The band Hannelimusig brings forgotten tunes back to life. For generations Swiss folk music was played by local musicians in private homes or at fairs in villages. It was mostly passed on orally. When records started being produced, traditional Swiss music was reduced to a more commercially oriented product. Thousands of old melodies would have been lost, had it not been for the efforts of Hanny Christen, who dedicated her life to original Swiss folk music. (Michele Andina, swissinfo.ch)

This is wonderful to hear, I just wish there was more of the actual music. My grandmother was born in a Romansch village in Switzerland but I never particularly cared for what you call Linder music. It's so predictable and bippity-bop. To hear the real traditional music played on a variety of instruments, with so much texture of sound, is something else entirely!

I have 2 Swiss folk songs which had been in my head for a long time and now they are on paper because I wrote them down for my cousin. My father's parents, 2 sisters and 3 brothers all immigrated to the U.S. from Switzerland. When I was a child I remember my grandma and her children singing these Swiss folk songs when we all had a picnic on a hill overlooking my 2 uncle's farms in Wisconsin. Hearing beautiful Swiss folk songs sung around a fire on a hill in the outdoors of Wisconsin on a summer evening, was very satisfying for me as a child. I will never forget them. Now I would like to know what the words are to these 2 tunes. I wonder how I could find out. Any suggestions?

Much of these lost music was played by my Grandfather, Rudi Bernet. He was originally from Grindelwald. My parents were both Swiss as well. I grew up listning to this musch and Schwizerdeutch language. There are a lot of Swiss in Portland Oregon and they still have a Schwing fest and there are many others in the Pacific Northwest. My grandfather played the BassGiga (Bass) and he also played the button accordian... He must have known a hundred different old tunes. We would dance around the room when he played. He was very good. I have cousins who also play. My cousin Lyle Schaefer is on you tube. My grandpa and his dad played a few times with the Mosher (sp) Brothers band. They used to be very famous. Good music.. Also Ronja Frankhauser, I too can still understand what the Swiss speakers say!

My parents had old 78 records of Swiss folk music that had belonged to my Swiss grandparents . I played them a lot as a young boy. The titles were (to me) unpronounceable so I cannot search for them on here, but I would recognise the melodies if they turned up! The instrumentation certainly sounds the same.

There is a "Concerto-Grosso" for the Hanneli-Musig and string orchestra on youtube, a journey through the different styles of swiss folk music with the band. It's great fun! Just search for "Hanneli-Concerto" on KZbin.
