The maple neck they put on those LPs is likely to be more resistant to break then the mahogany they typically put on.. It's cheaper to manufacture and you still get that Les Paul tone and vibe.. However, those 490 pickups are very good but too my ears and experience, are not as good to handle gain and keep definition when loaded with gain then the Burstbuckers.. However for blues with moderate overdrive they sound great.. As you say also that satin finish makes the guitar have a more resonant feel to it but it's thin and will wear out faster.. Which isn't a bad thing for those who like the relick look..

Very happy with my tribute Goldtop. Pickups have just the right amount of bite and plenty of sustain and bloom. The neck is thinner than I normally like in a LP but I'm getting to where I prefer it. I don't like the satin finishes on these and they wear away very very quickly, especially on the neck. I oversprayed mine with a few coats of clear nitro and buffed it out to a nice mellow gloss. Other than that I haven't been tempted to mod it at all. The good stuff is all there.

I have a 2018 Tribute, that year they made all mahogany versions. Its definitely my favorite guitar. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. Usually people's initial passing over of this guitar is visual in nature. But it comes with the toggle switch washer and a pick guard. Once you add these I actually like the look better than the standards that have a finish. I swapped out the pickups because I don't really care for the 490's. I have Seymour Duncan WLH's and Ive got push/pull pots for coil splitting and phase reversal of the neck pick for that Greeny tone. Its a straight up riff machine. Love it.
@jerrymorgan1752 Жыл бұрын
I had purchased one from Sweetwater last year. After having it for two days, I had to return it. The fretboard was slightly smaller than the neck that it was glued to and you can feel the side of the neck needing to be sanded down. This was a dealbreaker for me.

I tried one at Guitar center a few weeks ago. It looked beautiful, played nice and sounded good. The rosewood fingerboard was not flush with the neck, not even close. I have never seen another guitar where the neck was wider than the finger board, it was a big gap too, more than you would believe unless you saw it. The entire length of the neck consistently wider that the rosewood like they did it on purpose ( I am sure they did not design it like this, but they let it go through QC like this as an acceptable amount of difference) I showed the guy at guitar center and he said he sees QC issues with real USA made Gibsons all the time. I was really disappointed. I just can't believe it. The guitar was like $1300 or something. I looked at several different Les Pauls and they all had issues, even one that was $2400, had uneven binding. The Epiphones I saw did not have these issues. Makes no sense.

@@edwardprete that price is a little steep, but most Epi s are fair, reasonable, they’re usually far better than “just ok” considering their price-points. I’d have zero problem recommending an Epi to a student just starting out (y’know, a student that might give up at the beginning). I adore Casinos, for real !! I feel like there must be a way to address the branding issue, especially because they ARE gig-worthy after you do a thorough setup. I’m sure there is a psychological or marketing technique that could be implemented to get us all to stop thinking: “ha ha, price is more important to you than factors that matter to experienced & involved players…” really, because I full on-admit that what brand is on the headstock does matter to me, even though through MY ENTIRE LIFE ppl whom I respect have explicitly told me: “how it sounds, and how it feels in your hands is what really matters.” I think Epiphone *could* wash its hands of the “I see you got the cheaper version” stigma. And similarly: over $3000. USD for a Gibson 330 is too much. I get that “perceived value” thing, and I WOULD prefer a Gibson, but I couldn’t take a $3,500. guitar to the pubs I play… 🤷♀️

@@Phoenix_cataclysm_in_2040 Dude, you hit the nail on the head when you wrote: “price themselves outta the market.” Your statement immediately got me thinking about real-estate: How a house or building seller won’t allow normal market forces to push them into charging less. They’ll sell to a company like BlacKRoc at a price too high for the ‘average Joe’ wanting to buy a house to raise his family in. Properties sit empty, investment portfolios and real-estate speculators can afford to hold onto them… It’s like people who aren’t even into music buying up all the good vinyl from your local GoodWill, and collectors who might not even PLAY buying up expensive (and pretty) Les Pauls.

I bought one in 2020. Problems right out of the box. All pots scratchy and one volume pot failed completely after a few weeks. Sharp frets all the way up the neck. Action was too high even with the bridge all the way down. Even the stamped serial number was not done properly because the wood of the back of the headstock was uneven. You get a nice picture of the guitar on the bench for inspection but I think the guy went out for lunch and never checked out the guitar.

I bought a LP Tribute on sale several years ago and love it. The pickups are "chunky" and great for blues, rock and even 'fusion'. They are not as articulate as Lollars (for example) but I love their vibe. It is also weight reduced which makes it easier to play. And the neck is thinner than many Les Pauls and I really prefer this. I had an Epiphone Goldtop "Chinese Custom Shop" LP with Seymour Duncan pickups and I loved their tone. It was a nice guitar. But the neck was a more traditional 'thick' style and I was not crazy about it. So I loved the Tribute and wound up selling the Epiphone.

These LPs are by far the best value in their range while still feeling and sounding great. Thanks Edgar 😊👍

Hey, and what about the case?? Is the greatest soft case that you can get. I have a Standard, a 2014 Futura and a Studio. And yes, how great the Studio is. Alsot his doesn't apply to SGs at least in my experience. I had a Tribute, but then I sold it and keep my Epi Korean flametop upgrade with 57 classics and is a beast.

Your video is right on the money! The Gibson Les Paul Tribute looks and sounds great! Excellent value!

The Tribute is a good value as far as Gibson is concerned. It’s nearly the same thing as the new Epiphones with Gibson pickups. But my favorite value Les Paul is the Traditional Pro V. Normally they are $2k, but if you wait for a sale, you can sometimes find the satin version for around $1500-1800 brand new, and it has higher quality PAF style pickups, pearl inlays, and the option to either coil spilt or coil tap, a phase in/out switch, etc. And you get a hard shell case instead of a gig bag. Way more features for not much more than the Tribute. (in my opinion)

I’d much rather spend a couple hundred bucks more to support US manufacturing. As a US resident and blue collar worker, I like supporting the home team. I advocate for bringing manufacturing back to the states so if I didn’t practice what I preach it would make me a hypocrite. I’m not sure why anyone would settle for the “knockoff” when you can get a US made Gibson for a few bucks more.

Thx, Shane, for another great video. I agree 100%… I just got an LP Tribute and it’s become my main guitar, even more so than my LP Classic. I got one of these new for $US998. A total steal and a huge value. I also don’t have to stress about a ding or keep it locked away unplayed for safety. Thanks for the always informative and inspiring videos!

I have a 2017 one and prefer it to all the Standards and Classics I have played, they're awesome. I may also have the SG and Les Paul Special Tribute models as well......🙄

Nice amp and pedals help create that tone. I'm happy with my Artist 59 golx top.

Nice vid demo! I've played it in the shop a few times - very nice guitar and I like the no-nonsense design and the satin finish. Back and forth with the Epiphone / Gibson 1959 Ltd. Edition (also satin) and ended up buying the Epiphone, it was actually a bit cheaper even though pick-ups, wiring etc. are all from Gibson US.

I love my Les Paul's and if you want in on the game and don't wanna cry buying one go used guys or search for those clearance models. My main Axe is Les Paul Traditional Pro IV that I got for 1700 instead 2400 because they needed to make space for me guitars.

I also got a Les Paul special for 500 used love that thing gig with ut all the time. Deals are out there it doesn't have to be new and if you can live with a fee quirks you open yourself up to so many fantastic guitars.
