I’ve had the experience more than once of seeing a movie all by myself or with only a handful of others. But I saw “Minus One” on Dec. 26 at a matinee showing before a large audience. I did see a lot of getting up and leaving during the film-whether these folks were leaving or just taking a bathroom break, I cannot say. I confess that I found the second act to be a bit draggy, but the film overall was deeply moving and seemed to hold the audience.

After viewing it five times the scene in which Koichi’s face turns from rage against Godzilla into pure despair still hits me in the heart every time. You never feel like you’re watching an actor, it feels real and you could easily imagine the anguish of someone that lived through the atomic bombings. I also loved the relationships the characters have with one another. There are so many little details going on throughout the film it needs multiple viewings to really catch them all. I’m not exaggerating when I say this was the Godzilla film of my dreams. I’ve been a fan of Godzilla since childhood and for over twenty years I have hoped they would do a remake of the original, going back to the post war time period and Godzilla’s roots as a tragic film. This movie came through in spades and surpassed even what I had hoped for.

@@mig1017 yeah, the legendary one is not looking good. Not even addressing the story I can already see from the trailer they have lost that sense of weight and size the other films had. Similar to Pacific Rim 2 where there was no sense of immensity to anything because of how it was animated. It felt like power rangers. Without the weight and humans for scale what's the point of having Kaiju. The first Pacific Rim is still the best example of getting that weighty look right I think, 2014 Godzilla did okay too. I'm still going to see it sometime but I don't know if it will be in theaters

@@jonservo man, I was just commenting on a Pacific Rim 3 video that the 2nd was pale in comparison to the 1st. You hit the nail on the head, there was absolutely zero sense of scale in the sequel. Tried watching it a few times but gave up. Wanted to like it but it just isn't their 😂
@jonservo

@@mig1017 wait, there’s a third one coming out? Oh dear. In my opinion Pacific Rim was a perfect example of the “fun” kaiju movie. Semi serious but big focus on the action. I still watch it every so often. The sequel, was just awful. Godzilla x Kong looks like it’s modeling some of its plot after Godzilla vs Megalon which is one of the worst G films. Even as a fan I can admit it’s bad, so I think it’s a mistake to move in that direction.

My favorite and most recent movie theater experience was seeing Godzilla 2014 with my Dad. We were both long-time Godzilla fans, and were very disappointed with the 1998 version. That all changed when Godzilla slowly charged up his blue atomic breath and blew the female Muto completely away, And then later performed the kiss of death on her too. The entire theater burst out into cheer and applause, I never experienced anything like that before it was like a long time dream come true seeing Godzilla finally get respect on the big screen in an American movie theater.

You will enjoy more if you know Japanese secrets of Godzilla. Let me ask you following questions. Q1. Why did Godzilla come to Ginza and mysteriously disappeared from the movie? This is same as the movie Sin-Godzilla and original 1954 Godzilla. In case of Sin-Godzilla, it was Tokyo station, and original 1954 Godzilla, he came to the Japanese parliament building but gone. Why? And why the locations are so important? Q2. After Godzilla died, why the people on the ships saluted him? In the 1954 Godzilla movie, people sang the beautiful music like a funnel and in Sin-Godzilla, end of Godzilla’s tail shows human like figures. All these are related. So why? Q3. Why does Japanese Godzilla walk like a Noh-theater actors? Is it because he is some kind of divine god? To answer these questions, you need to know followings. First of all, there are still many dead Japanese soldier’s bodies not recovered from deep Pacific oceans. We could not even give them proper funnels. We know all of them wanted to come back, but they couldn’t. Godzilla is Tatari-gami(kami:god) of Odoh Island. Tatari-gami is a god of curse and give judgement. In Shinto religion, one of the most important jobs for a priest is to calm Tatari-gami down. Emperor of Japan is a living deity and highest priest of Shinto. Please take a look at map of Tokyo. You see Ginza, Tokyo station and the Japanese parliament building are all in front of imperial palace. Japanese soldiers are emperor’s soldiers and they should be back to Yasukuni-shrine to rest. By the way, Yasukuni-Shrine is locating next to imperial palace. Godzilla is Tatari-gami and spirits of dead soldiers are in Godzilla. However, Godzilla is also cursed by the atomic radiation. So, he finally came back to Japan to rest, but he is a monster now and not welcomed. Godzilla was looking for his resting place (Yasukuni-Sherine), but he cannot find it. Godzilla screamed in Ginza with sad madness. By the way, the screaming was so important, director Yamazaki rented entire baseball field to record the scream sound. It was most costed part of the 15 million dollars movie. All Japanese movie directors want to portrait Godzilla like a divine figure. That is the reason Japanese Godzilla walks like a Noh-theater actor. Entire movie is a ritual and a process to calm down the Tatari-gami (Godzilla), and give him proper funnel. Only problem is Godzilla is curse by US atomic-bomb and the radiation, so he cannot die and continue to be Tatari-gami. Noriko has affected by G-cell. As Koichi’s war ends, but Noriko’s war has just started. This reminds us the suffering of many survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki from radiation. Many of them have to live rest of their long life in pain and agony. Question is, did our war truly ended? By knowing these secrets, you will enjoy Godzilla movie more.

