In this week’s on-location episode, we discuss the only must have filter for landscape photography. When it comes to filters there's many different types and styles to choose from, you have square filters, rectangular and circular filters, graduated and solid ND filters and so on and so forth, but at the end of the day there's really only one that I consider "must have" for my landscape photography. Over the years I've purchased many "essential" filters, well at least what I thought were the "essential" filters, but over time I've realized that there's really only one that I reach into my bag for on a consistent basis.
In this video, I discuss the use of what I consider to be the only must have filter for landscape photography - the circular polarizer! I travel to an incredible waterfall deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in this episode and discuss some tips and best practices along with things to avoid when using this essential filter and how it can and will improve your outdoor and landscape photography. And be sure to stick around till the end of the video as NiSi was kind enough to provide one of these essential filters as the winning prize for the giveaway!
So if you don't currently own any filters for your landscape photography and are trying to determine which filters to start with, I hope this video will provide you with some helpful information that will aid in your decisioning process.

I own so many filters, lol. They’re all roughly the same just different sizes for different lenses. But I have 3 sets of polarized, UV, and ND 2-8, then one set of these weird “macro” filters and then a few warming and the fluorescent filters. Of all of them I use the polarized most. I tend to use the UV to give a little protection to my heavily used lenses and the NDs when shooting in bright locations

Alpine lakes! The deep blues or turquoise coloured lakes add so much contrast to the typical green scene. Plus there’s only so many months of the year that you’re able to shoot them before their frozen over.

There are three must have filters for landscape photography: a circular polarizer, a ND of at least 6 stops, and a ND grad (I use a soft grad) of at least 2 stops. IMO the long exposure waterfall is becoming a cliché in landscape photography, seen one you seen them all.

Mark, twenty-nine years ago I shot those falls on my honeymoon with a 35mm. I got lucky with my shot and that picture still hangs on the wall in our home. About nine months ago I rekindled my interest in landscape photography and came across your videos, which just clicked with me. I have learned a lot, especially about composition. In June I returned to these falls and got to play with some of the techniques I have learned. The lighting was awful, but I still enjoyed hours of experimenting. Part of my reward is seeing this video because I chose some of the same/similar compositions you did. Your videos have definitely had a positive impact on my photography. Thanks.

I looked back through my landscape photos to see what my favourite topic was since I've never thought about it before. It seems like I lean towards large or wide-open spaces but when I looked closer, I realized that all of my favourites inspired a sense of awe and realization of how large, varied and beautiful our world is and how truly small we are. Looking at them , I remember the emotions I felt and the sense of gratitude I felt being able to experience and capture these unique and amazing locations! Thank you for your tutorials and easy to understand information Mark!

Giveaway comments. I shoot waterfalls anytime I can. Live in Ma., and travel to western Ma. (The Berkshires). to shoot the falls. Typically I use a 10 stop ND filter and pretty much similar results as your Nisi polarizer filter. instead of 400 sec exposures, a polarizer filter would reduce my exposure time down to less then a second. Thank you so much very helpful video.

Thank you. I am just starting out with wanting to learn how use the manual mode. I admit that I am a green boxer. I love nature and landscape photography is my favorite. I never really knew anything about filters and why or when to use them. I also enjoyed when you talked about setting up your shots and why you did it. For me it has always a process of finding a spot that people are not in the way. I have always enjoyed water scenes and how professional photographers make it look amazing like a painter would. Thank you for this lesson about taking your time as well as using filters and having a cloth handy.

I’ve only just bought my first dslr beginnerscamera. You are one of the persons who are honest and down to earth. You are not bragging and showing off all of the fantastic locations like some other photographers tend to do. I was almosy discouraged getting into photography at all due to my own perfectionism and knowing i wont be able to create those same fantastic images i love to see. Your clear explainations and breaking down of several topics did inspire me to just get into it and start. Eventually i will be able to create images i’m pleased with, eventhough it will probably never reach National Graphics, and i am truly fine with that! This weekend i shot some lighthouses and seascapes and i honesly think i could have done much worse if it wasn’t for guys like you! So, thank you for all your videos, it really helps me enjoying photography.

