Godzilla Minus One, the latest Japanese Godzilla film, recently hit theaters and it has made quite the impression. People from all walks of life are not only calling it one of the best Godzilla films ever... but also one of the best films of the year. The latter sentiment is an insanely interesting reaction for a Godzilla film in the same year that saw films from cinematic legends like Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, and Hayao Miyazaki. So here we'll take a close look at director Takashi Yamazaki's bold new imagining of the king of the monsters and how it took the world by storm.

I really preferred G-1 to Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer had a great and nuanced character study, but I didn't like the flow of that film. There was too much constant plot exposition, flashbacks and flash-forwards without a few seconds for the audience to reflect. In short, it was tiring to watch. The flow and rhythm of G-1 made it more enjoyable to watch.

I honestly didn't have a favorite Godzilla film until I saw Minus One. The reason I love Minus One is because of the human story and the sense of scale with Godzilla. Just a week or so before this movie came out, I tried to OD but failed.. While I know simple overdosing and surviving a whole-ass war are COMPLETELY different, this movie still resonated with me absurdly, seeing Koichi going from wanting to live, being ready to die, and wanting to live all over again. This movie will definitely always be a part of me solely for that, let alone how good it was.

I've seen so many people asserting that this movie is just apolitical entertainment, and that that somehow makes it better than Hollywood movies, and I'm just like.. that's such a disrespectful disservice to this movie and its message. The entire premise is built off the back of a sociopolitical criticism of Japan that not only still applies to it, but to damn near every other country as well, and it's frankly infinitely more political than any movie I can see that's currently in theaters, and that's a GOOD thing.

It's political, but unlike Hollywood movies it's more about the politics of military, government, and civilian affairs, which are fairly universal, if somewhat more specific to Japan in this case. Western films are not about universal political themes, they are just blockbusters that needlessly inject 21st century identity politics.

@@Peasham No it's true, the anti-war notations in this film and their view on their government due to the war is a more universal sentiment to anyone who can think for themselves or know history. Hollywood keeps throwing in these modern ideas that only appeal to select people yet they keep wanting to hammer it on everyone and it's woefully apparent. This movie has a message but it is one that everyone can appreciate as it calls on more natural human values with a background people are aware of being post WW2.
@Peasham
@Peasham 6 ай бұрын
@@FairyFarron The idea that the Japanese government exclusively is bad is by no means a universal idea, I'm sorry, whereas identities are universal, every single person has one. The characters of this movie also have identities that are vital to the movie and its story, if their identities were different this story would cease to function entirely, as it's also a mockery of Americans, white people, who de facto soft-colonized Japan in 1947 yet were completely unwilling to help them in any particular way. The vast majority of people cannot relate to being Asians who are colonized by the west, nor can they relate to having PTSD, nor can they relate to not marrying someone who's practically begging for it. Practically nothing in this movie is relatable to anyone outside of Japan, yet that doesn't stop it from being an excellent movie that makes you care for its characters. I wonder how that works.

Loved the callback to Raymond Burr's speech at the end of 1985. That's actually my favorite G film. All the solo Toho Godzilla films have had an anti government slant to them and were in response to actions (or inactions) of the Japanese government. I feel that Return of Godzilla in particular does this in a much more subtle way than 1954, Shin, or GMO. It was also the first Godzilla film I ever saw, so it holds a special place in my heart and will likely always be my favorite. Having said that, I feel that GMO is the best G film ever made. Even more than the original, and I know that some folks would consider that to be blasphemous. I love the original film and it's a cinematic masterpiece and captured the fear and trepidation of the Japanese people not even a decade after WW2. GMO is a very similar setup, but focuses more on the people that were affected and how they responded to the war and what followed. The fact that it was a civilian force that chooses to end Godzilla means so much. These people's lives are in ruin. Literally for some, and they find the strength to defend their country from this overwhelming threat. We seldom see the direct aftermath of WW2 on the Japanese in Wester cinema. The Japanese people were a victim of their own government as well as of the Allied forces and this film doesn't shy away from showing that. The human characters were written so well I would watch a film of just them in the rebuilding of Japan after the war. There have been a few human characters over the 70 years that I've thought stood above the rest but somehow this entire cast did. Great video. I'm glad the algorithm blessed me with it today.

