The Original 3000 Year Old Melody of the Psalm 19 - Revealed?

Following the tragic destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, the entire musical legacy of the Temple, both vocal and instrumental, seemed to be forever lost. However, the Masoretic scribes preserved (along with the biblical consonantal text itself) an ancient "reading tradition" dating back (according to themselves) to the Second Temple Era; and beginning about 1,200 years ago, they painstakingly copied that tradition out in exacting detail. The Masoretic Text is still the oldest complete copy of the Hebrew Bible that we have.
Part of the "reading tradition" the Masoretes preserved was a series of "accents" ("Te Amim"), which occur throughout the entire Tanakh (Torah, Nevi'im and Ketuvim) in two systems. The Masoretes did not understand the meaning or the monumental significance of these accents, and for centuries, there have been countless theories as to what their original meaning was.
Most theories have started from the assumption that they were to emphasize precise points of grammar in the text. Leaving aside all these debates, Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura concentrated solely on finding a musical meaning of these "accents".
Through countless experiments and a laborious process of irrefutable verification (using the Hebrew verbal phrase structure itself as her "Rosetta Stone"), she finally realized that all these symbols represent musical tones: the 7 degrees of a heptatonic scale, or else ornaments of one to three notes! The accents, were, in fact transcriptions of hand gestures - which formed the ancient musical notation system of cheironomy, whereby a specific hand gesture represented a specific change in the pitch of a melody.
This presentation features Haik-Vantoura's original 1976 recording on volume 2 of her album, "La Musique De La Bible Revelee", of her reconstruction of what could well be the original 3000 year old biblical music, once sang to Psalm 19:

The entire concept of the Church Choir came out of the Temple where Psalms were chanted back and forth. Also, the notation and style of Gregorian chants in certain modes that are closer to what is identified as minor keys, are straight from the ancient Synagogue. Very early Christianity was Jewish and so the hymns and style of worship used were the same as any other Synagogue, which came from the Temple.

No, actual ancient Hebrew psalms sound more like Mesopotamian music, the original melodies were destroyed in 70 AD along with the Temple of Jerusalem. Melodic motifs in Gregorian chant aren't really derived from ancient music. Haik-Vantoura's "transcriptions" of biblical psalms are a well constructed hoax. I read a great article by a Jewish musicologist who explains how the Cantellation marks that she supposedly interpreted simply DO NOT correspond with individual notes, and it's crazy to suggest that they do.

Well the media on how we preach god has to change and has to be up to date. The core message is there but how it’s presented needs to change with each culture or generation. Bible translations is a good example. You wouldn’t read the kjv translation to a high schooler because he won’t know what your talking about. You would probably need to read a esv,nlt or niv. Same with music. God should be presented multiple ways but with the same clear core message.

I grew up reading NIV but, when I got saved I realized that some of the text was changed in that bible. So I used the KJV bc it’s not tampered with. Now I’ll admit it was hard understanding it at first. But now a year later it speaks way more in one verse then the NIV in one chapter. If that makes sense. I’m not saying your take was wrong. @@matthews1338 - according to Suzanne Haik Vantoura, to find the correct musical mode to which the steps of notes indicated by the Te Amim refer to, only the correct mode will give precisely the meaning and emphasis to the original text to which the music was originally created to accompany. In other words, an incredibly laborious process of test and elimination, until both melody and the corresponding emphasis/meaning it gives to the original Hebrew text finally best correspond - although beyond scientific certainty that this music was the original music to which the text of the entire Hebrew Bible was originally sang, including the original tunes of the Psalms of David, for me, the music she revealed, speaks for itself.

We call something by a name, indeed we seek to quantify, to understand. In truth, music, sound the waves that are its structure are all Gods. There is no one type of music, rather different interpretations. All things, whether by intent or ignorance, will give Glory to God. How can they not? I have never listened to this, it is beautiful. It made me think of God, of Christ, The Holy Spirit. Another may think of a calm river or a sunset, and yet those too are part of God, His expressions, His power, His love. It was just a pity that back in 1976 when this was recorded, 'historically informed performance' was in its infancy - the use of modern orchestral trumpets and awful operatic vibrato style vocals sadly does distract from the elegant ancient purity of these melodies. If Susannah Haik Vantoura was correct in her remarkable musical discovery, (if only we could verify beyond doubt, that the 'Te Amim' accents were indeed, Levitical in origin) then these melodies could be maybe close to 3000 years old and would be the first notated art music in all of history to date!

@javiermandujano35 - that is the crux of the problem! The evidence is only at best circumstantial. The specific sect of Judaism which preserved the accents, even after their original meaning was lost after the destruction of the Temple, was particularly devout and precise in how it preserved the Hebrew text of the Torah (believing the words were quite literally the breath of God & the building blocks of the universe itself). In the end, it comes down to how these melodies so perfectly enhance the meaning of the original Hebrew text, that it is statistically far more likely, that whoever penned the text of the Hebrew Bible, also created the melodies which so perfectly gave these words all their meaning, weight and emphasis.

No, we don't. We have access to neither the music nor the phonetics of ancient Hebrew. It's not something we'll ever really be able to know for certain. We have the musical cantillation signs (Te’amim) on words, but different groups of Jews sing the different notes differently. We likely don’t have the original way of singing them, but there is some semblance in communities that have kept up with singing them with the Te’amim. It’s likely a chant more than a song by the way.

This video is influenced by an obvious Latin language, Roman Catholic choir . The closest one can get to understand the melody of the ancient Hebrew psalms is to look at how modern Hebrews sing the psalms...Miqedem! The Hebrew language will dictate the tone and melody. People sing to the Lord from the heart from the common tongue. If there were ancient Hebrews who sang like this choir it’d be the Pharisees with their many words and empty hearts.

Has the music been embellished? They are singing in harmony in certain places, and the earliest known use of polyphonic music is the tenth century AD. So either they added harmony to an original ancient melody, or this song is not 3000 years old.

It could be or a triangle, but more probable this sound comes from small finger cymbals, like the bellydancer's ones, called zill o sagat in various languages, or it's made with bigger finger cymbals, similar to the Indian Khartal, or even the heavier type, used in meditation, called tingsha. In the Torah it's mentioned that the sister of Moses, Miryam, played hand drum, tambourine, zills, so more or less all the stuff you still find in oriental frame drums, riq (headed oriental tambourine) and finger cymbals. It's not that impossible they used a modern simple alloy chime, called energy chime, very often, as it awakens concentration, too, in music therapy or pedagogic contexts. These sounds are all very similar to each other.

That is the crux of the issue - although the music (and its specific modes she deduced by an unbelievablely painstaking process of elimination to find precisely the right mode which best brings weight & meaning to the Hebrew text) sounds as if it were created at the same time as the text it accompanied, there is pretty much no means of ever verifying that the Te Amim accents were in fact, Levitical in origin, thus placing them at the time of the ancient Temple services. The only circumstantial evidence to support this assumption ,was that the specific Jewish sect who preserved the Te Amim were extremely devout regarding the preservation of tradition, even when the original meaning of that written tradition had long been forgotten.
