Sam Raimi once said that the story is told from Ash's perspective and he's an unreliable narrator. That's why the story changes each time he tells it. It's really down to rights issues as studios own different films. But come on Raimi's explanation does fit Ash's character so I'm going with that.

Now the cinematic journey is complete lol. It's hard to reiterate what Army of Darkness and this series means to a lot of people. I'm so happy that these movies have received the fan adoration that they have. My dad and I saw this at a small theater we'd go to almost every weekend, but this one was a special one for me. I expected the movie to be a lot more like Evil Dead 2, but I quickly settled in once I realized the tone it was going for. The three movies are all so similar but tonally different, with one being a straight horror movie, the 2nd a slapstick comedy horror, and the 3rd an adventure comedy. Army of Darkness is very much a Ray Harryhausen effects driven adventure film, such as Jason and the Argonauts or the Sinbad movies. I saw those Harryhausen movies at a young impressionable age, and cherished them, and so Army of Darkness and its end battle was one of the funnest times I've had at a movie. I have supreme respect for Sam Raimi for making the films he wanted to with the people he wanted to, and that's not something we see in film any more. Finally, I watched a fantastic "Making of Army of Darkness" video you can find on KZbin easily enough. It contains a ton of insight into the hard work and abuse of Bruce Campbell that went into the making of this film. Filmed on a shoe string budget, made with little to no studio support, resulting low box offices returns; Army of Darkness persevered to be recognized as the classic it really is.

There is an alternative ending, that was only aired at its release in acouple of countries, the audiences din't like it very much, cause they felt that after all Ash had gone through it was a real low blow and they wanted an happy ending, so they reshot the ending for the one you saw. The ending is like this: the Wise man cannot send Ash directly into the future, its out of his competences or something, but he can brew a potion that will put him in a Stasis sleep for a couple of centuries, until he wakes up back again in his own time. So they set him in a crypt safe, and he drinks the potion, and wakes up centuries later, only something went wrong, when he comes out of the crypt with a 7ft long beard and his throat parched, he see's that he Overslept a couple of decades/centuries and that the Apocalypse happened, with the world around him destroyed and him all alone, cursing to the Heavens like in the ending of Planet of the Apes( the OG one from the 70's)

Sure it would have looked even more different from the Shotgun he used in Evil Dead 2 but they switched from a single Barrel Shotgun in the first movie to a double barrel in the second so they clearly didn't care if the change was obvious.
