For me what it mean is that as an individual we, all the time, look for something that will satisfy our desire(not what we need but only desire, in all aspect), and it seemed to us that our present situation is the worst because we as humans we do not have contentment that we always thought that it is better on the other side, so we wanted to go the other way that we think is better and not minding the struggles that is awaiting, that is why the teacher said "U r in the other side", because he knows which side is better.

I agree. But I think he uses the term in a metaphorical way than literal. Yes Buddha dhamma has no relation to Vedas or Hinduism. Annatta is a one of many that stands out against Veda/Hinduism.
