This is an industry wide issue. I've been seeing this sort of shoddy work or lack of trained techs who have no clue as to what they are supposed to be doing or how to do it properly. It's sad to see it, but it doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. I hope more people embrace the "big picture " mentality.

I feel ya Chris. Had to change a compressor out on a very popular restaurant Friday. When I had condemned the compressor all panels were in place on all units including make up air units. When I came back on Friday they had just had maintenance done found 3 of their make up air units had panels off and customer was complaining of high humidity. Took pictures and told manager. My service manager had me get in touch with facilities manager and I think we are going to pick up the maintenance on 3 of their stores in my area. Thanks for another great video.

Thanks for the duct detector tip, no need to annoy the customer's with calling the alarm company. We service one building that if 1 smoke looses power the alarm system shuts all 15 RTU's down, so annoying with a trouble alarm. This makes everything an emergency.

I like to call techs who do shoddy work: “trunk slammers”. They come in, do “work” on the unit, and are already slamming their trunks and giving the bill as fast as they came. They usually lowball contracts so they can get more business through new customers.

I was just at an event I volunteer with over the weekend and the hotel had a massively negative air balance. Like, doors wouldn't even close all the way negative. Then they wondered why it got hot inside when it broke 90 outside. Maybe because of all the hot air being drawn in everywhere? Lol. I'm going to see if we can suggest management have a technician take a look at the air balance first. (They just did a big renovation of their restaurant and kitchen with new exhaust fans too and I'm betting didn't get an air balance afterwards.)

Great video, thank you. Interesting about the follow-up emails. I am a translator-proofreader, when someone does really sloppy work, like they obviously did not even try to do a good job, I write down some of their aggregious mistakes, send in my report, and ask for more money (because it took me more time to review a bad translator than a good one). TBH I prefer the good ones even if it means less money for me.

1:29 - I'm SHOCKED that actual filters were in place, instead of that bulk cut-to-fit frameless crap some companies use... 1:42 - 🤦♂OMFG. This is ridiculous... Hopefully after running around putting out the Other Company's "fires," they'll learn it's better to come to you from the beginning. They can either call you first, or call you last. Calling you first is obviously the cheaper long-term solution, and with some common sense (haha) they'll actually end up saving money. If I were a representative at these restaurants, I'd welcome all your Emails - and have a file folder for every location with hard-copy printouts. Not only are you generating a paper trail of evidence for the franchise if they decide to sever the contract with the PM Hacks (giving them proof that they aren't worth the expenditure), but you're keeping the suits in the office informed of the condition of their store's equipment - and ideally they'd be having issues corrected before they become catastrophic.

Apart from some lack of training more and more people just don't have pride in their work. The "works good enough" mentality is taking over basically over every industry - mostly due to "the lowest bidder wins" and people losing the "big picture" mentality.

In my years in the trade (40plus), I had what I think is an advantage. I worked as maintenance/HVACR at a hotel when I started out and then at a college. So I worked on all the equipment and got to “know it”. And I didn’t have to rush to just band aid a fix and get it running, then rush on to the next call. I could do a thorough PM on what ever I was working on and could schedule a day or several days to do filters, clean coils, clean heating side stuff, etc. I took pride in my work. I honestly would not like doing service work and spending time in a service van. But that’s me. Others may love it. One has to do what works for one’s self and what makes them happy.

A few years ago I went for an maintenance on many machines . except one that was to a renting local and I just tok a look ai it ! ! ! ! all filters smashed into the evap., totally blocked with dirt, the strap was spinning on the pullies I replaced the filters with used one I replaced in another machine, re-tight the strap and had a talk with the people renting the local. . . They assured me that the maintenance was done by the head office in Trois -Rivières. . ! ! ! I told him that no maintenance was made on their machine fos some years. .. . . So since the building maintenance was a whole day affair, , twice a year I replace their jammed filters with used ones and that's it when the strap broke. . I told the owner of the place, that they did no maintenance on " their' machine , but it belongs to him, , ,mayby advice seriously the business of their oblications. .

Combination of known issues (indoor motor mounts etc) and lack of training, care, or both. Best practices for belts & motors is kind of essential to keep callbacks etc to a minimum. If the blower isn't blowing, then it doesn't matter what the refrigerant levels are or if the condenser has a hole or any of that. Then the air balance issues. I know of a place that makes amazing Italian food and you literally cannot open the entryway door because they have several flat tops and friers and stuff with exhausts but no make up air or anything aside from the one main AC for the dining room & one for the kitchen/office/order pickup area. Just need people to care about what and how they do things - seems simple but then you find stuff like you did on this location.

Damper settings versus fan speed If you desire a fixed volume of outdoor air the low fan speed needs more damper opening because there is less available pressure drop between the return and the outside air damper to cause outdoor air to enter the return air stream. High speed needs less damper opening because the volume of outside air required is the same, but the pressure across the economizer outside air damper is increased with a higher blower speed

I do appreciate your professionalism. That’s a 5623M serial so it was built In Stuttgart Arkansas that’s the 56 year 23 month M Dec. that belt is 6 months old maybe? So why did it fail? Could be defective belt or serious mis alignment or motor sheave turned open? Balance contractors love to spin the motor sheave open to get to +/- 10%. Of specified CFM. That places enormous stress on the drive belt and creates early fatigue and failure. If you are seeing repeat belt failures check those two conditions and replace sheaves to correct drive kit for proper RPM at design CFM and actual static.

By the way, regarding the mess with choosing the cheapest performer... Chris, the point is - you and many people who do real work can never accept the thinking style of bureaucrats in an office. Unfortunately, the main goals of bureaucracy are nutrition and breeding. Nutrition is salary, breeding is staff growth. The bureaucrat never thinks about the issue as part of the whole; for this he has a boss, and boss is busy with breeding (in various senses). Is this a button? Yes. Is it sewn on? Yes. And the fact that it is sewn onto the butt instead of a sleeve is no longer his concern. In the report the button is sewn on. Full stop. It helps me personally to consider them mindless aliens and not expect reasonable actions from them. And, sooner or later, the company with the largest number of such parasites will die.