I'd say its honestly on the pair and equal to the 54 movie and above Shin (Shin is not something I would to casual viewers due its very particular style of film making). Until now, my favorite Godzilla film was Honda's original--it was a revelation when I saw the original Japanese cut (no Raymond Burr) at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge. I had the realization that this whole series of often goofy movies had started with a film of stature that wasn't afraid to be utterly bleak and raise impossible human dilemmas. Some of the subsequent Toho films, such as Godzilla vs. Destoroyah and GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, seemed to be grasping for that level of gravitas and not quite getting there. (I have not seen Shin Godzilla, so that might well have done better.) Now, though, I do think the 1954 Godzilla has at least an equal.

As for my favorite, I have to go with GMK. While it has some flaws like the heroic monsters dying then getting back up a few too many times, it's overall a blast. When people ask me what's a good Godzilla film to start with, I either recc that or the 2014 reboot usually. It's the movie even non-Kaiju fan friends of mine have enjoyed immensely as well. I mean...I'm not hypnotized by Minus One's success like so many others. No one seems to admit that the best CG was in the trailers. Everything else in the movie is wonky at best. There are pacing issues and cliche "Ah! Suddenly I have the answer"! So...all this is just deja-vu back to Shin Godzilla...when we said the same thing. So...this is the greatest Godzilla since Shin. The NEXT Godzilla from TOHO...will be the greatest AGAIN...since Minus One.

I kind of agree. It wasn't terrible. But it didn't exactly blow my socks off either. Especially since it was yet another back to basics restart, that will most likely be a one-off.

People aren’t hypnotized by the success. The fuck kind of narrative did you just create people saw the movie and then they loved it and that’s all there is to it. Nobody is claiming that the CGI was perfect. There’s not a single movie where it is. Besides some smoke and the dream scene the effects were great. I know you probably haven’t thought of this yet, but maybe people just really like this one more than Shin Godzilla. Get your head out of your ass

There are multiple serious Godzilla films. The original, the majority of the Heisei, Godzilla x Mechagozilla, Tokyo SOS, Shin Godzilla, Minus One, but only a couple manage to carry emotional human weight.

Also really sad that the director, Yamazaki said that him writting about the Japanese goverment not doing anything after the Ginza attack to stop Godzilla and the speech about people needing to come together to solve problems when the government refuses to help.That it was inspire by the japanese goverment's slow and eventual halfassed reponse to the COVID pandemic. meaning both Shin Godzilla and -1 had the same criticism about the same people dealing with 2 different major crisises almost 10 years apart.

@@zonzillamagnus5902 man the fact that you're allowed to operate a motor vehicle with such a dysfunctional brain is fucking terrifying. why is this movie in particular attracting so many right-wing brainlets? its a shame that people with intact frontal lobes cant discuss the movie or watch any reviews of it without some conservative basement-dweller coming around and claiming its only good because it's "nOt PoLitIcAl" despite being a movie with extremely obvious political themes.

I was honored to see it in theater. Almost went over my head until I saw a poster for it seeing another movie. I was like "ok, authentic Godzilla in my local theater... I'm there." I was prepared to shell-out for $50 for two IMAX tickets, but they already took it off. We were thinking aww, no big deal.... Woulda been so worth it. Regardless, really looking forward to more of the Godzilla renascence to come westward.

As a showa era fan, I did not expect a non showa era Godzilla film besides Shin Godzilla to be this good. So good infact that it tops every Godzilla film as my favourite in the series.

I agree I like it better than Shin and in some ways I like the as much as the original 54 Godzilla. I agree with what people are saying that it would be great movie even if there was no Godzilla. I like the Godzilla movies where even when the big G isn't on screen he still pushes the movie forward . Even when Godzilla isn't on screen he stills feels like he is there, waiting in the background. lurking like a shadow, like a monster. and I also agree with those saying it is the best film of 2023

As far as the action goes I prefer shin...there was a lot more going on godzilla had more screen time and it was more grand than minus one. But I did like minus one godzilla entrance more...when that theme song came on I was like this is what I'm talking about. I nodded my head proud to be a fan. I just wish minus one had more action in it. Just a tad more but it was good nonetheless

I think the original is probably the best Godzilla movie, but vs. Biollante might technically count as my ‘favourite’. That good 80s music, the action movie feeling for the humans, and it introducing Miki.
