Arguably one of the most popular and recognizable characters in the Transformers franchise, he has gone on to cause trouble for the Autobots in several, television, comic book and film iterations, and has been made into countless action figures. Originally seen as too frightening by Hasbro, this character soon came to play a large role in making Transformers the phenomenon that it became in the 1980s. This is despite transforming into a Walther P38 handgun, a controversial alternate mode that continues to raise eyebrows. Cheesy Ninja475 Prime was actually a slightly, as in they got rid of the classic looks in the origin story and erased the dinobots as we knew them and made them all into a different type of decepticon, continuation of the War/Fall of Cybertron story. I'm still super pissed they erased Grimlock's seeming sacrifice from the games.

Typical WatchMojo, typical errors: 1. The quote at the start is wrong, the line in the movie is "One shall STAND (not rise), one shall fall". 2. Megatron made his debut in the 1984 Marvel comics series published in May, not in the animated series which premiered in September 1984. 3. Megatron really didn't have mental heath problems, that was Galvatron. 4. The Autobots went in search of energy so they could use it to overpower the Decepticons and win the war, not to re-energise Cybertron.

You were barely in the Bay movies, and in all of them your design was barely distinguishable from the other decepticons. Personally I think you looked and did your best handiwork in Transformers Prime. The way you threw Starscream out of your ranks in season 1 and absolutely decimated the Autobot forces in Season 2 were some of your most glorious moments. If you are displeased, then you should be displeased with that pathetic, idiotic sack of flesh known as Michael Bay. The best back story so far for Megatron is the comic book version that transforms him into a dark Spartacus. Working in the energon mines, at the behest of the Primes, Megatron engineers a slave revolt that frees the miners. However instead of leading his people to a promised land, Megatron forces his people to compete in brutal gladiator stylized combat. His methods ensure that not only the strongest survive but that he will have an army that ensures he will never be made a slave again.

I have to say, for how long he's been around, megatron is probably one of the most consistently voice acted villains in TV history. Frank Welker has voiced him in something like 80% of all his appearances, even in robot chicken skits and the video games. The only really notable exception is the live action movies (to which he still voices half of the decepticons, including galvatron and soundwave, which are two other staples of his)

I like the origin that they introduced in Transformers Prime, which was Megatron was a champion cybertronian gladiator in the "Pits of Caon", naming himself Megtronous (and Megatron for short) after the 13 original primes.

Best Megatron origin story in my opinion was IDW's Megatron origins series. Were he started off as miner on Kaon. The entire transition of why the decepticons became who they are was done really well.

Megatron didn't have mental problems. I came here for his origin story and wasn't satisfied because YOU DIDNT TELL THE ORIGIN STORY. lol! I love Megatron's design and everything about him in the show: Transformers Prime. The show is great. There, it explains his origion, somewhat. He was a strong fighter, the strongest and adopted the name Megatronous. He was said to be friends with Orion Pax (Optimus Prime's name in the past)...something like that.

+thelilAriMermaid He was severely deranged by the third season of the original (1984) series; due to years of consuming an unstable fuel source (sort-of like how lead-poisoning can make you go crazy).So much so, that even his most devoted follower (his second-in-command, Cyclonus ) eventually realized that Galvatron was no longer fit to lead; and had him institutionalized on a mental-asylum planet (easily the most disturbing episode of the entire first series).

+Then00bhunt3r Prime was only part of a revamped continuity which also encompasses War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron, set out in 2010 to govern all non-Bay Transformers properties going forward. In it Megatron does indeed start out as a miner, then underground gladiator, and so forth. In the modern continuity it was the Decepticons who rebelled against the immutable Autobot caste system. Megatron even referred to The Great Decepticon Uprising at the end of Beast Hunters when he quit.

I really like both Frank Welker's and Hugo Weaving's versions of Megatron, but I think that Corey Burton's Megatron is also really good. Corey Burton voiced Megatron in Transformers Animated(I know this show wasn't the best but it had some good things in it).

