Pints, maybe you could help me out here. So many people have told me that if I don't do X, Y, or Z, then I'm going to hell. If I can't speak in tongues, if I am Catholic (which I am), if I'm not Catholic, if I don't know the exact moment in time I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, if I didn't know for certain that I was saved... it's really made mincemeat of my spirit. The most devastating thing I fear the most is exactly what Fr Casey said, that when I cry Lord Lord, he may tell me that he doesn't know me. How do I know when giving enough is enough? It's never enough. Ever. And we wonder why scrupulosity is such a problem. 😔 It's not just unnerving, it's making me question whether I have any worth as a Christian outside of my ability to write a check.

@@enshala6401 You know when you really try and ask for forgiveness when you know you committed a sin. Jesus scolded hypocrites, not people who were trying. If you choose to follow Him and you really want to do things right, He gives you all the rest. You don't need to think in hell anymore, you're "saved", as Protestants say. Jesus died because of that, after all: not to condemn, but to save us. To *save* us, not to give us the opportunity to try and save ourselves. If you want to give Him only the minimum, then it will never be enough, and you'll be scared all your life. Treat Him like the Friend and the Doctor: no one calculates how much is OK to give a friend, people just love and ask for forgiveness when needed. And trust each other. With Him is the same. That's the meaning of "Love and do whatever you want" of saint Augustine. As saint John Cassian said: "Some people obey God out of fear, those are slaves; others obey Him for the prize, those are merchans; others follow Him out of love, those are his children". Be a child a God! "For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” (Rom 8,15)

Please allow me to share this story. A homeless man sitting outside of a Tim Hortons coffee shop asking for spare change. No body want to give him any thing at the time. I then saw a stranger took him inside the coffee shop and offered him lunch. The man took up the stranger's offer. The stranger sat and ate with the homeless man, that man appeared to be very appreciative of the stranger's offer and company. I felt ashamed and humble at the moment.

My grandfather used to do that all the time (and indeed at Timmy's)! When a beggar in front asked him for change, he instead invited him in to have a meal and a chat. And not that sort of moralizing 'fix your life and quit drugs' kind of chat. Just a normal conversation between equal human beings. Now, my grandfather was only but a man and a sinner, he was not perfect, he drank and he cheated. But he knew he was faillible, and he knew the person outside Timmy's was just like him, without the luck of the draw. If there is a God, I hope he judges my grandfather not by his mistakes, but by his compassion.

@@rafaelpastrano-espinoza8924 Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate them. The event that led me to not believe in God is a bit personal, but after that, as I grew up, I learned about several religions and beliefs as I'm thoroughly interested in antropology and history. Buddhism, Hinduism, Muslim, even from pre-Columbian societies like Aztecs, Incas and Mapuche (as I'm from Chile, South America). And in all of them I found rich, history, traditions, deep rooted beliefs and spiritual guides through life in general. All of them offering a different view on life. This led me to think that I couldn't genuinely believe that the Christian/Chatolic God is the one true God among all of those systems of beliefs and cultures even If I wanted to. And even then, I'm a really skeptical individual so something as faith doesn't come easy for me. I believe (if you can call it that way) that the only thing certain about our life is the life that we have now, and as such, it is important to use it for good, to be kind, and to work for a better world for future generations so them can live their life to their full extent and keep helping others, creating a endless cycle of love and compassion that can pass through generations to come.

I struggle to understand this concept as a former protestant. How is it that my salvation comes about as a free gift from God, which I do not deserve nor could I ever earn, but yet I have to do so much good and live so radically for this salvation. The only solution I draw is that God offers me this gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, calling me into the life of his love which I absolutely do not deserve. However, it is this life and grace that calls me to be fully receptive to God's love, so that I might be fully alive. This life that I have received calls me to organize my entire life in love because the essence of God's life is love and in order for me to open my heart fully to his life I must become receptive to it by becoming love.

Think about it this way. God offers his grace completely freely but it must be accepted. In the same way if someone were to give you a birthday present you have the option of accepting and opening it, so to do we have the ability to either choose or not choose to accept that grace. In the case of heaven, our acceptance of grace is through the actions Jesus enumerated and uniting ourselves to him. The grace is always out there, you have to choose to accept via certain conditions. Everything we do on Earth is a part of our orientation into either a Heavenly or Hellish creature.

