The Original Items of Super Mario Maker 2

Super Mario Maker 2 is meant to be a course designer tool for the Mario series, so with that of course, several items from the series itself. Despite that though there are several items completely original for the Mario maker series, stuff like new power ups like the master sword and SMB2 mushroom to even some enemies in gizmos. Today I’m going to take a look at the Mario Maker 2 original items and see what they do and how good they are as items!

I'd been using Clear Conditions as the litmus test for identifying as an enemy, with the score yielded from the Moon as a backup. The Rotten Mushroom yields 200+ points from the Moon, yet isn't destroyed by POW Blocks. I just erred on the side of caution.

Funfact: the link dash actually runs the same speed as sprinting normally, the only difference is that you any enemy you hit is killed so it is bassically sprinting and spamming the attack button

The Twister could've had so many useful interactions. For example, you could've put it in pipes to create a gust which has similar properties to the bubble streams from NSMBDS. (Speaking of, So many missed opportunities to add stuff from NSMBDS.)

I miss the silly filters and wall breaking ability of the big mushroom in SMM1. The SMM2 version is pretty bad in comparison. Now you can only break blocks above and below.

The master sword would be better if once you have the power up if you took damage you wouldn’t lose the power up instead it could be like a hearts System or if they get hit they just die and not turn into regular Mario. Edit: Thanks for 100 likes!

ive seen puzzle levels that use the link suit for some small portions, and that would make losing the powerup more difficult and make those puzzle levels need more room to force you to lose it. starting out with 1 heart and collecting more would be better so those type of levels could still be how they want to be.

Yeah, true! They could have a number of pre-set hearts or maybe one heart for how many 1-ups you have, finally giving them a use other than endless and super worlds!

Having been a Mario Maker fan since the first game, there are a lot of uses for things I don't think you're aware of. The Big Mushroom, for example, can be used to make platforming levels where you can only jump once/in specific places or you fall to your doom. It can also be really fun to have a level about moving upwards to get a Big Mushroom, then break the floor as a shortcut back to the bottom of the course where you started - and use it there to break an obstacle stopping you from getting to the goal. It also changes Mario's size, which makes it much harder to avoid hazards and enemies as your hitbox grows bigger. It's also great for troll levels which, while very niche, are very popular on youtube and Twitch. Also, some items in this video get talked down because they lend themselves to having levels built around them rather than being dropped into any level, others in the last half get complimented for this without it being called out as a downside. I like the overall video and it's presented well, but a lot of it comes across as personal opinion without much research or experience with certain items. I feel like the part that mentions shelmets are used in "big machines" (or "contraptions" as we say in the Mario Maker community) was definitely researched, but other items were just toyed around with in the editor in-game and limited experience.

Well piranha plant exists as a playable character. Dry bones could make it, but if that was the case it would probably just be a normal koopa. and I doubt that they would make a less iconic character just for a bone projectile

I think the Red POW Box is a bit more useful than you give it credit for. It’s certainly not groundbreaking or anything, but I have seen some very creative puzzle levels using it that require the player to be strategic with where and when they use the 3 pow explosions. I do agree overall though that 90% of the time you can very easily just use a Red POW Block. Very well put together video, by the way. Looking forward to the moon ranking video.

Twisters first debuted in SMB3, even if there was only one in the entire game. Tornado-like objects were in a multitude of other Mario games too, like NSMBDS and both Galaxy games. The only thing new about them in SMM2 is that there’s small white creatures producing the twisters now.

15:16 actually fire sledge bros made an appearance in the super Mario World show, specifically in the episode where Luigi takes care of a baby yoshi (the episode where Luigi says “that’s mama Luigi to you mario) the baby yoshi is attacked by the fire sledge bro. Edit: thanks to @Egon 370 it was actually a fire sumo bro, not to be confused with a normal sumo bro. Does the fire sumo bro do anything different than a normal sumo bro? I always thought you should've been able to place Twisters into pipes, not so that they would spawn out indefinitely, but so that the pipe sends out wind in the direction it's facing, kind of like some underwater levels in nsmb wii. Maybe the different colors could have sent out wind at different intervals or at different lengths

I just thought of an idea for the Master Sword: You would only have the sword, but if you were to get the other powerups, mainly the Big Shroom or the Fire Flower, you could gain the ability to use Arrows or bombs, even having both active.

Honestly if they add 1 more exclusive item for the 4 gamestyles in smm3 they could do, nsmbu, ice flower, penguin suit and Smw, power flower / wings for yoshi along with yellow and blue yoshis Smb 3, hammer suit Smb 1, a powerup from super mario bros special such as the hammers (Bonus) 3dworld, maybe add a throwable hat that doesn’t take control of enemies just for parkour or the speed flowers from oddysey, as a replacement to the car or speed pannels.

I think the Ice Flower could work as an universal power up like the fire flower. Even in the SMB style, where you can't grab items, it'd still be a really good power up. And I know the Ice Flower wasn't present in the earlier games, but so is the case for a lot of other things in Mario Maker.

I used the big Mario power up to make an Ice Climber inspired level One issue was that I wanted to add enemies, but if Mario were to get hit by one he’d lose the power up and you need the power up for the level to work :/ wish it was possible to make a power up last the whole level so you don’t have to constantly have pipes to give you more.

I didn't really care about the Master Sword, but I think they missed a cool opportunity with a Kirby power up. The player could have 1-2 midair jumps, the classic inhale/spit and even a basic copy ability if a shell-based enemy is swallowed that would work like the Blue Shell power-up in NSMB.

Did you know? If you ride a fire yoshi with a fire flower it shoots three fireballs? Using this and the same mechanic with the fire clown car you can ride a fire yoshi in a fire clown car meaning you shoot SIX FIREBALLS I hope this helps 😊
