⏳️ I will be 57 this year and I have learned that I must acknowledge that I cannot train like I did 20 years ago. Multiple hard days in a row maybe okay for a week or 2 but after months of that it catches up to me and I get hurt. The ego and memory of past achievements is my greatest training motivation but also it gets me in trouble now too.

Yeah, I get it! We're always told not to compare ourselves with others, but comparing ourselves to our past selves is also something to watch out for.

I try SO HARD to not compare my 40 something self to my school girl self... cranking out sub 6 minute miles on the nasty cross country course, after a healthy school lunch of hot dogs. 😂 I'll never reclaim that speed, so I've chosen to go long. New PRs, new (less intense) workouts, new routes... I often have to throw in a treadmill workout at midnight due to my natural schedule. Getting over 30 miles a week is a pipe dream due to my slow speed, unless it's race week. 😂 Forget "run lots" unless it's a day off! Life is stressful enough... i refuse to let running become another source of stress. The day it brings more guilt/ stress than happiness is the day I get a new hobby. ⏳️

You've got a healthy perspective, Kelly! Far more healthy now than banging out 6 minute miles fueled by hotdogs! Don't look back! All the good stuff is in front of us!

⏳Hi Matt...#5 - You can't have it all, all the time...resonates with me. Believe me, I have tried to stay at my peak when I reach a good level of fitness...but it just does not work (for me). Not only does my body run down, but mentally I run down. I enjoyed this video.

I agree with the advice given here. Very sound advice! Especially doing B+ workouts so you can recover properly for the next one. Research says runners can have 2 or at most 3 peak races in a year (speaking of long distance races). All other races and workouts should be inline to support those peaks.
@its_Matt_B_
@its_Matt_B_ 5 ай бұрын
The 2-3 races a year sounds about right, although the high end is probably for people in peak form at a fairly young age (younger than me). I don't think I could race 3 marathons in top form in one year, but two still seems doable.

Great video and good advice. I was pretty discouraged at my pace over last weekend's long run. It wasn't until a day later, while planning my workouts for this week, that it struck me that my last long run was the longest run I've ever completed, so maybe, just maybe, all that talk about building a base actually is paying off. Still want to be faster, though. ⏳

Good info! I have been struggling on runs over 10 miles recently. So anything over 10 miles I went super super easy. I think it's my body suffering from hotter temps but having tendonitis doesn't help. Last week I did 30 miles which is a lot for me and my goal is just to finish be able to finish a marathon. And my eyes on my phone can't tell the difference in the hour glass⏳ 😂 👴
@its_Matt_B_
@its_Matt_B_ 5 ай бұрын
In your defense, those emojis are tiny! I only noticed the difference after I enlarged them for the video! 😁 Hotter temps and tendonitis don't make running any easier! You're good to slow way down on those longer runs! Just remember the old adage: summer miles bring fall smiles!
@craigrwc
@craigrwc 5 ай бұрын
The question I keep coming back to with regards to more mileage is what amount of increasing mileage over time is a byproduct of just being faster at easier efforts? One hour ⏳ of zone 2 running is probably considerably shorter distance for me than an elite runner. The correlation of mileage and marathon times seems like a bit of a chicken and egg question to me.
@its_Matt_B_
@its_Matt_B_ 5 ай бұрын
It's probably not worth thinking too much about it, as it's a fairly subjective self-regulating amount of running. If you kept running more and more you would eventually get to a point where it's too much and you get injured. I look at it as most runners are not running as much as they could, and so can probably handle more volume in order to get faster.

⌛ This article didn't resonate with me. Except for the rule about recovery. I'm not even sure I agree with "run a lot". I think "run purposefully" is a more modern take on efficient training. I was going to say that I can see the sense in peaking for your "championship race". But as I thought about it, it occurred to me that races are not training runs done faster. They are a series of unwelcome surprises. You can control your fitness peak, your fueling/hydration, and to a large extent your effort. But execution in a race also includes responding to those surprises.
@its_Matt_B_
@its_Matt_B_ 5 ай бұрын
I can understand why the article didn''t resonate, as "run a lot" is a little vague and the experience runner knows the danger of simply running a lot. From the perspective of someone trying to get better (perhaps a newer runner), simply running more, rather than focusing on all the minutiae, can be a valid and important path to success.
