Only in sales. It was better than the PS2 in every way. The PS2 only led the sales race because it had a head start and was a DVD player. The Xbox was a year late and needed a remote to play DVDs. How good the Xbox was is why the Xbox 360 got such a strong start out of the gate. Microsoft exclusives were top notch during that decade as well. Sony had good titles, but none as impactful and iconic as Halo during that period. That's not to mention the extra power, hard drive and Xbox live.

In some ways yes the Xbox was suppose to be the next Dreamcast, but with SEGA having branched out into making games for other consoles, and portables soon after no it was not because SEGA did not remain exclusive to the Xbox. One thing that always puzzled me was why Microsoft never bought SEGA, and made them exclusive which would have given them an excellent 2nd party dev instead of buying RARE, and doing jack shit with it. but in hindsight I'm glad SEGA stayed 3rd party.
@Thomas-te2lg7 жыл бұрын
Actually I think Microsoft did want to buy Sega, but Sega refused. Also Microsoft did use Rare when they bought them, but pretty much any title Rare cooked up was generally lambasted.
@CommodoreFan647 жыл бұрын
Thomas Ruth if that's true, then it would have been down to SEGA of Japan, and their stubbornness. Far as RARE goes under Microsoft, the only thing they have remotely done well was RARE Replay, and it still did not make me want to go out, and buy a Microsoft console to play it, like RARE did in their glory days of the N64. In fact RARE games where one of the big reasons I got into collecting for the N64. So in my book that still counts as Microsoft not really doing jack shit with RARE.
@naughtygawd32697 жыл бұрын
True. I think the reason the xbox didn't sell well in Japan was the lack of Japanese titles
@CommodoreFan647 жыл бұрын
NaughtyGawd That had some part to play in it for sure, but Japanese consumers are very nationalistic overall, and prefer to support home grown companies such as Nintendo, and SONY over Microsoft when it comes to their console preferences. No outside console has done well in Japan, Atari failed, along with the Apple Pippin, and it even had the backing of Bandai. The main reason Apple has done so well in Japan far as their computers, and other hardware is because overall since the 80's they have had better support for typing, and displaying the Japanese language.
@JBadAss98Gameing6 жыл бұрын
It's not xbox's fault that RARE can't develop a game to save their own damned lives after the year 2001. As a company, they suck cock, and you must now accept that, or keep lying to yourself.

It's 100% the "spiritual successor" to the Dreamcast. There's too many defined links between the Chihiro board and the actual want of SEGA to make that the case... In a way I'm glad that's what happened. It's nice to know as a fan of the Dreamcast that when I turn on my original XBOX, I'm getting what SEGA would've basically made. As the Dreamcast was to the Naomi, the XBOX is to Chihiro. The home console version of the latest SEGA Arcade lineup. Great video.

I've always thought of the Original Xbox as the Sega Dreamcast's spiritual successor, mostly due to the similarity in the controller. I've never got on with Playstation controllers so I held on to my Dreamcast right up until the Xbox was released, which I traded it in for.

I owned the Dreamcast at launch and when it was dying there was talk back then that Microsoft had a strong working relationship with Sega and that their upcoming Xbox console would carry the torch for Sega...at least early on. Nevertheless, I went from Dreamcast to Xbox for that very reason alone. Games like Gunvalkyrie were actually originally developed for Dreamcast late in it's life and when the system ended development moved to Xbox.

Thank you for making this video. I have been saying since 2002 that the Xbox was the newer brother to the Dreamcast. The Sega games that went to Xbox, the 4 controller ports, the 2 ports on the controller used for memory and communication (Dreamcast had the mic stick and Xbox plug in for headphones). They both had built in internet connections. Back to the controllers, similar layouts, letters for buttons and almost the same colors for those buttons. I believe some of the very same developers of Dreamcast went over to Xbox. I love how you even went into the true technology that is used by both systems. I have been a long time Seag fan, well collections include Saturn and Dreamcast, so I approve of this video, since I was just going to make one....well now I can't. This is an interesting point I've been pondering recently. I'm predominantly a PC/PS/Nintendo gamer and so for that reason I'm glad they didn't buy Sega, but one would have to assume that Microsoft had discussions about it being a possibility early on. Consoles are driven by exclusive software, and if Microsoft could have said, 'We have all of Sega's games, we have Halo' etc, it would have been a much stronger value proposition from them. To this day, XBOX's biggest problem is worthwhile exclusive content beyond Halo and Gears.