Great to see you out in the field again. What is not to like about water falls? Constantly changing. More or less water and sometimes frozen. Different time of the year make the colour shift in nature and so on. So yes when water is involved, that is the time I enjoy the most when photographing.

Hi Mark, I like the way you get out there and take photos in the field and tell us your photography techniques. Very interesting I might add. Most of my photography involve mountains and fields, not the large towering mountains of the Rockies but mountain ranges covered in trees and up to one mile high in elevation. I have polarizing filters for those bright days where it brings out more color and you're right, it does make a difference using filters.

Love your videos, and happy you are liking your Fuji gear! I mainly shoot wildlife at this point, but am trying to more get into landscapes and night photography. I used to shoot a lot of water polo games, and a polarizer was critical to cut down on glare in the pool. A great reference for learning about how polarizers work is the book, Light Science & Magic.

Hi Mark, Thanks for another great tutorial. I particularly liked your pre planning & method of work. It's very easy to get excited about getting to a new location & just wanting to get the camera out & snap away. ( that's the enjoyable part of course ). However there is nothing worse than getting home, reviewing your pictures in detail & then being disappointed. The fact that you have a plan, do a scout around & then consider your composition significantly improves your chances of a great photo. One of your previous tutorials talks about getting to a scene & having the heart rate & adrenalin going as you rush to get that magic capture. I certainly know that felling. I look forward to my next outing & attempt to employing your pre planning strategies. Seascapes & costal vies are my passion. I look forward to your next upload. Cheers.

Hi Mark, being fairly new to both landscape photography and your channel, the concept of using a polarization filter in woodlands is new to me. Great to learn new insights! In the past few weeks heather and bees were a favorite topic to photograph for me. And like you say, next up will be the colorful leaves-season. So I guess, to articulate the season is what I like to photograph in landscape photography.

After following your link and looking over the NISI holder and CPL, it looks like it would be a great addition to my bag. I photograph woods and wetlands as well as prairie landscape scenes primarily. The ability to knock down those bright areas and bring out the color is always helpful. I've been shooting more waterfalls lately and feel that a CPL is a must have. I use NDs but haven't found the magic solution yet. Great examples shown in your video Mark. Thanks.

Mark, Great video. I have enjoyed your videos as you don't ramble on about a lot of things that have nothing to do with the subject. I am retired and 78 yrs old and trying to take a casual hobby to a more professional level. I enjoy landscape and animal photography the most. I try to research in depth all facets of photography and know very little about filters so do not use them yet as I don't quite understand what filter to use when. Love the waterfall video. Have been photographing several in Chattanooga area where I have been spending the summer. Once again, a wonderful, informative clip with well-presented information. I'm not much of a photographer, but I enjoy landscapes, waterfalls, and I guess almost anything. I never neglect small subjects, because they can provide wonderful opportunities. To my delight, whilst in New Zealand a couple of years ago, a chorus of bumble bees were working diligently on what might have been a white allium: we don't have bumble bees in Australia so I took the opportunity. A few years earlier I was "in the right place at the right time" and got the coiled frond of a tree fern before it opened up - a natural fractal. I always try to be alert for subject matter. Years ago, when completing my writing course, the lecturer said there was no such thing a boring subject, only boring writers. Perhaps the same lesson applies in photography.

I found your selection of 1/15th of a second shutter speed to be an interesting choice. Not too fast and not too slow so that you captured some of the detail of the water but also got a little bit of the smoothing effect which I really like. I like to shoot moving water in general but go for longer exposures to get the creamy effect. I just find it beautiful and somewhat calming to look at. Thank you for another very informative video. Hi Mark I enjoy watching your videos on landscape. My favorite subjects are landscape, nature and macro. Your style is very relaxing. You speak slowly, clearly and understandably, unlike some of the other youtubers who are very rushed and difficult to understand. I just added a 7" field monitor to my Sony a7riii and a6500 arsenal. It makes focusing and composing absolutely wonderful. I like your suggestion about the 16-35 which I own and I don't have a 100-400 yet, so I use the Sony 70-200. When I need extra reach, I use the APS camera or APS setting on the full frame. Keep up the good work. Thank you. I look forward to your next videos.

