The open source road of independently developed distributed database - Tommy Cheung

We will check out and have a journey on the story of OceanBase, an enterprise grade open-source distributed database, starting with how the decision went from internal use case for Alibaba, Ant Group, from commercialization across to open source platform to contribute to the open source community and collaboration with Open Source developers globally.

Tommy is leading OceanBase’s Solution Architecture team, responsible for driving OceanBase’s Digital Native and Enterprise usage across ASEAN, Hong Kong and beyond. Working together with the OceanBase’s open source team, evangelize OceanBase community edition in the open source community.
OceanBase is an independently developed distributed database that is gaining adoption globally. Originally developed to handle the massive volume of transactions occurring during promotions such as double 11 at Alibaba’s Taobao. Over the last ten years it has been rapidly adopted across industries such as Banking, Insurance, Telco, e-commence, logistics and powering Alipay’s billions of transactions with 1.3 billion users across the globe.
Prior to joining OceanBase, Tommy worked in various regional and country roles with AWS, Oracle & BlackLine in APAC and EMEA, covering the full spectrum of cloud such as IaaS, PaaS and SaaS services with focus on driving business value with technology solutions and scaling applications meeting modern usage patterns that can reach millions of users.