Sometimes I think about this too but I am reminded of the parable of the King who forgave a huge debt from his servant (salvation) but resends that debt when the servant does not follow the King’s example in forgiving another servant’s smaller debt to him. The larger debtor had salvation but did not follow his Master’s mercy and generosity on a much smaller scale

God's love for us is unconditional, but true love is also exigent. Any good parent can relate to this while trying to raise their children: no good behavior can buy your parents love, and they'll love their child even if he ends up being a criminal. But they're gonna tell him and even scold him when he's any less than he should.

@The Catholic Teen - I also like the gift analogy like Jake Galgano said. Say someone were to give you a free ticket to Disney World (or some other place). But you didn't earn that ticket, right? They did it out of love and don't expect anything back from you. However, you still have to make the journey to Disney World. It's up to you to get there to use the ticket.

Thank you for this! I needed to hear it. It's about doing the more difficult and uncomfortable obligations of Christianity. Giving a few bucks or donating food/clothes is important, but it's also easy. This is about putting yourself out there and really listening to the stories of others and becoming empathetic. While the idea of this makes me a bit nervous, I'm going to try and put myself out there in the community a bit more. I'm sure it makes a huge difference to those in need when they can feel heard and cared for.

From someone who grew up poor in a poor village, I can say you seem to to have little understanding of the poor. Generally, we are as proud and corrupt as the rich. The key is to understand Truth; that we all are poor in that we rely on God for everything. And that we deserve nothing. This brings a certain freedom which fosters generosity to all, and an indomitable joy.

I am a Californian, so the poor are indeed all around. rowing up protestant, I was raised with this attitude that feared good works, as that might mean the dreaded "works-based salvation", so no one around me was ever particularly concerned with the poor. They were often seen as disgusting and filthy, living in ghettos or even homeless. This is an ugly prejudice, reinforced by the high crime in these areas. The lawlessness makes many otherwise good people back off from wanting to get involved, as long as they could live comfortably in their gated communities. The rampant drug use, alcoholism, gang violence, and domestic abuses many away. I have always wanted to do more to help, but never saw a way. Now, I'm thinking about the many community outreach programs and church-affiliated food and ministry drives around me, and wonder why I have not taken more action. Another problem with many protestant denominations is that their members are more concerned with spiritual conversion than ministry to their physical needs. They talk to someone until they decide they want to get saved, then it's almost as if they dust off their shoulders and move on to the next one. Not every church is like this, mind you, but there seems toi definitely be more of a concern with a salvation experience than making sure they have food or shelter. It is sad, and one of the reasons I've been drifting away from the baptist theology I grew up with. The main thing that has been difficult for me to give up is eternal security, as I was always taught to rest in the knowledge that, no matter what, I was under the blood of Christ, and so nothing more was required of me. Now I've been wondering if I've done enough that, were I to die today, I would be counted a follower of God. This is why confession was instituted, I suppose.

"I was hungry and you gave me food, thirsty and you gave me drink," etc. are NOT only about PHYSICAL or MATERIAL charity. They are ALSO about those who hunger and thirst for SPIRITUAL food and guidance. Poverty isn't just a lack of material goods and bodily needs, although that is certainly a real form of poverty too. Negligent catechesis by priests and bishops who have failed to transmit the Faith adequately have also created a lot of "poor" Catholics -- at least one if not two entire generations of Catholics simply don't know the Faith well. As a result, they don't practice it well. And that, too, is a real form of poverty -- a form of poverty that kills the soul, which is much worse than that which kills the body. When priests, bishops, and yes, even we laypeople fail to teach and spread the Faith properly, we too are guilty of keeping people impoverished. Spiritually, doctrinally, and morally impoverished -- which are just as real and just as harmful as material poverty. More so, in fact. So, let's not oversimplify and boil Matthew 25 down to merely being social-justice do-gooders. Again, addressing material poverty and helping the materially poor are of course important -- vital, in fact, to our lives as Christians. But poverty comes in many forms that go WELL beyond just the material. Let's not neglect it.

You give away your disdain for Fr. Casey’s overall message when you used the phrase “social-justice do-gooders.” I don’t disagree that Matthew 25 may well have a broader meaning and application, but that does not negate it’s plain language meaning. To poo poo social justice as a primary and over-arching responsibility of faithful Catholics is to literally disregard Christ’s preference for the materially poor.

