Also also... I think you should be incredibly proud of all the wonderful, helpful and informative content you have created over the years. You've no doubt helped thousands of people all over the world improve and grow their love for the game. All from your passion for the game, and your desire to share and help others. It's really admirable and inspiring! You are the lady in yellow doing the Ronaldinho drill (metaphorically speaking) for so many people around the world. And that's kinda cool how you've kinda come full circle. Ps. Hope you, Mimi and the baby are doing well. Please can we get another version of that interior design challenge you two did together years ago. I really enjoyed that and would be interesting to see how your styles have changed. Okay, enough yammering from me. Much love, peace ❤

@@RottenlyMoodyChild Thank you so much for all the kind words! Haha definitely remember being yelled at by the guy in the empty parking lot and losing the +$100 ball into the river on one of the first passes haha. Crazy how long ago that feels. It's so cool to think about how I might've come full circle on KZbin like you mentioned. It's surreal to think about myself in that way, because I don't really stop and think about that. A tip to everyone: Contact a team in your area. The best decision I ever made was to ask to contact a random team in my area. That is how you grow as a player. Even if they are better, you still learn to grow by playing and trying harder. Seriously, the worst case is that you get a "No". Then you try again and fail better. Join or even start a team with the company you work at. Best of luck everyone!

I coach 8- 10 year olds and most are new to the game. You're right about the paralysis by analysis. Tons of info out there. Trying to find the right mix and balance to keep everyone learning and focused, can be challenging. @@Arabiangigachad While there is a blithe tone to your comment, the message actually has a lot of merit. The main job of a youth coach is to set up situations for the players to learn as opposed to teaching them to play. Matt, y’all should try playing half court inside the 18. You need 2-3 teams and a goalie. The team size can be anything from 1s to 5s. When a team scores they stay on and the third team has to progress the ball from the goal line inside the six out of the 18 to activate their possession. When possession changes, inside the 18, you have to get the ball outside the 18 before you can score. It’s extremely high passed and intense.

The Ronaldinho drill is unmatched. My kid is 9 so I have him stay in the cones for about 15 seconds and then tell him to go score. Where he then has to escape out and take a shot within 2 touches of exiting. He loves it. He calls it the minefield drill. So to play up on that, I put in a rule thst if he hits a cone, he then has 6 seconds to pull off 3 different skill moves in order to defuse the mine and not be blown up. It's his favorite drill to do and noticeable improvement comes quick. After only 3 weeks of doing it 2-4 times each week, he was finally starting to use some of his moves and touches in games, and also just making decisions quicker. I didn't even care that he was making a lot of bad decisions. Simply making any decision quickly was a major step forward. And, of course, the decision makong naturally improved in time.

Awesome consolidation of what could otherwise be really overwhelming content. I am curious if you have thoughts on drills for younger players? I love your videos! Thank you so much for making content that's clear and easy to understand. And that focuses on practical skills to help players develop instead of flashy drills to get clicks! And knowing it comes from someone with legit credentials is awesome! Do you have any drills you recommend for teaching basic skills to young kids (7 years old) who are true beginners? I'm coaching my son's 2nd grade team in a casual city rec league. Most of them have trouble passing or shooting more than 5-10 yards and they have very little concept of getting open for a pass or attacking the ball instead of waiting for it. I played in some rec leagues when I was younger, but never played competitively or got serious coaching, so I don't have a great base to draw on. I don't care if we win or lose, but I would like to help the kids get better, and more importantly see the improvement themselves. Most of the videos I've found online that say they're for "beginners" or young kids assume a skill level that is way higher than my team. And the drills they recommend (while cool and fun) are so complicated that we would end up spending half of the practice (we only get 1 hour 1 day per week) just teaching them how to do the drills instead of actually working on the skills. I would love to find drills for individual skills like ball handling, passing, and shooting. And also for team skills like field awareness, positioning, and challenging the ball.
@BecomeElite

Appreciate all the kind words! If you are coaching true beginner level players around that 5-8 year range and you only have them for an hour... I really think you keep it as basic and as fun as possible. I would focus on really, really simple passing lines where they just work on passing the ball 2-5 yards to a teammate (work on passing and trapping with both feet), dribbling through lines of cones or around a zig zag of cones with a simple pass into a mini goal, and then just have them play 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 games to mini goals. Honestly the best thing you can do at that age is get them to get a ton of touches on the ball and just have them play. As they get older, more skilled, and develop longer attention spans that's when you can start to complicate the drills and bring in more complex topics. Like you said, if you only have an hour with them you want them to spend 55 minutes playing with the ball and you talking only like 5 minutes haha.

His off season series has many examples. However, most of these are actually not very effective for large groups unless you have very motivated players or a couple top quality assistant coaches. I usually reserve these types of activities for my practice sessions of eight or fewer players. When I have larger groups, I have them scrimmage with added rules to get the point across. 1vs1 activities to end zones, 1vs2, 2vs3, up to 4vs 4 should be at least half of every practice.

these drills are mostly great for solo sessions. I dont know how young your youth team is, but probably THE best team drill for youth teams is funino. play on a small side with small teams and many goals. Big goal of your training should be to maximize the touches and engagements/ 1v1s of your players. If you have no kids standing around or in line over the whole training, you did well id say :) But i wouldnt do many individual drills, because they dont bring your kids into game realistic scenarios. Play around with minimum contacts, amount of goals, amount of teams, size of goals, only allowing forward passing or even changing the size of the ball. Be creative in game realistic settings and always try to challenge as many kids as possible at the same time (for example dont play 8vs8 for a long time when 16 kids are in this day, because every kid has more touches and 1v1s when you play 4v4 twice). I know that wasnt your question, but since you seemed like a motivated coach i hope this still brings some value to your coaching :)

I found a suitable level for me and just had fun with the football, like childhood when you just played for the fun and love of it. My point is just play for fun, go about your life and take it for what it is, a lot of fun and the art of mastering the play regardless of what level you play at

A lot of these skills my kid gets work on at his club practices. But what about position specific drills? At what age do you start those and do you yourself do fullback specific drills or do you feel these cover that well enough?

Hi Matt, great video! How do you measure progress on these drills? Especially after you've reached your level as it seems like you've really mastered all these drills. Asking because I struggle to know when is good enough or at what point do I really see it translate on the pitch. Thanks!

I have a serious question as a Winger Matt please help me Q - How do you curl the ball so easily I am suffering with the contact area of foot Please help me
@jotheman1
@jotheman1 Жыл бұрын
To hit a curl, you just need to hit the ball with the instep of your foot (that's the location on the inside of your foot, right below your big toe). If you're hitting the ball high and want to add a top spin, hit is with your instep for the curl, but make sure to finish with your toes looking to the sky, which will give it the top spin. I hope this helps.
