Actually, in an interview she said that it was a song about all kinds of closed-mindedness and intolerance an individual can experience in life. It was inspired by an encounter with ignorant Christians when she was younger, but its a song that can be interpreted in many ways for many different people. That is the beauty of this song.

LittleChiChi may have a good hypothesis. It does sound a bit Christian-y to me. I am Christian. . .maybe that's why it sounds like it. It just does, ya know? I interpret it as a message about persecution in all forms: religious, racial, sexual, etc. and the hypocrisy behind it (which is also what she said it meant, lol. Yeah, Amy considers herself a Christian. The band formed at a Christian camp where Amy met Ben Moody and they started writing songs together. Though their songs didn't seem to include much relgion, though I believe Undertstanding is more towards religion. "Heaven shine a light down on me" is just a little taste of relgion compared to what other songs have, either none, or a lot. Everybody understand? No confusion? I was planning to clear it all up so we can comment on the song, not relgion.
