I used to suffer with anxiety and dropped out of college and thought I would have no hope of getting a degree without any A levels, the open university has given me that opportunity and I have so much control over my studies it's perfect! OU is definitely an option - your costs will be a lot lower than they would be at a "brick" university, as it's only part-time and can be made to fit around other commitments (work, kids, ect). You could even do an Open degree (hint, hint, hint...) where you can "mix and match" modules from different faculties to suit your needs.

After 20 years in the same job I decided to study for a degree to help my future career prospects. I started in October 2018, studied full time whilst working part time, and submitted my last assignments in June 2021. I’ve just been awarded a 2.1 BA (Honours) in Business Management (Leadership Practice). I would highly recommend the Open University, the study materials online and in print are really good, as are the online tutorials. The tutors were really helpful and were always available for guidance either on the phone or online. I’m so pleased I decided to do it. Looking forward to getting back to full time work, onward and upward…

It''s now a long time hence, since you posted this video. As a current student (one of the old aged ones) I think you've done a good job of explaining how OU works. It still has the same system, with perhaps a more updated 'Student home page'.. I'm working on an Open degree, mainly because I will not be going back to work. But, you explained really well how flexible OU is, in terms of changing the courses and type of degree should a student want to.

Nice video! I have a 1st class honours BSc from the OU, I started in Bristol in 1989 because I was bored with TV, Finished from Denver Colorado in 1998 because my job moved, real distance learning! Took off the year I moved and was already back peddling waiting for the BSc to be introduced so ended up doing a full 480 credit degree alongside a full time job as a Software Developer. I paid for my first course out of my own pocket but changed jobs about 3/4 of the way through that first year, the final interview was about an hour of which I'd estimate 15-20 minutes was spent talking about the OU & why I was taking classes, can't say for sure but suspect it was a significant factor in getting the job offer. With the benefit of an enlightened employer my degree cost about £1250 most of that because the US reimbursement was only 75% vs 100% for a distinction level pass in the UK. That said most of my experience pre-dates online study, although I have 13 MOOCs, including the Stanford AI Class, to my credit since. As to recognition, don't know what the score is today, but based on interviews over the years I'd say the biggest perceived job benefit is what the study effort says about the individual (I think it well worth up-selling at an Interview). In my day fitting anywhere from 300-600 hours of study over roughly an 8 month period alongside a full time job made potential employers sit up and take notice. over roughly a 45 year career I've had 12 interviews and 11 Job offers, 7 of those ,not including the lack of an offer form the BBC, after starting with the OU. Career wise your milage may vary but I've found an OU Degree a plus. With the winds of retirement whistling through these here old bones it might be fun to do a second degree but being 'overseas' even if possible to study from the US these days the associated cost would likely be prohibitive.

Just an advice for those who of you who're considering to enroll in OU degree, just make sure whether your degree is recognised in your country or not. But for those who had completed their degree in a country where it's not recognised, there are only one way to overcome this issue, which is relocate to other countries where your degree is recognised. I'm a Malaysian and OU degree is not recognised in my own country, so I made the decision to work abroad in a foreign country.

@@serveywow Hi Monty :) so basically at brick uni I was doing BioMedical Science. I have completed my 90 credits with the OU last June and had 240 credits achieved. In October 2020 I started my final year with OU. At the time I applied I had to choose the degree ‘BSc Hons Natural Science (Biology)’ tbh I wasn’t happy with that title for me personally as it’s not specific to the career I’ll be starting and what I want to progress in. Luckily for me the OU last year have new titles and new degrees so I switched to the new degree, it took 3-6 months transferring my 240 credits and the OU had to make sure everything fits within the degree I wanted to do. In Feb 2021 they agreed and my new degree title is ‘BSc Hons Biology’ :) I did 120 credits this year, my exams are in June 2021 and my project will be due on August 31st. I hopefully will be graduating at the end of 2021. Let me know if you want any info etc or anything:)

Just to add, that some modules do require that you buy additional books to the text books provided. English Lit. modules have a long list of set books for eg and History modules usually have at least one additional text book to purchase. These are always listed in the module descriptions though so that you can see what you would need to buy and there's nothing wrong with buying second-hand!

I did a Masters in Manufacturing Technology, MBA and Finance with the OU. I found it to be outstanding quality. I also studied at The University of Oxford for a post grad qualification afterwards, a different brilliant experience but I didn't feel OU study a was lesser educator because of it. Here's the funny thing all Universities now do some or more distance learning so the boundaries are breaking in differences. Plus diayance learning works better for people who learn better at their own pace. OU also has high independent quality accreditations eg MBA. So recommend it