Japanese secrets?I am a Japanese woman. I saw Godzila movie from the first one. But I've never heard of the idea that Godzila was trying to find the shrine to rest. Where did you get the idea? The director of this movie, Takashi Yamazaki, said on tv the other day that he decided that the time this Godzila appears would be the best time just after the war ended, resembled zero. When people lost everything and then an even more disastrous creature appeared. It keeps destroying famous buildings so easily. Oh, my goodness, that famous building in Ginza, too! It is just a heart pounding entertainment movie.

Dear Miko, I am so glad that you have responded to my comment. The theory that Godzilla is "Eirei" (Souls of dead Japanese soldiers), has been very faoums among Godzilla Otaku for many years. Many believe original Godzilla (1954) was made with this idea and GMK, Sin-Godzilla, Godzilla - 1.0 have been influenced by it. So that's why, I said "a Japanese secret". At least this theory makes Godzilla movie more fun to watch.

Both of my grandfathers served in WWII and I married a Korean woman whose mother was born and raised in Japanese occupied Korea. I am also a history teacher who had a few Pearl Harbor survivors as friends so this film hit all the right personal spots for me. It was very engaging and extraordinarily well made. No need to comment on anything else since you said it already. Everything from the acting, directing, visuals and sound direction was as near pitch perfect as anything I have seen. It wasn't even on my radar until I heard trusted voices raving about it. I am glad I took their advice. That being said, I think my favorite cinema experience so far is a toss up between Avengers (2012) and Dr. Who's 50th (2013). I was at the Avengers film with a few friends and the movie hadn't even started yet when the entire front section erupted in a loud cheer. Apparently someone coming in tripped and launched their popcorn everywhere. I knew then that it was going to be a good time. As for the 50th--Tom Baker. Nuff said.

After the first city attack, I asked myself, is no one going to acknowledge that a creature of unknown origins created an atomic bomb with a greater yield than any atomic bomb seen before? I saw TMNT in Theaters when I was 5. It is also my favorite movie. I can't remember much from back then, but what I do remember is my dad took me to see it, but didn't tell me what we were seeing and wouldn't answer me when I asked. And then when the music started, and The Logo Freezes on the screen. I remember I gave a shout of excitement, and again when Leonardo Jumps out and all the Turtles are revealed. The only time that feeling was ever truly recaptured was when Godzilla rises out of the Ice in the new King of the Monsters to Face Ghidorah and the classic theme starts to play. Saying that, this is still the Best Godzilla movie in my opinion, and just a damn good movie overall.

This was my first godzilla movie. I always try to watch movies in theaters blind, and I'm really happy I did that for godzilla minus one (and evil dead rise too, which was also my first evil dead movie LOL). I remember some people in theaters not understanding the movie was japanese with eng subs, so they were a little frustrated, but by the end they went "hey, that was a pretty good movie." I really liked the protag and appreciated the makeshift family that came together in this story. I liked your review, and it was funny too. Got yourself a new sub! You should absolutely go and watch Shin Godzilla when you can: I actually think it's still a smidge better then Minus One, and is similarly grounded and likewise portrays Godzilla as an actual horror and threat rather then just something you cheer on for spectacle, and if you can believe it, it's Atomic Breath scene absolutely matches Minus One's as well. Shin also I think has even better directing and shot composition (it was directed by Anno, of Evangelion fame). I will say though I think Minus One has it beat in terms of characters and pacing: Shin still has a worthwhile narrative and themes, but it's less about the emotional journey of specific characters and more about the collective response towards Godzilla: Minus One played a bit with those themes with the Japanese Government's inaction and irresponsibility and the community coming together in response, but for Shin that's the main theme rather then personal guilt/trauma. Both Shin and Minus One though are easily in the top 5 best Godzilla movies ever made, if not top 3. (My personal top 3 would be Shin, Final Wars, and Minus One, though Final Wars is very much the complete opposite of both Shin/-1: Final Wars is balls to the walls nonstop over the top rule of cool insanity!)

