist hinge. So I decided to pick up one of these training aids. Hopefully the Precision Impact, along with this drill, will help me develop a proper wrist hinge and a more powerful swing.
