In this video, we'll look at a real historical HONEY of a guitar amplifier. This is NOT a reissue! This is an ORIGINAL 1964 Marshall JTM45 Super Tremolo Amplifier Model 1962, known affectionately as the "Bluesbreaker" after the John Mayall album "Blues Breakers", on which a young Eric Clapton played. It's always nice for me to see amps like this because so few of them exist, and also because so few of them exist in my part of the world.
The owner of this amp is also the owner of the Fender Champ I recently serviced. We sent the original speaker in that amp off for a recone at The Speaker Workshop due to a rubbing voice coil. While picking that amp up, he decided to bring along his Bluesbreaker, which has been sitting for over a year untouched, due to a badly punctured Celestion G12 T731 speaker, which apparently came originally in a Selmer amp? We are not sure. In this case, he wanted to avoid a recone if possible, so I'll show you how to fix a speaker puncture using a hot glue gun and we'll open up the amp and examine the guts. Then we'll plug it in and jam with some Glen Miller custom korina Gibson Futura and Flying V guitars.
This is the WORST speaker puncture I've ever attempted to fix using this hot glue method. If you DO need a recone on a vintage speaker, I highly recommend The Speaker Workshop in Fort Wayne, Indiana: bit.ly/RECONE

Some of the best greenback speakers I have ever owned had glued tears like this and they sounded amazing. I wouldnt recone it because the voice coil would be changed and the new cones and voice coil wouldn't sound as good in my opinion. Nothing wrong with a glued cone. Nothing at all.

I'm a Marshall guy in the UK but do lots of others . I also design and build combos that Marshall should have made back then , convert Valvestates to tube , that would include Trainwrecks and Dirty Little Monsters of course but also add my own touches when building an EL34 out amp by chucking in an EF86 as a second preamp tube . Just restored a Hi Watt Custom 100 fitting new caps inside the old cans and swapping out a couple of other components . I'm now converting a Vox 67 Traveller Solid State to an AC4 type combo using as many original parts as possible . The cabinet is the same as the AC10 etc. The construction of the Marshall and Vox cabinets are similar in that the front baffle is one piece bolted in all around. A saw cut takes the grill cloth and tolex with a length of trim wedged in to finish so not that easy . It can be invisibly repaired from the front using a darning technique by using butterfly plasters to hold it in position . Probably the hardest job to do on this as the more time taken the better the results . The Mullard mustards are normally all good but I have the spare 0.22 uf ones swapped out with Spragues in your example . I use plain toilet tissue and Titebond water based glue to repair cones and inner tube rubber solution to repair surrounds . This simulates the original manufacture of the cones . Having repaired much worse, the proof is tapping the cone all round and checking the pitch with an app . As far a strength is concerned there is no doubt that the single ply toilet tissue and re paper macheing the original paper and integrating it works good and my preferred method . When repairing the rubberised surround use the but end of artist's paint brushes the match the suspension valleys . The hardest areas areas are behind the basket frame .

Nice guitars and chording by Dan !! I have #7032 ~ very similar down to the missing handles , broken rubber piece on the cloth power tube retainer and repaired speaker ! My speakers are the original Silverdale Rd gold label Celestions. On my amp the tremelo only works on the #2 channel. I use mine @ 110v through a controlled voltage variable auto transformer. Lucky to have the voltage selector 110v on top of the power transformer. Congratulations Dan on moving forward with the restoration !! Since your grill tear is in front of the speaker the grill can be sewn with a curved needle and thread without having to remove the baffle. I had it done on some white grill pa cabs with some grey and white thread to match the color with very good results.

When you said that you don't see a lot of these down your way, it got me thinking about the vintage Gibson (and other US) amps that we don't see that much of over here (UK) that you have repaired and demo'd. I always use 2-ply toilet paper where you peel it back to have thinner pieces of one ply. I thin out some white glue then dip a small paint brush into the glue and paint the toilet paper onto the cone. Works like a charm! Just add a touch of spray paint to make it match up the color of the cone.

@Ringo Starr if you have a favorable tear that works great. since wood glue will really grab pulp paper... but If you've got a situation where you actually have to put a little bit of tension on the repair and experiment with the as you're doing it the hot glue is probably the best way to go

Where this model really shines is the great mid hump you get from those KT66 power tubes. The cleans aren't that bright, especially with humbuckers, but it overdrives great. KT tubes require a lot of filament supply current compared to more modern power tubes, so it's not easy retrofitting them into amp where the power transformer wasn't designed to handle them. I've tried and have usually had to resort to pedals to get that sound.

Clapton bought his in late 1965. late November or early December. The specs on these amps were in a state of consistent change. That’s why there’s no way to know what the exact specs of his amp were. He bought his right as they were switching to ceramic speakers. Most people believe his speaker were alnico but I’m not so sure those 15 watt alnicos could’ve held up to him playing it fully cranked night after night. Although it’s a 30 watt amp it puts out closer to 50 when cranked and that’s how Clapton says he kept it to get his sound. Any opinions on this? I’m certainly no expert. I have a Marshall 1962HW. It’s my favorite amp that I’ve ever played. I use it with an attenuator though.