there's an old interview with Bruce Lee in which he talks about how asian cinema (namely hong kong) unfortunately wasn't up to the 'gold standard' in terms of acting, but he hoped that one day they'd achieve equal quality with Hollywood needless to say, it's wildly impressive how far the general region's cinematic offerings, from actors to production, have come in such a relatively short time anyway, one thing i really loved about both Shin Godzilla and Minus One is how much respect they showed Godzilla, not just as a monster but as the icon he is; i feel like the salute at the end of Minus One might go largely unnoticed but it's such a nice touch

My opinion of the film is that Godzilla is the manifestation of Koichi's demons, his Oni as they are called in Japan. If another main character in a G Film has had this level of a connection to the big guy let me know cause off hand I can't think of one. Godzilla represents Koichi's feeling of survivor's guilt, PTSD, and cowardice. Notice that each time Godzilla appears in the film until the final act, he destroys something tied to Koichi. He is a punishment on Koichi, which is why it is Koichi himself who has to destroy Godzilla. He must face his demons in order to overcome them. It's this personal angle that I believe has played a huge part in audiences worldwide connecting with the movie.
@MellowMutant

@albion65
@albion65 6 ай бұрын
@@MellowMutant thank you. This idea that he is Koichi's bane came to me one someone asked to explain Godzilla's motivations in this film. That was when I thought about how each time Godzilla attacks it is near Koichi, and yet the Big Guy never seems to try and kill him. Godzilla heaps punishment on Koichi till he finally decides to face him head on. I think the last time they tried to directly connect the main character of a Godzilla movie to the Big Guy was in the anime trilogy with the character of Haruo Sakaki. However his hatred and desire to kill Godzilla made him seem arrogant and antagonistic instead of sympathetic. It didn't work, he came off as the real villain of the piece. We sympathize with Koichi cause we understand the absurdity of the kamikaze planes with the hindsight of history. We want to see him overcome his demons in a way we didn't with Sakaki. We want to see Koichi get on with his life, we want to see Sakaki get squashed like the insignificant ant that he is.

As expected, I am getting littered with every Tom, Dick, and Harry's analysis on this latest release. Some people have compared the acting style to anime, as if someone was imitating that style in live action. I can see that, but would argue it’s just a different style acting than some more awarded performances in the west. There are a plethora of styles and I feel they are all good as long as they serve the store well and keep you engaged. I would argue this film does that very well…but I would say the two times Koichi and Noriko embrace do feel awkward and weird, like they had to practice what it’s like to touch another human before shooting those scenes.

Godzilla (Gojira) in Godzilla Minus One represents the devil, Satan, who was cast down from heaven and who has come to earth filled with great WRATH. -- And in this movie Godzilla has a personal vendetta against Koichi, much like the devil had with Job in the Holy Bible. At the beginning of Minus One, Godzilla attacks the island Koichi is on. -- (We don’t see God Almighty’s conversation with Godzilla where they talk about Koichi, before the film began, where God asks Godzilla if Godzilla has ever seen a man as great and wise and brave as Koichi, someone who would be bold enough to refuse being a kamikaze idiot in Japanese culture. THAT is bravery, because the Japanese culture, in large part, wrongfully so, would look down on anyone who refused to commit suicide for their country, as we see by Koichi’s neighbor Sumiko attacking Koichi for coming back to his neighborhood alive, as if death is better than life, which is another theme in the film, one that “Doc” address towards the end when he gives his speech about Japanese culture not loving life, but being careless with precious life, which the Japanese have clearly grown out of, as evidenced by Studio Ghibli and this latest Godzilla film. -- Anyway, off screen before the film starts, if you can use your imagination, spiritually speaking, Godzilla then makes a deal with God and says that Godzilla can break Koichi, and so we have the movie.). -- How do I know this? Because Godzilla singles out Noriko when he attacked the train. Why would Godzilla do that unless he knew where Noriko was and who she was to Koichi? -- the key to understanding this secretive and spiritual theme that was weaved into this movie is understanding how the climax of the film played out. -- Koichi risked his life and sacrificed himself to save everyone, and we the audience are made to think that Koichi is dead briefly, for a few moments, which represents Christ being buried for about three days after He was crucified. -- Then we see that Koichi ejected from the plane at the last moment and he is still alive, just as Jesus was resurrected on the third day. (Ejected rhymes with resurrected🙂) Koichi represents Jesus. Godzilla represents Satan. -- In the Holy Bible, there is a verse that talks about why Jesus came down to the earth: “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8 New King James Version) -- in this version of Gojira, Godzilla is pissed off from the very beginning until the end and will kill anybody. The monster isn’t even hungry like in the American version of Godzilla; he just likes to murder. There’s only one being on this present earth who is that upset - the devil. - Godzilla Minus One is my new favorite film -