From the looks of it, it really does look like Sega intended for the Xbox to be the successor to the Dreamcast, especially after hearing about the almost identical hardware their Chihiro arcade system had, but I think two things made them change their mind about working more closely with Microsoft: -The Xbox failed to keep pace with the PS2 in sales (24 million sounds like a lot, but the PS2 sold over FIVE TIMES that) -Seeing the value of developing games for other consoles vs. exclusivity I was actually shocked to find out the original Xbox only sold 24 million. Yes, I think it's pretty clear that the X-Box is pretty much the successor to the Dreamcast. The evidence strongly suggests that Sega wanted Microsoft to continue their legacy.

More like they wanted to go into business together and then something happened that ruined it; like Nintendo/SOny and all the other failed partnerships.

Microsoft replaced Sega when it came to console's but the Original Xbox was supposed to be nothing like the Dreamcast cause Sega and Microsoft are 2 completely different companies that was just a coincidence that Xbox controller came up to look like the Dreamcast controller
@mrnelsonius56314 жыл бұрын
Dreamcast was such an absolutely amazing system. I remember feeling like Sony was conquering simply by throwing a ton of money at exclusive titles, just TONS of them and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve owned every Xbox system released... and never owned a Sony console. So I guess subconsciously I never forgave them haha.

Xbox is by all means the Spiritual successor of the Dreamcast, so it is indeed the Dreamcast 2.
@KynosMusic4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, XBox was definitely a spiritual successor to the Dreamcast, and I must say, thank god they came along... I mean thank Gates for that, imagine if we ended up living in a world where you HAD to have a Playstation... that would've been a nightmare!!! Actually, just remembered Nintendo, I guess I would've just had Nintendos then... Not saying that Playstations are bad, it's just that their controllers are horribly uncomfortable, and generally they just suck, yeah =P - this opinion is obviously biased by the fact that Sony killed Sega (hardware), and I'll never forgive them for it, but also, if they were legit better, ok, but no, it's just hype trains and fanboys over there. Again, thank Microsoft for coming along with the XBox lineup, even if they do keep being the underdog in sales, we know who the "good" guys are, and making the best controller ever (so far) [the x360's] also helps their cause. Well that got a little sidetracked XD

I think SEGA was developing the system and financially went belly up after the failure of the dreamcast. So they probably sold their R&D for the new system to Microsoft.
@KimPossibleShockwave5 жыл бұрын
The original Xbox was literally made by a group of Microsoft's R'n'D guys cannibalizing three laptops into a prototype. They basically threw shit at the wall and looked at what stuck, lol.
@jSyndeoMusic4 жыл бұрын
@@KimPossibleShockwave Yep, the name even came from what the team building the device started casually calling it: "DirectX box", as it was a console being built around Microsoft's DirectX APIs. Marketing tried to come up with other unique names for it, but "Xbox" is the one that stuck.
@KimPossibleShockwave4 жыл бұрын
@@jSyndeoMusic Didn't know that, but it makes sense! Makes you wonder what else had origins like that, too.
@KuraIthys4 жыл бұрын
@@KimPossibleShockwave That sounds like a pretty bonkers way of building a prototype... But... It makes perfect sense that Microsoft would try and build a gaming console out of a PC... It's what they knew... And it would minimise how much work they would have had to do into building an operating system for the thing. Just take windows, strip out everything you can find that seems superfluous for a game console, put a new UI on it... Did you know in older versions of windows you can change the shell by changing a line in windows.ini? You can do stupid stuff like making, say, Notepad the shell, which means that's literally the only program you can run, and if you close it, windows shuts down. Yeah, that was amusing at the time... Also theoretically useful, but I don't know if anyone ever really bothered with it in any serious context... Still, when it comes to prototypes, seeing the Amiga must have been something else. A prototype running at a trade show off 3 giant wire-wrapped circuit boards, each the size of a small table in it's own right. Prototypes for the integrated circuits built out of discrete logic gates and components.... Which would fail so often they had to have someone on hand permanently just to fix the thing every couple of minutes. But, when it worked, it worked flawlessly... Just shows you what prototyping used to look like. XD