Your videos are always great to watch as you always has something new to tell about or remind us of something important. Since I go hiking a lot I like landscape photography but I wish one day I could go hiking for taking photos. Where I live there are mountains and forests but very few small waterfalls. Woodland photography is a bit challenging and I have rarely succeeded in nailing it as sunlight with a clear sky can make difficult to have the correct exposure.

What a beautiful place, and waterfall, to shoot! Waterfalls are my favorite subject. I love the longer shutter speeds. I bought a book several months ago, about the waterfalls of North Carolina. I am going to have to see if I can find it in my book. Thanks for the video!!

Hi Mark for a year I’m focusing more on woodlands and waterfalls . It’s absolutely different approach then seascape photography which push to find different compositions in that busy forest 🌳 world can be quite difficult.

Thank you for this video! I love waterfall photography and I’m gonna have to get a NISI circular polarizer!

Very informative. I’ve wondered why the top left corner of my sky shots were bluer than the rest. I thought it was a problem with the CPL filter...lol. Should have known it was a user error! So much to learn. I’d love to replace it with a quality filter like yours. I’ll definitely be spending more time on your channel! Thanks so much for sharing and educating us.

Great video and a good reminder to use a polariser. I also love photographing waterfalls, both large and small. I also love mountain scenes, especially Snowdonia and the Lake District here in the UK.

Live out on the prairies so whenever I can I try and take photos of lakes and trees that are dotted throughout our province. Like your teaching style and how you explain your thoughts before taking actual photos. I try to do something similar, but don't always get there.

Great video. I’ve never thought to use a polarizer in the woods like that. Usually I only think to use it with open sky shots. Thanks.

wonderful waterfall, stunning images and video well done and thank you posting! I personally use the Kase system with 3 ND, grad filters and a handful of CPL's. For some unknown reason I just can't let go of the round CPL's, maybe it is the cost and the fact I have switched to Fuji GFX and the lenses are reasonably sized. I am all Landscape all the time after 35 years of making people photography a living. It is so wonderful just to shoot what I see and printing what I consider art. Thanks again!

Been following your for a little while, and yes, my favorite landscape subject is waterfalls. I use a screw in CP not too expensive but it gives me amazing results with my Nikon Z6. I like photographing waterfalls when it is dusk, once I photographed Helmcken Falls at midnight under the stars, scary park with bears :-) I am located in BC, Canada and there is so much wilderness here for photos. I will keep watching you, I pick up tips here and there, and there is always a learning opportunity. Thank You,.

I enjoy shooting old builds/structures. Thanks for the information in your video. I currently don't have have a polarizer filter, just simple clear, protective filters but want to shoot fall color this season with a polarizer.

Really hard to pick my "preferred" landscape photography subject, because I´m always finding something new that caught my eyes, even in well known and familiar places. But I guess the most challenging situation for me is inside the forests, with all those trees and moss and foliage scattered over the ground. Hard to focus in one single thing, or to bring some order out of that apparent chaos, and the wide pallet of greens, yellows, oranges, browns... very challenging. I use a CP most of the time to get rid of the shiny glow of the sky on the leaves, even when it´s overcast. And your videos with hints, suggestions and techniques are helping a lot to get better pictures in those situations. Thank you very much, Mark.

I appreciated you saying you dont always have to crank it to full polarization. Definitely something I should consciously think about next time. What do I like to photograph... typically I enjoy capturing motion, but lately I have been on this kick for capturing what I call the true North Florida... so lots of sand, water, and pine trees.

Hey Mark, really enjoyed this video. You are shooting what I call my “natural blood pressure medicine” 😎👍. My two forms of photography I shoot are Landscape and Wildlife. And for landscape, nothing just relaxes me more than being out in the woodlands, searching for waterfalls. They are my favorite. Add some moss covered rocks, and an overcast day, and that beats Grandma’s Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes, little gravy thrown in there 😎😎.....ok, maybe not that, but close enough, lol. I love long exposure and use my 850, with the 24-70. Finding those spots though is getting tougher and tougher, but it is so rewarding when you do. Thank you for taking us along on the walk to that beautiful set of falls, and setting up for the comp. I always learn something and this take away was the various angles you shot from. So worth it to hit it from different spots. And lastly, agree so much on the one filter you need in LP...definitely the CPL. Thanks again Mark, great vid!
