The video states to wrap from collect up to the engine side. Would it hurt to start at the head and wrap down to the collector as long as the sown edge faces the collector?
@DesignEngineering4 жыл бұрын
It's not going to "hurt" to wrap that way - take it from someone who did it that way before working at DEI. The point of wrapping it the way we prescribe is to prevent premature fraying. The "sewn" edge should ideally be the edge that's visible, whether you wrap toward or away from the header. Think of it as a more built-up, calloused edge, that can handle more wear and tear.

So no silicone spray need to complete the instal?? can one use the silicone anyway? ... also... what if a guy was to use a ceramic paint prior installing the wrap.... would that cause any adverse affects?? ... thanks....
@DesignEngineering8 жыл бұрын
You do not need to use the silicone paint after the install. You can use it on Titanium but it is a different process for application. You would need to spray a coat on, run it through a heat cycle, add a second coat, go through a heat cycle then add a third. Because it is a different material than glass fiber, it soaks into it differently and needs a few coats and a few heat cycles for it to adhere properly. It will protect and prolong the life of the wrap and can be used. As far as having Ceramic paint on the header before wrapping, you can wrap over it. It will speed up the process of burning off the ceramic paint faster than it normally would, but it is OK to wrap over ceramic paint.
@zanastumasonis6 жыл бұрын
question: since wrapped and/or ceramic coated headers dissipate way less heat, and impressive results are often seen where the difference can be between 200f (treated) and 800f (untreated) does the heat tend to stay more in the block, or do the exhaust gases themselves simply get more hot inside?

Julian, The proper way to insulate the intake tubing would be to use a heat reflective material such as Reflect-a-Gold or Reflect-a-Cool. These will block radiant heat from soaking into the tube in turn keeping IAT's down. Exhaust wrap is meant to contain heat and is primarily intended for hot side piping.

@4speed3pedals Жыл бұрын
Not mentioned is the fact that if the overlap develops a gap and the tube is exposed, it is very possible that the exhaust will burn a hole through the steel. A friend had a Camaro running a 302 with manual trans and that happened to him. Plus, try to get all the way to the flange. Why risk it? Jere Stahl of York, PA (Stahl Total Tuned Headers), used to badmouth wrapping any header saying he had more repairs from wrap damage than for any other reason. ACP headers in Harrisburg is now making them exactly as the originals with the same methods and materials. Stahl headers were never cheap and it is a shame we lost him a few years ago. His wife had the website removed with all his instructions. My friend with the Camaro says that properly wrapped, the do work and horsepower is increased enough to make it worth the expense.

The fiberglass wrap is a much rougher surface and is a true tan in color.

Hi, i´m thinking about trying the Titanium wraps for first time on headers, but looking about opinions and experiences with it people talks about how this kind of wraps can damage headers because they keep moisture from condesation and it generates oxidation, is it true? Another question would be, how long does it last? do you need to renovate them? Thx in advance.
@DesignEngineering7 жыл бұрын
If it is used on a lesser quality header with a low quality steal it could. With our experience, water and moisture will not affect the header. The heat from the header dries the wrap so water will not sit in the wrap. And as long as you would follow the 1/4" overlap rule when installing, the right amount of heat will stay in the pipe and not overheat the metal. A lot of times if a header degrades, it is because the header is double wrapped, holds in too much heat and degrades the metal.

Probably a stupid question, the header I'm going to buy is made 100% of stainless steel. Will wrapping it with the titanium wrap be harmful or helpful on the steel? Just dont want any degradation of my header.... and does this also help with hp gains? Is it strong enough for long term usage?
@DesignEngineering8 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question at all. It will not degrade the metal. We tested wraps with a 1/4" overlap when wrapping. This lets the right amount of heat out of the metal to not affect it. We have seen people double wrap the pipes thinking that if one wrap is good, two is better. And this isn't the case. When you keep too much heat in the header by double wrapping, thats when problems occur. And it will help in power gains. Hard to say how many horsepower because there are so many variables. But it reduces the underhood temps so it cooler air is available to the intake and the engine. It also decreases the density of the exhaust gasses so it lets the whole system become more efficient.

+Gavin F We usually recommend a 2" x 50ft roll per V8 header. If it is a shorty header it will take a little less than that. But you will need more than 1 - 2" x 50ft to do both headers. As far as the temp heat reduction, it kind of depends on the motor and other mods you have done to the car but we usually see about a 45-50% decrease in heat under the hood from the headers.

When you see the same named product for a lower price, it has all to do with the materials used in the wrap and the heat capabilities. Many wraps will call themselves Titanium or Lava wrap but do not have the thermal capabilities and are not constructed from high temp basalt materials like DEI wraps or glass fiber with a propriatary coating. And many of the cheap price wraps come from out of the United States and they are basically cheap material knockoffs. DEI was the first to come out with the Titanium name product line back in 2006/2007. We used the name Titanium to signify the strength and color of the product and what it is capable of doing because of the high quality materials. All of our wraps are made here is the USA and we focus on performance standards above all.

Whats the point of wrapping? May sound like a dumb question but with or without stuff wrapped in my car i am not going to touch hot car parts. Lol
@DesignEngineering8 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all. It will help in power gains. Hard to say how many horsepower because there are so many variables. But it reduces the underhood temps so cooler air is available to the intake and the engine. It also decreases the density of the exhaust gasses so it lets the whole system become more efficient.

can also help protect other components around your manifold/header. for those people that dont have a heat shield. thats the reason im planning on doing this
@DesignEngineering8 жыл бұрын
It will help those other components as well. An added bonus.

Heat wrap destroys YOUR HEADERS.

*Yes! When made of craptastic mild steel of unknown origin. Good materials do not. Your handle is MadeInUSA and that is always a good position to start from. Perhaps you will begin your Strength of Materials course from Ron of TalkingMods, BSME Stanford and ~18 years owner of ModBargains in La Habra, CA. 20 minutes of your time well-spent.* kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJiVpYCFZcp3Y6c *Keep in mind the century-old adage: "Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?" and "Used oats are much cheaper than new oats". Yeah those ties are garbage. What a waste of $20. Just use worm gear clamps. So much easier. Look much better than the chicken wire that snaps when tightening with the tool.

Whats the purpose of wrapping hour exhaust header with titanium tape?
@siegfriedobrabender42158 жыл бұрын
I was told to wrap thick aluminum foil around the pipe before the titanium exhaust wrap, ButI was thinking thatthis could cause corrosion on the pipe. what do you think aboutthis method? Thanks
@DesignEngineering8 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend doing that. I have never seen it done but it does not sound like a good idea. It will have no benefit to the wrap at all. If you are thinking if the wrap gets wet will it rust the pipe? And the answer will be no. The heat that is in the header will dry the wrap. I would not recommend doing it.

siegfriedo brabender That method defeats the purpose. I would not try it.