I used to wonder why Megatron's fusion cannon had no effect on Prime during their first meeting. It makes sense now, Prime was battle hardened and Megatron's weapon wasn't tuned to pierce the new Autobot armor. He and the other Deceptions obviously adjusted their weapons to compensate.

One thing that struck me when watching Prime and rewatching the original show, I felt like both Cullen and Welker had really improved their performances over the years. I think the post-production effects applied to the voices are also less pronounced in "Prime" as well, so more of the performance comes through.

Yeah, something like that. I generally tend to like the Dreamwave and IDW comics interpretations which have him as a gladiator, and then alternatively an energon miner turned gladiator who becomes a political extremist in a Cybertron whose Autobot leadership is growing increasingly corrupt. It brings a touch of real world politics to the Transformers story and really makes Megatron interesting because instead of just being "evil," he thinks he's fighting corruption by using extremist methods.

Never truly realized how bizarre it was that Megatron transformed...into a gun. And not just a gun - but a handgun for the other Decepticons to use...Fro what I've seen, Megatron is most usually the same size as, to larger than his Decepticon minions. The idea that he can compact into a weapon for them to use is...odd.

In the books I read it said Megatron was originally a gladiator with no real name until he adopted the name Megatronus from another famous transformer before it being changed to Megatron. Which version is canon? Also in what I read Orion Pac and Megatron started a group together to try to change things on Cybertron before they became Optimus and Megatron.

Optimus and Megatron were both against the corruption rampant in Cybertron's class system, but when Megatron turned to a violent revolution Optimus split ways with him and when the war began Optimus joined the Autobot military becoming a war hero. +Robert Chambers Agreed. He should be all about firepower and more firepower. In robot mode, his fusion cannon should already be way the hell more powerful than other Transformers' guns. His alternate mode should be an even bigger cannon so powerful it could atomize a small town. They sort of got it right with Galvatron, though the orange and purple looked goofy. Megatron should be silver and black.

So I went back and watched this video again and noticed something peculiar. When Optimus Prime first appears after being built from the remains of Orion Pax, Megatron shoots an energy blast at him, and it doesn't phase him. In other episodes, it would've incapacitated him somehow. I just found that rather odd, and it only adds to the glaring inconsistencies of the G1 cartoon.

The most complex and interesting origin for Megatron, is IDW's 4 issue Spotlight Megatron Origin. He started out as a worker on a mining colony moon. Jobs were becoming automated, and the corrupt government was decommissioning the workers. He was arrested for protesting. He became a revolutionary, and ultimately a tyrant. His good intentions were warped along the way.

Actually, Prime was blowing holes in Decepticons as well. I think the intention was to kill off some characters to make way for the new ones after the movie, especially the Decepticons that became Cyclonus and the Sweeps.

That's because Hasbro didn't want any characters killed off in the TV series, since it was essentially created to advertise their toys. The movie introduced new characters, hence new toys, so Hasbro no longer felt the older characters needed to be kept around!

Megatron was ACTUALLY built by the Constructicons millions of years ago on Cybertron after the Aerialbots went back in time to help make sure Orion Pax becomes Optimus Prime.

Actually the entire flashback sequence in Five Faces Of Darkness takes place prior to the events of War Dawn. But yeah, the Constructicons originally weren't evil. They were just a group of Decepticon scientists who created Megatron. And Megatron then took control of the Decepticon empire, brainwashed his creators into following him, and re-started the war with the Autobots and in the process was indirectly responsible for the creation of Optimus Prime.

I don't think so. I grew up with the Beast Wars Megatron. Personally despite the Bay movies destruction to the name I still really LOVED the design of Megatron. Which was overshadows by the Prime cartoon's. That being said I think all of him is AWESOME!

Megatron is strong because he was first a jedi then became a Sith Lord Darth Vader, and tru multiple repairs he became a gigantic robot who is now known as Megatron.
