Chase, to start off this is great. I love the Raw vids, they give me a good nugget to think about. I'll tell you this, I am a creative by heart but still supporting the family with a regular 9-5. The message in here is exactly the same. I've had immense success in my job by following this mantra. It's not the same activities, but same ideas. In general, I do the following: 1. Stay close to interesting people who do good work 2. Engage in 1x1 sessions with VP's and the like to find out what they do, how they got here, why they love their job (or not) 3. Talk to people who don't have a clue what I do. Get the conversation going with sales when you're in services, marketing with engineering. Cross-pollinate yourself and soon enough, you find yourself working with these people and they know who you are already and want to collaborate with you instead of building barriers 4. Find time to invest in yourself. Read blogs, tech posts, newsletters. Comment. Engage! Study a topic or take some new training that will help you. (art of negotiation, how to win with positivity, creative problem-solving...) 5. Always be responsive. Show up, participate, be reliable. People love it, even if you're so busy, that you just reply, say I'm working on it, then do it. Provide an accurate timeline to get the work done, and hit that deadline. Keep up the great work. Your journey evolves. If you think that you'll just take pictures, paint, create music all your life, you're wrong. You'll promote, engage, market, attend shows, teach others, and give back. It's what makes you successful, being that well-rounded human.

Amazing advice, exactly what Chase was talking about happened to my instagram account! Grew my engagement over half a year (to around 400 likes/10 comments) and then I got lazy and stopped developing/contributing consistently. When I had gotten back to posting regularly it I felt like the new content I was putting up was so much better than before and yet I was getting 1/3 the engagement. Really regret taking my foot off the gas, stay hungry people - put in the work and the results will come in time!

Thanks, Chase. 100%. I've been a Sr. Copywriter for close to 10 years now, working with some of the best, most respected brands on the planet and... You've been working on your photography craft for decades I presume and Creative Live etc. marketing stuff for years and years. The illusion of success tomorrow is a waste of time. Gotto sign up for the long run or not at all. Thanks bro, keep inspiring, creating and sharing dem nuggets :)

I've had this feeling, intuition, about this exact idea for a little while now and it's so, so nice to see someone like you who's gone through and still on top of the game confirm it. My KZbin, 500px, Flickr, and Instagram are nothing if I don't also engage with my community and also other creators. It's really hard when you're traveling like me, but I think engaging with other creators is just as important as engaging with your audience. The community is a two way street.

One of the most succinct and actionable formulas for success (not a guarantee). I'd suggest that the second 50% is likely going to at least feel like 75-90% of the work, because that first creative part is likely the passion and the second half is the huddle that makes it pay (whether literally or figuratively). For me of course the first 98% is getting started, then 1% of doing/finishing it, and the last 1% of hustle.

The most important thing you suggested was participation. Most people don't want to market their channels and join the community. They're not willing to build up a community and we all know that takes time. Very few will catch a lucky break and most that do don't have a loyal fan base

Awesome RAW episode. I got a question for you Chase. how to concentrate on only one thing? I love so many things to do to the point I can't stop my self from jumping back and forth between them every single day. Honestly I learned a lot in each subject but you got to do something consistently to make a living out of it and this is something I can't achieve it yet because my lists of interest is: Photography, filmmaking, graphic design, web development, mobile development and the list goes on and on.... Hit me hard Chase! Hit me hard! I love to hear the truth behind this uncertainty because I can't pick one thing!
@liontarolikos8 жыл бұрын
John Jayson Abandoning one passion for another doesn't really make sense, in my opinion. Especially in the creative field. The best thing you can do is figure out how all these things can work together. Photography, videography, graphic design, etc... they don't have to be separate things but pieces of the puzzle that together create something truly yours and truly unique. Go for it.
@PureboilersUk7 жыл бұрын
John, you risk spreading yourself too thinly. Someone mention the 70/20/10 principle, when you split your time using that method, 70% on the main thing, 20% on the secondary thing and 10% on the 'new' or 'higher risk' thing.

Great insight for sure. It's tricky to get your work out there. I've been working for years and wondering what I'm missing. I've finally started submitting my work to galleries and festivals. Going to events and getting together with others and all of this I've noticed has pushed things forward. The hardest thing I find is how to get the right audience to be engaged. But I think I have a plan for that. Now I have to figure out how to turn engagement into a source of revenue. IE gallery visits and website hits into sales. That's where I'm stuck.

Fabulous Video, I have been dabbling in the past couple of years but i'm getting myself into gear this week and iv changed my mindset. Its my leave time from my job and iv been spending it wisely working on my website and making it smarter and more presentable. How do you find the 25th hour in the day? The last few nights. Iv been involved so much in my progress that i skipped sleeping altogether on Tuesday night, then had 4 hours Wednesday and last night i didn't want to stop but wanting progress to be sustainable so last night i went to bed at responsible time but didn't wait for the 7am alarm i got up after 5 hours in bed was not asleep but was telling myself your idea (spend 8 hours in bed even if its just lying there but that was frustrating as my head kept progressing with inspirational ideas to put into practice. Im casting the videos and having breaks for 15 min every hour and a half. but even then im doing house stuff. Thanks Steven.

Wonderful video that really explains this concept well. It is funny to me when I minutely talk about the creative and the work that it takes. The work daily over a long stretch of time to gain trust which then gains traction. Far too many people think that there is a secret to success, luck (think lottery) or that somebody had more money than them to push. Well, in my humble opinion (just like it is when I cook or make my BBQ) if your heart is not in it - no amount of anything is going to make you 'the next big thing' Does it get frustrating? The reason it gets frustrating to me is KNOWING that people are falling for the gimmicks and I'm like - "I"M RIGHT HERE!!" Otherwise it's head down and keep humping. Long way around the barn to say thanks for your content I reckon...

Finally, someone speaking about the shit no one wants to talk about. You think that all the famous photographers just got famous because they took a good shot? No way! They put in the work to make themselves known. Personally, I'd rather be a 7/10 photographer and a 10/10 businessman than the other way around, just so I can keep doing what I do and get paid for it.

I have been thinking about this for my own business and I have experienced what you talking about. Right now I'm questioning wether it is worth the time to build my own audience in social media. After all my goal is to bring income to my business and I just partnered with a huge company that put my product in the hands of thousands of people. So I guess the question is if you build your own thing or team up with others or both. I don't really know the answer yet but what do you guys think?

I love the fact others are talking about this Chase, people are like so if i do the work now that it? I'm like no, you will get returns but then tomorrow and the next day really hinges on what you did/do yesterday and today. Although the same can be said about investing money into the business, you will have that one person ask but why should i spend $1000 on this course? Notice first he does not say invest $1000 into making his business better? The way i look at investing money is that i expect a 10x to 100x over the life time of the business. For example if you spend a $1 then i expect over the course of the life time of the business to make $10 to $100 from that training.
