To be fair, sometimes you have to execute an idea before you get why it's bad, that's kind of the point of doing test animation in the first place. Perhaps his vision was more kid friendly than even he himself realised and it took seeing what other people made of it to recognize why it wouldn't work. Also it may seem harsh to fire them, but I doubt it was malicious, he likely just wanted a team that would be specialized in making a kid friendly version rather than getting people he hired to do a dark and edgy version and instead force them to make it kid friendly.

My favourite thing about Shrek is how it just absolutely refuses to die. Other unrealized projects of Chris Farley (due to his passing) included his role as Atuk in a film version of Mordecai Richler's *"The Incomparable Atuk"* (which would've also had Phil Hartman as the antagonist); Ignatius J. Reilly in a film adaptation of John K. Toole's *"A Confederacy of Dunces";* a young male "height-fearing" Brachiosaurus named Sorbus in Disney's *"DINOSAUR"* (his character was changed in the final version as an elderly female named Baylene); and his first serious acting role as the tragic silent-film comedian Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle in a biopic that was written by David Mamet.

hmmm, the Fiona alternate origin is a new thing I've learned from this video. I see part of the whole locked in a tower thing and suppressing the info that their daughter is an ogre I feel like little detail kind of got spread into Shrek 2 and 4 as far as the King and Queen's reasons and what they did. The Witch potion thing was a different angle that i thought was kind of interesting as far as giving her day and night human forms. I think i prefer what we got with Meyers and Diaz with the Shrek movies that were released in our timeline. But I think I have some morbid curiosity to maybe see what a completed Farley and Garaffalo Shrek would've been like as far as style and tone. Seeing that test footage version that got leaked a while back was really creepy and a little nightmare inducing 😅. But I really wish there's some alternate timeline out there in the cosmos where Chris Farley's support network were able to help him with his addiction demons that were plaguing him back then to get the help he needed as well as fighting his body dysphoria (i think that might've been part of it, i might be labeling it wrong) and healing his pyche. And maybe see the movie as they were originally trying to make. like you mentioned with Garaffalo being a little more sarcastic and cynical with her performances and comedy, I'm kind of curious what her Fiona would act and look like in both human and Ogre forms. I wonder if they had any character designs for that or some test footage that's around somewhere. Also thank you for including the other works of the author who wrote the book version of Shrek. I saw the cover of the book, but have yet to have a chance to read the whole thing and see everything in it. The B-roll made me remember something. I have seen this author's stuff before. I think I read one of The Dr.DeSoto books as a kid. Thanks for the memory-blast.

It really is incredible that we got the classic that we did. I, like lots of people, was honestly blown away and charmed by the final film. The gentle boisterousness and sharp wit that Meyers brought to the character gave Shrek a little more confidence, which the character needed. He's a rebel with a cause, himself. It sounds like they really streamlined the whole story and better sold the "being accepted for who you are" theme. It's too bad we lost Chris Farley, but this film was an indictment on what eventually took him out of this existence. He was a brilliant comedian, which was sadly always overshadowed by his physical presence and push into child-like characters.

Fun fact: During early development, a sequence shoed Shrek stumbling on a witch to help him guide him through his journey. She would've had Donkey as a slave that Shrek would've possibly rescued or she would let him follow Shrek. In later drafts, instead there was supposed to be a scene later on where Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey go through an enchanted forest and end up at a witch's gingerbread house to meet the witch from the Hansel and Gretyl story named Dama Fortuna. Her whole front lawn was completely booby trapped with lasers and sticks that come out of the ground. Shrek had to dive through all these things. Cute little bunnies would jump up and shoot blow darts at him as he tried to do a military jump and tumble to get into the house and save Fiona and Donkey. He ends up getting trapped himself and the three of them are hanging near a cauldron while this witch is mixing a brew and the three of them sort of work together to turn her spell back on her. It was cut due to being too long of a sequence. This character went as far as being designed through maquettes, concept arts and was supposed to be voiced by Linda Hunt, who would've been added with the main four stars in the marketing. And although this never happened, the character was reworked into Shrek 2 as The Fairy Godmother.

Fun Fact: Miramax attempted to snatch the movie rights away from DreamWorks who were also interested in making it. And initially wanted Henry Selick after finishing The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. Selick was interested in the project and possibly would've been a stop motion movie. It was dropped when DreamWorks refused to sell the rights and Selick decided to work on Dark Town (which had it's own troubled production as Monkey Bone the same year Shrek came out.) DreamWorks was actually interested in going with stop motion at first and did test animation but didn't like the results, feeling it lacked emotions that they wanted. They also considered having live action backgrounds (much like Dinosaur 2000) but didn't look right when they tested it. (Whether or not the human characters were also gonna be live action is unknown.)

Another awesome Vid! Very interesting, I had no idea about the production of Shrek! As we said we love Chris Farley, especially his performance in 1997's 'Beverly Hills Ninja'. Also really like Janeane Garofalo, she's fantastic in anything she's in!

@@Bulletsandblockbusters right was just thinking about that watching this episode heck came back to watch again. guys have links to other vids but not making it or using it like a dvd extra and your content would fit this perfect for 1. you get so much in such a short run time which is crazy but great for hardcore yotube watchers who lose interest fast with longer form vids and this would be perfect with your style and 2. for us super-fans of show like you could pop them midweek to hold us down till Saturday morning.

Myers’ version of Shrek is definitely what was better for business. I have a feeling that Farley’s version would have only fed into the image people had of him . The Chippendales sketch from SNL is really hard to watch now as it created his career but destroyed him as a person.
@davidjames579 Жыл бұрын
It's sad as it looks like he's owning any insults anyone could throw at him by making it his material and having a successful career out of it. But it isn't as simple as that, and it's still a real person and their body. He may have made lemonade but at what cost.

I see it similarly to Antz where it's good, but I don't think modern audiences would be too keen on the darker look and nightmarish designs.

My girlfriend at the time talked me into going to see Shrek and I was like “why the fk would I go watch a cartoon at the theater” and wound up laughing my butt off the entire movie. It really was fantastic and a breath of fresh air. Had no idea the humor was gonna be up my alley by the movie posters. Also, as much as I love Chris Farley, Shrek wouldn’t have had the staying power. Acting just wasn’t his forte. He was physical comedy. It takes a *very* different set of skills to be a voice actor. And Janeane Garoffalo (sp?) as Fiona would have been annoying. That would have been a LOT of heavy lifting for Eddie Murphy to carry the movie, which he might have been able to pull off *because* Donkey is so perfect, but I still don’t see the original having the staying power as it is now.