I'm finishing a BA (Hons) in business management, it took me 4 years to complete and cost roughly £9,000. In my opinion, if at all possible you should go through a brick-and-mortar learning provider. The OU mark a lot harsher than traditional universities but do not provide the same level of tuition. The tutors are inattentive and underpaid and therefore strike regularly. The degrees are not accredited the same i.e. you do not receive a 2:1 or First in your relevant subject, rather a 'grade 2 pass' etc. This has confused some people when graduating and I assume it may also raise some eyebrows during a job interview. All in all, I wouldn't have studied through the OU if it wasn't my only option. In short PROs - low academic barriers to entry, slightly cheaper than traditional universities, the flexibility of learning CONS - Lower quality tuition, lack of social learning, harder to receive decent grading, differences in final grading terminology, and complete lack of transparency of how assignments are marked and incoherent guidance to students. In summary, if it's your only option go for it. If you have any way of attending a traditional uni then I would strongly advise it! It's slightly more expensive, but it's well worth it to get proper tuition and to gain from the social aspect of learning.
@megsy99
@megsy99 3 жыл бұрын
It's slightly confusing but not that difficult to convert. Distinction = 1st = First class honours Grade 2 = 2:1 = Upper Second Class Grade 3 = 2:2 = Lower second class Grade 4 = 3rd = Third class I've only seen these grades used for module results. Usually the actual OU degree certificates state the same formal classification as a traditional uni

Thank you for the video, really helpful and informative. Hope the rest of your pregnancy went well. I'm Currently working 30hrs a week, have 2 children under 2 and I'm wanting to study Business Management too... is it a good course and do-able with the time constraints of parenthood?

The video deserves a thumbs-up for its coherence and info provisioning. Thank you so much. However, as an international student, I am wondering if the OU is a bit out of its league going by tuition fee. I see some renowned universities offering full-time degrees barely eclipsing the OU fee bracket. While I understand that OU offers flexibility in terms of pursing a degree under limitations - ex: age, edu. background, personal situations etc.- I ain't sure if their tuition fee standards as of now is helping. For me, clearly not. Anyone with similar thoughts?

The OUs tuition fees are cheaper than most UK "brick" universities, I'm intrigued are any of the renowned universities you have seen with cheaper fees based in the UK? I'd be interested to check them out. 😊 I can't comment in the price comparison between the UK and other international universities unfortunately, our government has a lot of control over fees rather than the individual universities.

Hi Heather! After watching two of your very informative videos about the OU, I noticed that you are or maybe now were... studying a Business Management (Honours) degree. I myself would potentially be interested in enrolling into this course and maybe specializing in Marketing in 2020 or 2021. Unfortunately there seems to be a lack of information online from students that are on this course or have already completed it. So as it seems that it's already been a couple of years since you originally posted your videos. How in regards to the degree are you getting on now? Would you still recommend this particular degree with the OU? There are many recent online negative reviews about the OU mainly complaining about the lack of student support and apparently a somewhat unfair grading system. In your personal experience in regards to this course would you agree with these complaints? Also if by any chance you have already completed this course, how much would you say that the degree has positively affected you employability? Many thanks for any answers to these questions. And if I may finally add, I think myself and potentially many others would be very thankful if you were to post a new informative "update" video, telling us about how now you would view the course, pros and cons and any personal recommendations in regards to this particular course now that you must have acquired much more knowledge about the course in question. Many thanks again. Vince

This is my first baby, so I’m considering weather or not I’ll be able to manage the degree and working part time with a newborn. 😊 thank-you.

Hi, I'm from Brazil, and I'd like to study de Natural Science Degree with focus in Biology, but my question is if the OU is free. I am a bit preemptive because I thought the university was free, and I saw ue there are fees that are paid in £. I am unemployed and my country is still recovering from an economic crisis.
@HeatherDarroch
@HeatherDarroch 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alef, there are fees for UK students but it may differ for your country, you would be best to enquire with the open university student support team, there may be further support you could be entitled to with fees or it may work differently 😊 sorry I can't answer your question entirely!

Hi! Thank you very much for this video! I am thinking to start OU this autumn , however i have few doubts : first- how they taking exams , how to know what about they will be and etc ? Second - English is my second language , I already finish few NVQ's here but still worrying about my english ... probably my questions sounds silly, just want to know more about how people study there and prepare for exams and finish them subject ?
@HeatherDarroch
@HeatherDarroch 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura, your modules will lead up to your exams over time and build a layer of knowledge so you will be prepared for them, most of the time past papers are also available as well as practice questions so you will know what to expect. Many people on my module are in the same situation as you and English is their second language, I think it will all depend on how competent you are with the language as the OU involves a lot of independent study as it is predominantly distance learning. If you have already completed some NVQs in English then you should have a high enough standard of English for it not to be a problem but there is a page you can visit that talks more about studying with English as a second language which you may find helpful www.open.ac.uk/courses/do-it/english-skills 😊

Extremely helpful! Thank you so much for making these videos! I have another question though sorry :'D Do they require like some proof that you will be able to pay it? My current work situation is complicated and I don't plan on taking on any loans (because I would most likely not be eligible anyway)
@HeatherDarroch
@HeatherDarroch 7 жыл бұрын
Teodora Djakovic no problem! If you are paying yourself I believe each module you enrol on needs to be paid up front, so you do not need to pay for the whole degree in one go. In which case proof of income won't be necessary but you would need to have funds available before starting each module. There may be other payment options though, the fees and funding page I've linked in the description will give way more detail and there should be contact details for OU advisors on the site if needed 😊

No you can't because the examinations are held to same standard as other universities in England (I actually mean England not the UK) and you wouldn't survive 3.5 hours computer science exams without a good command of English. Exams in England are mainly written exams not multiple choice exams.