OG Xbox is Dreamcast 2, I mean look at it : the memory card that goes into the controller, the 4 controller plugs, Crazy Taxi 3 only for Xbox, and so on... And also for the Dreamcast, SEGA collaborated with Microsoft, so Microsoft collaborated with SEGA for the Xbox !!

Also Midtown Madness 3, an Xbox exclusive, appears to share some striking GUI similarities with Crazy Taxi. After learning more about the intricate relationship between Sega and Microsoft during that time, I'm even more surprised that the NGC was prioritized by Sonic Team for most of their games during the sixth console generation, starting with the Adventure 2: Battle port.

Much more powerful than the PS2.
@CommodoreFan647 жыл бұрын
Even the GameCube was more powerful then the PS2, it only won that generation mainly because of the built in DVD drive for movies that did not need a special remote to access like the Xbox, and when the PS2 was released in Japan it was the cheapest DVD player in the country.

Randomthingz2show Randomthingz2show True, back then the SONY name still held some weight for "quality" even outside of gaming products, and even more so in Japan, so I'm sure that had a factor in the success of the PS2 as well, but how times have changed because now outside of home console gaming(even that's starting to faultier somewhat for them), few people think of SONY as their go to brand for electronics, it's now Samsung who holds that spot for a lot of people, or who ever is the cheapest on sale at Walmart or Amazon that day they need something.
@gavinr91077 жыл бұрын
Commodorefan64 the PS2 was the best selling console of all time. The DVD component does not account for that being the sole reason it was so successful. The games library was massive and it had a lot of great exclusives and third party support. Give credit where it is due.

Hardware alone doesn't mean much. The PS3, if programmed for properly, is a beast. However, it was a nightmare for devs compared to the 360. If you can't take advantage of the hardware, power means nothing.

My understanding of the ST-V and Naomi boards is that they are actually based off the console hardware, which would make sense given that they're very similarly specced with the exception of more RAM, and maybe a change in storage format (a common theme among console-based hardware, other companies have done this as well). In fact, original Naomi boards used GD-ROMs which were developed for the Dreamcast. So I think it's probably accurate that the home hardware was developed first. There's just no way you're going to design these kind of hardware for arcade first, and then just magically make it work for home consoles by decreasing the RAM and calling it a day. Likewise, with Chihiro Sega was already working on Xbox titles, so it made sense to take the same basic design and add a little RAM to it. This is the brilliance of console-based hardware (or in this case perhaps, PC-based hardware, a route which Sega continued) being used in arcades; with a bit of tweaking, they can scale the game down to work on the nearly-identical console hardware with little effort. It made total sense for Sega to move on to Microsoft's console once they determined they were exiting the console hardware business. Why would they work with Nintendo, a long-time rival who continued to make their own esoteric hardware? Meanwhile, Sony, the company that nearly single-handedly killed them, had their own difficult hardware to develop for. Microsoft's PC-based hardware was a perfect fit. The original Xbox was languishing in the Japanese market, so it made perfect sense for Microsoft to cater to Japanese developers, and who better than the Sega brand that held strong even when the Saturn was flailing in the US market? I don't doubt that Sega saw the Xbox as their spiritual successor to the Dreamcast, but what I do doubt is the notion that they had anything to do with its development. The original Xbox started development long before Sega exited the hardware market and was finalized well before Sega had a chance to influence it. Sega saw the potential of the hardware, having ported titles to the PC in the past, and realized it was their chance to develop for someone that wasn't one of their main competitors for the last decade and/or had hardware that wasn't a pain to program for (and it helps that Microsoft was really trying to cater to developers at that time). Sega had nothing to do with the development of the Xbox and they were simply a third-party publisher who preferred to work with Microsoft rather than its rivals. That's it.
