As someone who's always wanted to be a voice actor, trying to imitate cartoon characters or other people really helped me a lot in developing my range and there's a TON of crossover in vocal techniques for both voice acting and singing and finding my musical comfort zone kinda just came naturally.

I'm practicing Sleep Token songs too at the moment, particularly Telomeres. A great challenge, helping me find out what my voice can do as I play around with placement to figure out how to nail those vocal lines. Awesome video as usual!

Telomeres is my end boss. I am most confident in Vore and The Summoning. But Telomeres is so hard to sing somehow. Maybe it is also just how much I love the song and not wanting to change it too much with my voice.. but I am not Vessel so I can only sing in my voice. 😅 what a dilemma. I wish you a lot of success with that practice!

You are absoluty right on this. It helps so much to first find how you can sing a high line with as light a voice as you can achieve (my voice teacher calls it sing like a disney fairytale princess) without strain and just being comfortabel, no matter how ridiculous it sounds. Once you internalize that, you'll notice you start hitting those notes in the way you actually want to more often each time.

Start doing opera voice warm ups. Everyone I went to school with for vocal performance had an over 2 octave range when we finished. Jeff Rolka is an amazing voice teacher and he has hundreds of free videos for every voice part on KZbin. A lot of the voice mechanics and technique for harsh vocals tie in with Classical and Opera, especially diaphragm breathing and breath focus.

I figured this out on my own and it's what has helped me grow more than anything. I connected my chest voice by developing my head voice and working down. So, worked from the top down. For lower notes I kinda groan into it, the way vessel does sometimes. Helps me connect the different tones. But with head voice, it's soft then I add compression and get a clear tone. And I don't try to mimmick other singer, only their techniques.

Thank you, Chris! This video actually motivated me to try finding my mixed voice again. I gave up a few months ago, because I couldn't get rid of the gap between my chest and head voice - even after lots of practice and different methods. It's obviously still like that rn and I have a long way to go, but your video reminded me, that there are many ways to approach singing and discovering/developing my voice. What helped me the most from your advice here is the way of approaching high notes with the same mindset as when using head voice... 🙏

You released this video this morning right as I was in the middle of learning, listening to, and working out "Chalk Outlines" by Ren and Chinchilla. Such a beautiful song. The thing Im trying to focus on more than anything is the storytelling, the emotion. Now just to find the right key that I think gives the best expression =) Thank you again for all your guidance. Between you and Charismatic Voice I have been more inspired to improve my "voice" - and by that really, I mean my expression. It's funny - I never had much issue and never spent much time thinking about things like pitch when i was first getting into music and playing guitar and writing songs, 20 years ago. But life etc. etc. and I spent almost 6 years not playing or making any music at all. 2 years ago, I changed that and started getting back into it. But my largest roadblock has been reconnecting with the emotion and expression of the music again. It's like I forgot how to. Anyway, all that long rant just to say that, you all are helping me to find that connection again every day!

One thing that helps me hit powerful high notes is coming down from head voice. For example: in Ghost’s Little Sunshine, the line “when you’re all alone,” I have to jump into the lower pitch of my head voice and then sort of finesse it into the “just call me” and it just has that level of power that I haven’t been able to feel with my own voice before.

Chris, you know I hold you in high regard, but I have to say I personally developed my range with scales as well as crazy free noises etc. Maybe I'm a masochist, (lol) but I pulled up chest for many years inspired by the old school vocalists. I've had nose bleeds, had episodes of dizziness, but at an age I won't divulge, I can still hit full, powerful chesty notes. The key to my success is I forced myself up and down the scales and learned how to really exert up and down. Very much like a bodybuilder, I used progressive resistance. I practiced messa di voce like an animal. I became very strong in managing exhalation and really leaning in on my folds till they could withstand increasing levels of air pressure. I hardly ever lose my voice, because no air escapes when you seriously sing high and powerful.
@chrisliepe

You've done a great job of using scales etc... without having it be a pissing context with yourself haha... I can't seem to do it. It turns into competition unless I randomly release into higher pitches. I'm glad though that it works well for you!

I started singing along to Bryan Garris from Knocked Loose (high fry notes) and it instantly helped increase my range and power. I used to try singing along to Skid Row but I'd be in head voice then gradually go up to the higher notes then I'd hit a wall. With Knocked Loose Bryan is straight away hitting around F5 and when I directly go for that note I feel like I'm in a register even higher than head voice, like flagolet 'cos it feels easy and strong. Knocked Loose songs give me a reference for the right register to start with.

This was super interesting! I'm not seeking to become a professional singer, but I'm curious about one thing as someone who has always found voice acting (and doing "voices" in general) especially fascinating: at what point do you see a crossover between voice actors and singers in your line of work? I remember vividly, hearing about how the VA who did the voice for Zim in Invader Zim nearly destroyed his voice because of that role, and it makes me wonder if/when voice actors might benefit from a singing-oriented vocal coach? Also, we've got juggernauts like Ronnie Radke running around, doing old-school horror vampire voices for funsies in the middle of operatic ballads, and that's just rad. I wish more songs had voice acting... Anyway, I guess this means head voice is my jam. I love doing random voices, and it does indeed help you find comfortable ways to reach greater highs! (And even if I end up sounding like a cartoon character, at least it adds a lot of fun goofery when singing along with Vessel in the car. XD)

I’ve been doing for years all the things you mentioned in first 2-3 minutes. You always say that singing scales, is not what you recommend. That may be good advice for exploration and studying your voice. I think that ’programming’ scales in to muscle memory, is essential for learn to use the larynx-instrument properly. What u gonna sing on top of the guitar but scales and intervals. I do agree, that they do not necessarily help you find your mixed voice, without type of throat exploration that you represent. I combine your exercises with Jacobs Vocal Academy scales and runs, and results are quite encouraging.

Hi, Chris. Been watching you for a couple of years, and you've definitely been helpful. I lost half an octave in my range last April due to Covid, and then immediately afterward laryngitis. It's taken me the better of a year to regain what I lost, and even then it's inconsistent. Lowest note is C2, highest is D#5 on a really good day. But like I said, it's inconsistent. And I find I have much less endurance now, too. Do you have any tips for a dude in my situation that aspires to cover some Audioslave and other top-notch singers, but have been messed over by Covid?

Hey Chris! I found this video very reassuring that what I've been working on actually might be a good idea! My routine is about 25 min, 5-6 days a week, pretty straightforward arpeggios, scales, sirens, etc, but with a big focus on "ironing out" that scary space (passagio) in-between chest and head voice :|. With that said, give it to me straight man... as a soon-to-be 43 yr old Baritone who sometimes even still struggles with an F4, how much can I really grow my head voice, in hopes that, it will help me with my "ironing"? (on a normal day I can comfortable reach a G5, and a good day barely squeak out a C6) Thanks for any advice! Your channel is awesome!

Nice video Chris! Do you know the Mooshroohead? They have a really cool sound and an atmosphere reminiscent of Slipknot. It would be interesting to talk about songs like Simple Survival, Sun Doesn't Rise and Solitare Unraveling (or who knows about the cover they did of Seal, Crazy).
