Fun Fact! Koek (pronounced like kook, as in a crazy person) is actually a range of things from certain types cakes to biscuits. To specify a cookie it is as shown a koekJE. The -je (or sometimes -tje) in Dutch signifies that something is small, a function not found in English. In English we would say "A little cannon/a small cannon" in Dutch it is "een kanonnetje". Not to be confused with the word "je", which is an informal way to say "you". There is unfortunately no way to explain how to pronounce "je" in English, a the "j" sound is weird in English. A common problem. Just like with R, G or the combined vowels IJ or EI (which are pronounced the same). There is simply no English equivalent in pronunciation. Even though Dutch and English are really closely related.

English however is a mismash of lot's of different languages, so if you've spoken English your whole life Dutch sounds weird, but if you haven't English is weirder. A Germanic language which helps more with learning French then German is really rather weird I'd say. PS.: I've also heard that Dutch is the closest language to Frankish, which would make sense since the Franks lived in the southern Netherlands originally. And if that's the case that's pretty neat.

For the second comic, The Dutch, different from the British, is more heavily focused on making profits from their colony. Sure, there were some locals Being taught at some school at that time, mostly royalty or governors children. They're getting educated about stuff like simple math, literacy, and of course Dutch. However, this is all just for the sake of producing some amount of capable human resources for work in fields such as accounting, administration, and so on. While the rest of the populus, the one needed for their hard labor, left with their own local language. This was done because they calculated that letting local people speak their own language was much easier than having to educate thousands of people to speak a new language.

The story of New Netherland becoming English wasn't as simple as England just taking it, though. I mean they did... initially. But then we took Guyana (incl. Suriname) from them, which was a much more profitable colony at the time. We also ended the war by destroying the English fleet at its home base in Chatham. We then opted to stay with the new status quo, despite England begging us to take back New Netherland in exchange for Guyana. Then some years later, England, France and some German states attacked us during the disaster year. After some initial panic and a controversial dinner with president as an ingredient, we managed to defeat the English again. We then controlled both New Netherland (which now also included Maine) as well as Guyana. We then gave New Netherland back to the English because we feld kinda bad for them, or according to history books to prevent a future war with England. Ironically we took the initiative for the next war when we invaded the British realms in 1688, which was the last time we more or less (indirectly) controlled America. This was not the end of New Netherland however. The Dutch influence on America goes way beyond some words. During the American Revolution the United States used the Act of Abjuration as a large inspiration for their Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation gave them a political system similar to that of the United Provinces of the Netherlands. The Dutch at the time liked the Americans and helped them get independent from the British, ending the British-Dutch alliance that had been there since 1688, but becoming the USA's oldest ally. And that's how the story ends. With the Netherlands helping New Netherland, now expanded with Dixie, New England and some lands to the west and under the new name "United States of America", become free from British rule.