Hi Father, this is a good point, but how exactly do we live this out? Some of us struggle deeply with social interaction of any kind, much less socialising with strangers, and the poor, being human beings like the rest of us, sometimes can be hostile and hard to work with. Of course, that's no excuse to not care about the children of God, but still, my point is that not every way of serving the poor is equally suited to each type of person, and many people only know a handful of ways to help. Maybe a video on the ways that Christians can actually help the poor in practice is called for?

His character is one who loves the poor. Paul is 100% correct in salvation by faith alone and Jesus taught that as well but too many evangelicals ONLY read Paul, and to truly know Jesus you need to also read the Gospel accounts.

If it were not essential to faith and our salvation it would be a paragraph - not chapters. What about the 2 Commandments Christ gave? Love God with your whole self and treat your neighbor as yourself. What about the people who are great at the second one but not the first - they are atheists? As a former Protestant, I can confirm your observation is True. A Protestant will point out “Saved by Grace through Faith, not of Works” a million times. Then, the Protestant will say that they don’t have a license to sin. We agree. But, somehow, not having a license to sin doesn’t mean that your works matter in regard to salvation. It’s by Faith Alone. Your Faith is to be pregnant with works, if not, your Faith isn’t real. We agree, you can tell by a person’s works where their Faith is at. But, a Protestant will disagree. A Protestant refuses to say that your works have anything to do with your salvation Then say that works have something to do with their salvation. They can’t explain how your saved by Faith Alone, but also you don’t have a license to sin. They think it’s because they’re bad orators. They think it takes a Revelation from God to get it. They don’t even entertain the thought that it’s bad Theology. I know, I was a lifelong Protestant, robbed of the riches of the Church. Common sense eventually overcomes irrational conclusions, if you keep going after Jesus Christ. You’re saved by Faith (Catholic Catechism 1987), and your Works need to reflect that Faith ((Catholic Catechism 1988). It really can be explained that simply. but declared first to those at Damascus, then at Jerusalem and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and perform deeds worthy of their repentance. I’m a Protestant Christian. Yes, I’m saved by Grace through faith in Christ. But I believe that a TRUE Christian will automatically want to do good works including helping the poor, etc. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says we become a new creature. So you see, you can’t lump all Protestant Christians together. I never do that to my Catholic friends. In fact, my husband was Catholic and we had many a discussions about our faith in Christ. @@ellenhall2090 Don't you think you can reject God's grace everytime He wants you to make a good deed? I think this is vital for reconciling the two visions. Catholic theology puts an emphasis on free will and coherence, so the explanations where works seem to be "automatic" make us distrust. On daily life, you get to say yes and no to God many times (although not any sin separates you from your justification on Christ, of course). However, I see it as a theological problem only. I have no doubt a sincere Protestant who loves Jesus is going to try and obey Him everyday regardless of what part works play on getting to Heaven.

The gospel is the GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM! Repent and believe the gospel! Follow Jesus’ teachings! Jesus is going to return and set up the kingdom of God ON THE EARTH! God’s government ON THE EARTH! The Messiah will resurrect his people! The destiny of the Messiah and his people is to be ON THE EARTH! The renewed restored earth! God also dwelling with them! Rev 21 Jesus said the Father is the only true God! John 17 3 And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

Fantastic. What a beautiful showing of interreligious dialogue and fraternity among peoples. It is the perfect symbol of peace that our world needs these days and yet another example of how Pope Francis is leading the charge in reconciling a broken world.

@@BreakingInTheHabit but Jesus said he is the way the truth and the life Muslims only believe Jesus is a prophet and he will come back and marry.God is not a God of confusion his words will stay true. Galatians 1:8 tells us to beware of an other gospel preached by man or angels and as we know Muslims claim Gabriel gave Muhammhid another revulation. I know this might bring peace to humans but how will they end up following the one and true God if their is deception Commandments are love God first then your neighbor

@@jesuscameforrelationshipno4165 muslems will never accept Lord Jesus as God. Their teachings are completely agsinst our teachings. And Paul in his letters to Roman's states that Jesus is the only and only way to heaven.. not by works so we don't boast but by faith. Then works come as fruits of our faith... we catholics are making peace but compromising Jesus...

The only way to heaven is believing that jesus christ died on the cross for our sins, no amount of sacraments or good works will get anyone to heaven, God despises when people pray to saints or say a prememorized prayer, catholics need to read whatever Bible they have and see for themselves that God does not like the majority of what catholics do.

@@jamesparson depends on what you think is going to happen to your donation, it's supposed to fund the preacher and makes sure he's paid for, it is NOT a way to get dead family to heaven like catholics used to teach