Brad.. just a FYI .. the 1960's Mullard ECC83 made in GB with yellow lettering denoted higher quality. Through the early 70's the yellow ones were made in Holland by Philips at Eindhoven. The UK made ones reverted to white paint and the HQ ones had an added yellow spot. That lovely yellow GB tube was made in Blackburn Lancashire. I have a full set of 3 in my 1967 Laney Session 50 and they really cook.

Wow that amp sounds great! Anybody who's ever used a hot glue gun knows what a PITA it is to control the flow. Once you push on the trigger it starts, but it continues after you let off the trigger. Then you have to deal with the "strings" that hang when you pull the tip away. This is a job well done. Edit: Forgot to mention those 2 guitars. DAMMIT MAN!!! Absolutely beautiful.

Wow. It really sounds good. From a modern day guy, I can see why they would want this stuff. People might say they don't have a lot of distortion. Maybe not excessive, but this goes a long way and all of it is good sounding. Perhaps the guitar plays a part as well, but boy, it's lovely. And this wasn't even miked. He's a great player too, really nice groove. The thing with these kind of amps is that you don't have to need the sound that's coming out of it for your music. You can just get inspired by it and forget what's your preferred tone.

What would this amp sell for? How about those tubes? I think you almost said these are worth....but then you stopped. This amp has a beautiful sound! I have always played tube amps since I started playing in the early 80's, Always Peavey's, all I could afford. Bought a Boss Katana about 6 months ago, and it made me physically ill to play it! So I bought a Peavey Valve King 212 100 watt combo and all is right in the world now! Love your channel, subbed a few days ago and have watched nothing else since then! Keep up the awesome work!

What a sweet(!) amp. Early Marshalls... There's nothing quite like 'em... What other amp can do AC/DC and jazz AND sound like it was taylor made to do both...

For years the speaker screens where Hoover vacuum cleaner bag cover fabric since I guess the store was close in proximity to where Marshall made his amps just incase you wanted to replace the cloth with vintage spec cloth there some times easy to find I've had luck at old vacuum repair shops lol

I hear apocryphal stuff all the time, but if the vacuum cleaner cloth is the same stuff, it would indeed be interesting. I know exactly the stuff you're talking about. It's semi rubbery.

@@TheGuitologist that was the info at the Marshall amp museum it's like that real old style where you put a bag into the material I'm talking about the few vacuums I used were like mid 60s where the whole vacuum part is shiny silver and the bag is just like hung on the back with a zipper I dont think a single bag could do a 4×12 cab but there perfect size for the small combo amps :)

I use tissue paper and Damar Varnish brushed on with soft artist brush for cone repairs like that. The varnish is very watery and dries quickly . The tissue is a single ply split from Toilet paper, Very thin but reinforces the repair. The strips only need to overlap the tear by about 6mm. Damar Varnish is also useful to repair paper cones which have gone soft and floppy.

I always enjoy your videos and your guitar playing. It was nice to hear your friend play and the differences between two guitar players and their styles. Ive always loved tube equipments and have messed around with them since I was a child. Thats how I learned. I just wish I would have learned to play guitar. I have tried many times just never got good at it.

When the Futura/ Explorer and Flying V came out, I was like remembering. They had these hanging up at the music store in the 70s and we weren't allowed to try them out because of the price tag. All gold hardware...they were pretty to look at. I was able to try out an original 57 gold top Les Paul once though... that was sweet.

what's crazy is I found an old Marconi tube powered radio from the 50s and there's so many of the same caps in there . It's got 2 6v6 push pull screw it it's gonna be my first build . I'm an electrician. by trade I know that's not an amp tech nut it's all the same if you can read a schematic and get help understanding what values you need and how you get them your holden

I was going to write this off as a crappy amp until I heard the flying V plugged in. It seems the guitar pickups really make a difference with this amp. To bad we didn't get a Zio appearance to see how that sounds through this amp.

Thankfully I have never blown a speaker but if I do I will try this. Had a bass port fall of of a QSC sub. Gorilla glue fixed that stringer than it ever was.

Thoroughly enjoyable. The dulcet tones of well made instruments. Still want that lunch box amp! Cool flower cabs, too. Never got to play an actual old Marshall so I converted an Ao35 into an 18watt lite with a new OT. I was pleasantly surprised with the clean tones! Im stoked about the overdrive ,of course. But with a good speaker, the cleans can be just as inspiring as the blackfaces I’ve tried. It’s a great amp.

Would the added weight of the glue on just one part of the speaker cause the coil to rub? If so, it may be a good idea on a large repair to add a similar amount of glue 180 degrees from the repair, kinda like balancing a tire? Dunno, just a thought. You would think there would be some kind if doped paper fiber type product or maybe a structural paper tape for these types of repair.
