The show pulled that symbol from Norse Mythology. It's the symbol of Jörmungandr, the snake/dragon son of Loki, who is wrapped around the whole Earth under water, biting his own tail. Of course, though, it has a different meaning and/or origin in the show. Though, I find it interesting that even The Vampire Diaries used Old Norse symbols (example: the hand tattoo of The Five is the Vegvisir, the Viking compass). It's even more interesting because the Mikaelson family are viking themselves, literally.

Red gene is recessive. Also, red hair often darkens with age, speaking from experience. I also had bright red hair as a child, but now it's more brown-ish, like a very old amber.
