I wouldn’t say generic, but for what it was, if they went with this design over the one they chose in the end Shrek wouldn’t be as big of a phenomenon as it is today. It seems initially the project took a dark and edgy tone compared to the lighthearted comedy of the final release.

⁠@@priwncessyes indeed it was, people have been trying to find this animation or basically just anything about the Chris Farley version of Shrek for YEARS. Up until a year or two ago, all we had were the storyboard snippets that were a couple seconds long. I remember watching plenty of videos about this topic when I was younger about 5 or 6 years ago (may have been possibly sooner my apologies). Amazing how far the community has come to find more footage of the original film (Pre-Mike Myers ver.)

This might not be a story interesting enough for sharing, but the first song in the end credits for Shrek is an original song titled ‘Stay Home’ by sELF. It was originally meant to be the opening song for Shrek when he’s having his daily routine. I actually love the song ‘Stay Home’ more than All Star because it describes Shrek’s former personality of not needing anyone but himself. But I think Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted to use All Star from the very start of production, so the song was abruptly cut one day out of the blue and moved to the credits. Though I can understand Katzenberg’s decision. All Star definitely gave Shrek one of the most iconic opening scenes

You can really tell Dreamworks was new to CG animation back then. To be fair though, it's not a bad first attempt. While some of it looks stiff and lifeless, some of it is also animated pretty well, with the music and over exaggerated movements being a nice touch. Still awesome to see this after only having a couple of shots to go off of. It does make you wonder though what it would have become if they had stuck with this style for the final product.

Oh it probably would’ve been terrible 😂 I mean.. I’m assuming it would’ve had the same message as the movie that was released, but a lot of people would’ve been thrown off or not interested due to the animation and the character design, leaving a very small but sincere fan base of those who actually would’ve enjoyed it. That’s my guess. I’m happy with what we received in terms of story, character design, and voice acting. It is targeted for a bigger audience while still keeping its sincere meaning. But yes… you never know

It's bizarre trying to picture the events of modern Shrek in this aesthetic. This original Shrek doesn't have potential for any character depth, and it might just fit some dodgy gamecube videogame trailer where you get to smash npcs, but to make it into a movie that's trying to reflect on morals and personalities via human interactions, hardly. Just think of how the many interactions and encounters would have looked like in a setting like this, such as Shrek saving Fiona and becoming partners, Lord Farquaad making his appearance, Donkey becoming friends.

It’s hard to pick which Shrek design I prefer because I love both for different reasons. Like yeah this one is ugly and scary but it oozes a lot of charm and it kinda fits the whole “ogres are supposed to be ugly” The modern shrek design is nice too but it’s too clean and kinda handsome looking (same with Fiona tbh) like they aren’t really monstrous but more look like green humans with funky ears. The old shrek design from 1995 just kinda hits in a good way.

And thus, the quest has come to an end. The full short of Farley Shrek has been found after many years of just having screenshots, audio, a storyboard and some low-quality footage. This is literally the only lost media I ever cared about, so it feels good (no pun intended) to finally see it in action.
