In the long history of my search for the ideal fuzz pedal I've discovered that I like pretty much every fuzz in existence, EXCEPT ONE! In this video I revisit the cursed 'Flashback Fuzz' by DOD. I actually bought a new one just to show how bad it is.

Many of the distortions in the FX5x/6x series are essentially the same hard-clipping circuit with variations in how much gain is applied and various selective boosts before and/or after the clipping section. In the case of the FX66 there is a resonant boost before the clipping, which gives it that annoying nasal tone. Hard to see in this pic, because of how things are bent - mirosol.kapsi.fi/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/DOD-FX66-FlashbackFuzz-guts.jpg - but there should be a C6 connected to pin 6 of the chip, and a C7, connected to C6. C7, in turn is connected to a transistor The schematic says C6 is .05uf and C7 is .056uf, but the actual values might be a little different than the pic. These caps set the resonant frequency of that pre-boost. If you disconnect the end of C7 that connects to the transistor, and reconnect it to pin 6 of the chip, the resonant boost is cancelled, and you end up with a gain of around 19x, and a low-end rolloff around 125hz, for that pre-boost stage. So, reasonable bass end and no resonant honk.

I see that Mark Hammer and Theo Lang covered how to remove the cocked wah sound. I couldn't possibly contribute more than they could; but, I will point out that the schematic shares quite a bit in common with the Metal Zone: OP amp gain stages, diode clipping, and gyrators for a big mid-boost. Thanks for making the video, Ryan!

That sounds like it has a rectifier-type inverting circuit or some other topology that flips the negative phase of the waveform; in other words, an Octave fuzz. The nasal sound may be a bandpass filter that, no matter where you position the tone knob, the shape of the filter curve remains a fixed bell shape.

The main reason I continue to be a loyal subscriber to your channel, Ryan, is that you really know your gear. Now, with that said, I don't hate the sound of the DOD Flashback Fuzz, but I don't necessarily like it either. It has some okay sounds, but most times it sounds like it's being funneled through a mic with cupped hands. It's more of a hobbyist's pedal, meaning a mod-job to get it to sound better. The best fuzz pedal of all, in my humble opinion, was the Behringer SF300 Super Fuzz. That bad boy reminds me a lot of the Vox Super Fuzz from the early 70's that people like Pete Townshend of The Who and the original guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hillel Slovak, used. And I cannot believe how cheap it is at $28 on Musician's Friend. I'm definitely going to buy one soon. Keep up the great gear showcases you do, Ryan. You're definitely helpful. By the way, what's the name of your Surf band, and where can I hear some of the music? Do you ever post it on KZbin or anywhere else?

That first tone when you started playing reminds me of MY most hated pedal, the Ibanez Cyberdrive. Every fuzz is beautiful. That’s very much a distortion pedal. If it didn’t say fuzz on it you’d never think it was fuzz. That would work in a lot of contexts like doom or death metal. Totally depends on how you set it and how your amp is set. You’re a surf dude. You don’t grok the metals. I’d bet if you put that in a heavy band setting it might work perfectly. You really can’t judge a pedal or amp without playing it in a band setting. I use the Behringer FZ300 as a boost. And thanks to you, I picked up the Cuvave Gig Reverb-amazing pedal which I’m using completely wrong. I have it in the loop of my amp, with all controls at 0 and it acts like a boost and fattens the sound just so. Thanks, dude!

Ryan, my favorite fuzzes will always be the Boss FZ-2, the Foxx Tone Machine, and the Zoom UF-01 ("the poor man's Fuzz Factory"). But I do find uses for my DOD Flashback. Sometimes that cocked wah sound is just what a lead needs to fit in a mix. And try running the Flashback into a Grunge pedal for an insane swamp of doom/sludge tone (keep the volume down or the feedback could get nasty).

@@garycrant4511 with the amount of obscure gear Mick Ronson unintentionally used and the way the Ziggy album was recirded it's kind of hard to get right. I will say I have heard people get good results with range master copies, more so than a new crybaby cocked.

@@peterlukach310 I've gradually amassed a stupid large collection of treble booster and fuzz clones. Not a boast, just a very bad habit addiction. The 1970s Ronson/Bolan/May Glam Rock tonal range has been imprinted in the very fibre of my being, from way back when I was a teenager in that classic era.. Ronson tone on a restricted budget is good fun trial and error, and different combinations of gear can get fairly convincing. But I recently surprised myself how close I got with a very cheap Chinese Plexi in a box mini pedal, and a cheap basic EQ pedal in front of it. I'd suspect any guitarist who dislikes this Dod fuzz, also doesn't like the mid boost setting on the Boss Turbo DS-2; and is the kind who always keeps their guitar tone and vol knobs permanently jammed on 10...!!!???

@@garycrant4511 May, Bolan, and Ronson all have very good abd very difficult tones to replicate. I guess May would be the easiest as Vox, vox style amps, and treble boosters are a plenty. Also, the BMGs are fairly affordable, and you can always throw some burns pickups into a mustang to get close. Marc just use so many different guitars and amps I feel it might be easy to ball park but hard to dial in perfect. Interesting way to get Ronno tone tho. I guess an EQ can help nail alot of tones. Funny what you said about people who put everything on 10 because I have a feeling mick Ronson was one of those people...

My current favorite Fuzz is the Band of Gypsys Fuzzface....now, it's not over the top or weird....but it is just wooly enough and cuts through just right...

I have a very intense hate/love/hate relationship with my DeviEver Hyperion. It is by far one of the nastiest, grittiest, most aggressive fuzz pedals I've ever used. When it can be tamed (usually with a lot of noisegate and EQ pedal love) its amazing but I can leave the damn thing alone overnight, come back the next day and never find that sound again.

Yeah, the Flashback is really thin and nasty. I have an EQD Terminal fuzz that most people hate too, but unlike the singing elven fuzz that is a silicone Big Muff, the Terminal is Morgul Fuzz, the fuzz that orc parents use to scare their children to sleep at night. Fuzz is supposed to be nasty. Nice guitar, bro !!

That is a piercing distortion-fuzz sound - I actually think it's great ! Like it better than my Grunge Pedal ... could be very usable within the right production. Nothing wrong with it - I'll try to find one used before the price get's stupid .
