I don't want to be that guy that makes the sad scene sadder. But I think another way to look at this that's equally if not more heartwrenchingly bleak is that the line isn't actually a lie. Literally speaking at least it's completely true. "With this Collar, Zootopia Accepts Me" and they do, they accept him as a "Proper Predator citizen" in their Civilization. And so with it he is treated like every other "Proper" Predator Citizen with the same laws, rules, and consequences. Even as a child. The statement IS true,....it's just incomplete: "With This Collar Zootopia Accepts You". *Without it, they don't.*

I actually like how more complex Nick's morality is in this version.. i think the final film would have been better if they had put more focus on the motive for his crimes like they do here. In this version, nick breaks the law to help preds or out of very visible neccessity. It's a lot more clear how messed up the system is if you are a predator. They even use one of the antagonists to give sympathy to in the 'taming party' which is interesting since Judy would have probably seen him as 'another predator criminal' (like nick) beforehand.
@ivandphantom90288 ай бұрын
I dont think the Polar Bear is much of a villain.... he's a mafia boss yes, but he was betrayed (allegedly) by Nick. Thing is, even with his money he lent a helping hand to Nick. He has morality, he sees himself in Nick, and honestly, he's a chill dude. =]

I suspect those kind of jokes were cut down on because they are English specific, and Disney movies have to work in a multitude of languages. Not that no puns or US-specific cultural references made it into final movie, but cutting down on jokes that will look like complete non-sequitors to most of your audience is, unfortunately, the smart thing to do when you’re making an international blockbuster. (Then again, Zootopia specifically might have worked really well as a more indie movie that could have gone HAM with the English-only puns and the dark themes. But then it shouldn’t have been pitched at Disney)

I remember this scene very well… that poor little “big bear” wasn’t aware of what the collar could do and we can tell that his father was very worried about him as the moment he was reading the oath. And I believe this is the moment where Judy understands what the predators, like Nick, is going through. And Nick too was feeling upset about this cause of the flashing yellow light. 😢 this is the saddest scene to see from a pilot plot and I’m kind of in the middle of it glad and sad that this wasn’t in the Final Cut. The reason why I’m glad that it didn’t is because it would’ve raise a lot and I mean ALOT of questions and concerns about the theme in this movie and I’m sad is because I could see this being a very common thing like the Jim Crow laws. God damn, this is dark. Even simply feeling too happy as a predator was considered bad. The cub was so happy and proud to become an adult and have a collar like all the adults did... and then immediately regretted it as he learned what it did. :( This original plot definitely has some angry moments where the viewer just feels angry for the victims of an unfair society, but that's what makes the movie great and what makes us cheer for the victims and hope everything will turn out well in the end. The scariest and angriest part of the final film was when little Nick joined the scouts and was immediately betrayed by having a... muzzle? Put on his mouth, and got bullied by the other kids. That definitely lit a fire inside me and I wanted to just grab him and pull him away and kick the little brats who hurt the poor kit. But that scene was pretty much it, I think, for getting angry. This original plot seems to have quite a few of those, like the taming party, Nick being darted and running wild, and probably a few other things. Also Judy seems a lot more, uh... hardcore? Harsh? Badass? Here? Not sure what word to use here, but she definitely doesn't seem as green as in the final movie. Is what I mean.

I wouldn't lie is a more interassing premise, but they wanted to push a racism allegory and with this plot it was muddled, and the other messages of "hiding who you really are" and "needing to be always friendly to people that hates to not get in trouble" would appeal more to minorities and it could easily offend the majority white Christian market, and no big corporation would ever do that, just see how many of these same group reacted to Lorax from Illumination, a movie with no bite whatsoever. You can see that the final movie they had a tiny bit of these messages and many reactionaries and conservative news stations made some articles and videos, but it not being the main plot of the movie it quickly died down.

That collaring scene was fucking tragic. Also, Nick as the protagonist instead of Judy is a little more interesting to me, but I kind of get why they made Judy the protagonist in the end. She was probably a better character for the audience to sit with while being introduced to Zootopia and understanding all its flaws, whereas if we started the movie with Nick, it would've been harder to introduce the audience to that society since there's nothing for Nick to be introduced to himself. He's already lived in it his whole life. This original plot is still a very compelling narrative, but I get why they may have shifted focus later on. Still, this original concept is pretty wild

This would absolutely be a movie I'd kill to watch. Also, I just want to mention how raw and powerful the taming party scene is. The literal chain of society a predator has to wear and how it affects everything they do, how they're not allowed to feel emotion and how strained they are from living a good life. Just like one of the top comments mention, *7:46* The yellow glow of Nick's collar in this scene is an absolutely brilliant and soul-crushing piece of wordless storytelling. The subtle glow of sorrow and despair that he shares with his kind.....

This really needed to be an actual movie, I really wish this was the official movie… I hope this could be a prequel in the future

Whilst the existing version of Zootopia is definitely good and retains ideas of morality and the concept of predator rights over the safety of prey, this one would have been so much better. Possibly not as child-friendly as the final cut, but the social commentary in this would have been so much more powerful imo. As much as I like Judy, I really think it would have been great for her character development to see the collar ceremony, and I would have loved to see the background behind Nick's criminal life besides that one flashback of him in cub scouts.

icl the collars having lights that change with emotions is a really powerful storytelling device tbh

people are saying this wouldve been “too dark” of a movie and im here to argue against that. if guillermo del toros pinocchio could be made and reach such a wonderful success i think the same can be said about the original zootopia. buts its very clear how the people supervising the movie had a problem with portraying raw racism and segregation, which i take issue with. THIS version of zootopia wouldve been so much better solely because its not bootlicking police. im almost mad this didnt get to the big screens. but im just disappointed

5:28 i remeber seeing that sceneeeee, i also remeber sm said this one was too much and then they kinda canceled this lore of zootopia and redid it. Damn the scene does hit hard.

i wish disney would go back to making heavier plots. Zootopia felt like Sing! with cops😭

Zootopia came out way before sing… but you are right. They are practically the same.

not gonna lie I feel like if this was shown a lot of people would have had people really talking about how we really see and treat each other. I don't see a reason why this couldn't be shown.

Fucking taming party...oh my fucking god. Dude? I will never forgive the entertainment industry at large for cutting out storylines like these. Sure, it may have been too much for kids but this story is SO IMPORTANT.

It's really interesting to see how they fit the old stuff into the new movie, being chased by mr manchas, the waterfall, the polarbears, etc. Super cool.
