As we approach the 25th anniversary of the space horror cult classic Event Horizon, Adam examines one of the original spacesuits from that film, now in the collection of Prop Store founder Steven Lane. Adam and Steven discuss how this suit was used for the film, and how FBFX embedded electronics and lights into its fabrication. These spacesuits were designed by Jon Mollo, the costume designer who created the spacesuits for the original Alien!

I had a very similar reaction seeing alien when I was 10. I say seeing it I never got past the chest buster scene. Fuck me that was terrifying in ' 87. I honestly couldn't bring myself to watch it fully until I was almost 20, and even then it was so visceral if not as terrifying to see. Both great, great sci-fi horror movies.

I'm lucky to know an fx guy that worked on this film. While true the lost footage really is lost and was mostly shot on a closed set this things he did and saw were otherworldly. Even when they were shooting the crew were asking if this could possibly be shown. sadly all cut and destroyed as it was as close to sex, violence and mutilation you could get without really doing it.

The air filter system in the back of the suit is a Scott Procap Tornado respirator with the original battery pack and rubber hose. It's a very reliable and safe system used by the industry for welding overpressure helmets (meant for a Scott Procap helmet). The same filter system was used for space suits in the 2005 reboot Doctor Who TV series. Cool to see it being used in Movies like Event Horizon as well.

Adam's sci-fi nerd faux pas there and the feeling of sweat afterward was very relatable. I'm glad you kept it in. Having been through a few moments like that, I'm sure he's thought of hundreds of horror movies in space since then. I hate the horror genre usually (I have a friend who used to drag me to them all the time), but some like "Event Horizon" and much of the Aliens franchise are just so good that I do manage to enjoy them in spite of that. I think my favorite is "Sunshine", the 2007 film where they had to restart the sun with half the Earth's supply of kaboom after the mission with the other half mysteriously failed. Once you got past the brief exposition near the start the cinematography became amazing in setting a mood and keeping to it. And it had one of the most unique space suits as well. There's plenty to criticize about it, but it's one of those movies that does one thing and does it really well.

@@MostlyPennyCat I'm not a horror film person, so some of these may not be correct. I know thriller and horror have an intersection of some sort but I don't know where the line is. Ones I can remember on a space ship: - Aliens franchise / Prometheus - Sunshine - Gravity - Terror from Beyond Space - Pandorum - Life - Hellraiser Bloodline (very vague on this one, I just remembered the commercials implying it was on a space ship) - Cloverfield Paradox - 2001: A Space Odyssey - Critters 4 - Jason X - Leprechaun 4 - Dracula 3000 Once I can't remember on a space ship: - One of the mid to late 2000s generic zombie films was set on a spaceship. Couldn't find the name of it but it was "dead" something and not "dead space".

Everything was going well, I didn't even freak out when I saw all the Gladiator props in the London factory! But then Grant (The Big cheese) invited me into his office for a cup of tea, and standing next to his desk was Justin's Event Horizon suit, and I INSTANTLY went from movie industry pro to gibbering giggling fan-boy!! There is photographic proof of this and my grin is INSANE!! 😁 Lovely crew at FBFX. 🏆 Best wishes from an armour-maker in a French forest. ⚒️⚔️🇬🇧

I'm a superfan with more than 400 viewings behind me and I have a few pieces from Event Horizon that I got from Steven. My prized possession is Miller's flightsuit (or one of them anyways). I also have name labels that were made for Cooper and Justin's EVA suits among other treasures. As an additional note I've heard that the magnetic boots actually worked. This suit featured here was nicknamed "Doris" by Laurence Fishburne and weighed about 65 pounds. The actors couldn't sit down in them so they had leaning boards that they would prop themselves against when they needed to rest.

I still lament the fact that I couldn't afford a CO2 scrubber prop he had for sale.

OK here's a thought. Event Horizon was one of the direct inspirations for the 2008 game Dead Space. And I notice that there's a lot of gauges and readouts for the status of the suit and health of the occupant on the back of the suit, the helmet and the front of the helmet, all where the occupant can't see them. Dead Space had an integral idea of putting status and health in the break of the suit where the user can't see but other people, including the player, can see. I now wonder if that idea came from the Event Horizon spacesuits. They put a health bar on just like Event Horizon and then realised they could extend that to create a HUD-less and more immersive experience. What do you think?

The colour coded suit was also used in very early Dr Who. Back in the black and white days, in order to sinc up the action with the script, the darleks were all painted differently. The script would say blue darlex speaks, red darlex response, etc. It didn't matter what colour they were, because to the audience they were all grey. It's only when they started broadcasting in colour that they then put a spin on it, by saying the colours were different ranks.

The thing I loved about the props and costumes from event horizon was the design of the patches! They managed to build a whole future world just through stuff like the US flag had more then 50 stars, the Australian flag Sam Neil’s character wore had a aboriginal flag replacing the union flag and the British actors had EU flags with more stars too. I always felt that those details helped so much with the immersion of the film.

🤔 knowing the problem with costume space suits, is it possible to design and build a system that fits under a costume space suit (or other heat stroke costume) to keep actor safe/comfy?

air and liquid cooling systems have been developed by what I heard, just now is less used because half the suits are FX

I think space suits are interesting as they're a combo of a suit of armour and a space ship. Thereby the astronaut is both explorer and knight/warrior.

just to defend Adam here, I'm sure Adam meant psychological space horror, which it is. vs physical space horror, which Aliens very much is.

Ussually thats what people asign to suspense and horror... Horror ussually being more random as you cant really expect the action, while on suspense it follows a chain for the consecuences.

I'm still super angry that they destroyed extended scenes. This movie is brilliant.

“Cool shirts” are actually NASA & Roscosmos technology. Cooling garments were developed for wear under space suits.

I would have loved to have seen one of the end sequence "Rescue" team suits that the wore because those looked much different, it was like a segmented metal bits overtop of what looked like a scuba diving Dry suit (with a rebreather on their back with a bunch of tubes running all over). The helmets where this like Japanese Samurai/ Darth Vader helmet looking thing with a full face mask that had tinted glass that retracted on the top and a metal mouth section with "RESCUE" painted across it.

Brilliant film love the scares and gore. Good take on what could inhabit hyperspace/warpspace. Is it just me or does the suit have a cheeky triforce symbol on the chest piece.
