Hearing Atkins at the end saying the PIRA's actions are not politically motivated is beyond stupid. We know the British Government is deceitful but here he its not contempt to the Irish intelligence but to his own people, does he think English people are that dumb and gullible. Whatever you think of Irish Republicanism its clearly motivated by political and more importantly nationalistic ideals.

21:50 "Can the Provos be beaten? Yes!" And yet I did two tours in Northern Ireland, first in 1988 the next in 1994 that lasted until the summer of 1997. I never underestimated the IRA or any of the paramilitary groups from both sides of the divide. A lot of these men and women were very capable, very well organised, had military training and didn't need expensive scopes or SAM missiles, a pistol was just as effective, and AK even more so. And don't forget, the British Army went into Ulster to protect the Catholics from the violence and death dealt by protestants with the RUC looking on. Just a shame those same protectors were eventually used against Catholics. Lastly, this was a war. It wasn't a civil disturbance or internal conflict. It was war. I deployed a few weeks after the Corporal Killings. I was s hitting bricks going. Six long and tiring months, virtually every day or week an incident. But I have to say, the best time of my life, doing a job that I loved, that was dangerous and exciting.

The subtlety of the Glover memo is missed in all of this, although Atkins alludes to it in his interview, it was part of an internal British security forces turf war. Remember, it was Glover himself who leaked the document, he drew it up with the express intention of leaking it. In 1979 the RUC was being put in the forefront of the campaign to contain the Provos, and the Army were very unhappy about this. Northern Ireland was the last operational campaign for them, the Empire was gone and they had nowhere else left to play their games. A lot of the Glover report was alarmist, the Provos never got these high-tech sniper scopes, they never got the SAMs. The whole purpose was to get the new Tory government to give back control to the Army, they played it heavy with Margaret Thatcher when she flew in after Warrenpoint. In the end she held firm and the RUC retained primacy and the Army looked a bit silly after it all. And let's not forget the propaganda that the Sinn Fein side was putting out. Morale in the prisons in 1979 was at absolute rock bottom, there was talk of calling off the blanket protest, this was two years before the hunger strike and the campaign was going nowhere. Oh, and Father Wilson was talking sheet when he claimed that Gerry Adams was engaged in peaceful protests in 1970, he might have fooled the ITV team, the rest of us know better.

Considering this was aired in 1979 and the war carried on for another 16 years after this and probably would have carried on for years afterwards as well the british soldiers were right about the IRA being resilient and that they would carry on fighting for years if needed too. Shame they werent listened too earlier. The british army were originslly supposed to have been sent to Ireland to help the catholics that were being persecuted but instead fought against them. Thats what escalated the troubles in Northern Ireland

But that was no ordinary ASU, allegedly it was made up of the elite soldiers of the Ira from chief of staff , northern command men, escapees, former blanketmen,. Unheard of before for all these men, ( who I know by name ) btw, to tie in together to carry out an operation. If the Brits or peelers we’re aware or managed to arrest this asu, then it wudda been 1 hell of a scalp for them, but alas , it was not to be !!!! For one night only, as the saying goes lol !!!!!

The first question that should be asked is why are there men with English accents on the island of Ireland determining who and who isn't a terrorist, invading a land that is not your own is terrorism, not the people.who are fighting against the invaders
@imixmuan9081
@imixmuan9081 Жыл бұрын
Answer to first question: Not everyone with an Irish accent is a) a Catholic b) wants to be unified with the Republic of Ireland. Just as not everyone with an English accent are English. My family: Irish, Catholic, from the north mostly, fiercely loyal to Crown. Why? I have no idea, but probably because they were mostly military, Royal Navy and Army, and moved to England in 1900. They had no time for Home Rule, Republicans, or Republicanism. One great uncle of mine was a tee-tolling, vegetarian IRA gun runner in the war of Independence and civil war, but the rest...fought for the Crown. Answer to second question: A terrorist is someone who uses violence to achieve a political goal and is not a uniformed soldier of a recognized nation state. The nation state here is defined as the agent that exercises the legitimate expression of violence within a given geographic area. Answer to third question, or statement: Northern Ireland is, and was a part of the United Kingdom since 1922, so, there was no invasion. Also, why are we even discussing this? The IRA gave up the use of violence in 1998 with the Good Friday agreement, and Brexit will almost certainly lead to unification of Ulster and the Republic in....I'd say no more than a decade. So....the IRA didn't win the war, but won the peace, and the Brits, like always, won the war and lost the peace. Bloody hilarious, if you stop think about it.

Looking back, the bankrupt mentality of the British political leadership was appalling. They actually couldn’t see that the IRA campaign was in any way politically driven. Unbelievable for, by the sound of their accents, an expensively educated cohort of people. As the former Cork IRA Commander, Tom Barry commented in the 1920’s, when discussing the morality of armed resistance, ‘Down they (The British) went down into the mire and down we went after them’ The 1970’s Irish fight back was needed at the time in my opinion, but as the late QE2 said, “Everyone Wishes that things had been done differently or not at all!” That I think sums up my thinking on this. A terrible situation driven by history and fuelled by contemporary events. Throughly regrettable!
