It doesn't really make sense, she should look the same as in the original movie since she can't age and this movie is a prequel. But the producers decided not to use visual effects on the actress's face.

@@Threeleebird But the Esther character has dwarfism and is actually a 33 year old woman, the character didn't age, I think you got it wrong because it's supposed to be that she cannot grow any bigger and taller than the height of a nine year old. But this is a prequel movie, so it's in her past and it's not recent so it makes sense because she just might have not perfected her make-up and disguise skills yet. There, I tried making what the commenter said more clearer and detailed.

The twist in the prequel is based on a true story. An adult con artist in France impersonated a lost kid named Nicolas Barclay, and when he was caught, he and the PI that exposed him came out and said they believed Nicholas was murdered by his own family, specifically his brother, and that they were subtlety helping him cover his lies.

was it the older brother or the uncle? cause some reports say his uncle who had anger issues began tutoring nicolas who was a bit mentally disabled and him not understanding made the uncle go crazy and kill him and the family helped cover it up cause they considered him a nuisance anyways

I wish OG Orphan kept part of the original script. The fact she kill another girl at the Orphanage name Yolanda who the family was going to adopt. Her reading about sex from a Cosmopolitan out loud to Max at the Grocery. Her actually killing Danny in the hospital. When that one Estonian Doctor goes into deeper detail about her aside from her being 33 like her being rape by her dad and him telling her she will never be a woman and killing him and his new lover, then selling her body to dirty pedobears for sex. All of these should never been left out.
@trayclancy

Yooo I had no idea all that was originally in the script wtf. That would have made the movie way crazier. I think adding the stuff with Esther’s dad would have given more context on why she is the way she is which would have been nice

@@trayclancy I don't know why the writers and director left those important details out. Would of given the movie better context. here's part of the OG script. The original Orphan is based on a true story, and not terribly loosely either. I actually remember the news story of the family who adapted a child who turned out to be insane and later finds out the kid was actually an adult who had some condition making them small and young looking and posed as child to get adopted. It was one of the craziest news stores I’ve ever heard, no doubt why they immediately started production on a movie

@@Rebelheart1985 No not that girl at all, maybe a little I guess idk. But the one that Orphan is based off of is a story of Barbora Skrlova, a 33 year old woman who had dwarfism, and has apparently committed child abuse or something. So she was on the run from the police and went to a family and disguised herself as a 13 year old boy so they adopted her I think. But it's definitely not Natalia Grace since there would be very little relation between a true story and a movie.

The first Orphan movie is a fascinating watch, but honestly I think I also prefer the prequel because it leans into the absurdity and actually makes you root for Esther/Lena. I wouldn’t mind seeing another movie or even a mini-series about the various fucked up families Esther cons her way into and eventually kills. She’s really interesting as a protagonist.

The best thing the film has is the script. What Esther does to the family is brilliant. The movie also has several sub-plots that work very well in the movie and add some complexity to the whole thing. The sub-plots never feel like too much, because they are very subtly put in there. You keep asking ‘why wiuld Ester do that?’ As if she isn’t…you know….insane. She’s a killer with a record so yes, hiding as a minor in someone’s home is a good way to hide. And many serial killers keep trophys of their past crimes, seems dumb but there’s that whole insane part..so. As a woman in an psych ward who physically resembles a child I am sure she’s met her share a pedos who were happy to either use her or give into her advances and since it seems like she didn’t have much of a normal childhood even while being an actual child, her skewed world view of how men might respond of she simply gets mom out the way would make sense to a twisted mind like hers. Yeah the character is 30, but how much normalcy has she had in 30 years. Also they did actually use camera tricks to make the actress look younger in the prequel. They did it with Practical effects over CGI, like they did in LoTR with the Hobbits vs normal size humans. The actress isn’t as short as they made her look in the prequel. I mean her face still looked older, but height she isn’t like that short.

I love the OG Orphan film and think that it is some of the best in the horror genre I have ever seen. But this prequel is something I don't really appreciate. In the first movie, when she is turning the lights of her paintings on and off and showing the house in flames, it made me love the fact that they were all innocent and helpless against her and her killing the children within that previous family was also crazy. I honestly don't dig the twist of this next installment and prefer the implications of how she dealt with the previous family the OG Oprhan film already gave to us. But other than that man, this was such a great review of them and I hope to see more content! 💯

this movie sounds extremely believable, the twist part, because i remember seeing about a chick thats like 25 30 but is in a 9 year old's body and it's so weird because as you said, "nothing could hint at her not actually being a kid". like she talks like a kid, looks like a kid, her voice, inflexions, everything. just WHAT SHE SAYS is "adult-like" much like the kid in this movie. at least from what im getting. that condition is fucking horrible btw, because one of 2 things happen: you either are never able to truly connect to someone, specially on a romantic level, because it's fucking weird, OR whoever ends up with you is permanently labeled a pedophile because they're essentially dating a of age kid

I wanted more sequel for the [The Orphan]...but because of the age of that 1st actress, Isabelle, it might be too late.

Okay people here saying it's inspired by a russian case, or a case in Norway. It's none of this, it's based on a Czech media news story (I am from Czechia) about a woman named Barbora Skrlová, happened in May of 2007. I was kid back then but vividly remember the news, you can even check it's mentioned in wiki. She was like around 30 or so and belonged to some cult along with her 'adoptive mom'.
