First off--no need to "apologize" for talking "too much" since I have never had a class worth a crap where I didn't have an instructor verbally explain stuff--and your explanations are always gold, so please don't feel you need to be brief. Rock On and Stay Well. Great lesson by the way.

Never thought of it that way. So the picking direction is basically the opposite of the “pitch direction” from the current note to the next. (If the pitch is going up, it’s a downstroke; if the pitch is going down, it’s an upstroke.)

When I think "ear training" I think chord recognition, chord direction, and the identification of the next chord within the song so that I can play intuitively. This is my goal. I want to know enough about a sound that I can map its placement within the song as a song writer intended without having a progression simply memorized. I appreciate that harmonic frequency of a note matters in an arpeggio. However; the manifestation of such would be exhibited in the broader context of a musician flowing from one chord to the next. "With all this being said".....I appreciate the title reference..."the other side of ear training". Of course this is asking a lot and I recognize it as being upper level musicianship but ya know, "it's better to know what you don't know than not know what you don't know".

Hey, dude! I’m on the road in my RV and I’m completely lost. Do you have a sat Nav I can borrow? No dude, but that up there is the pole star, work out if you’re going north or south. Then you won’t need satnav. Oh! That’s truly mind expanding! For me, a tone deaf fool, this has just suddenly opened up a door I’ve been trying to open... the pick is intuitive after 40 years of being a crap guitarist... my ear is not... This is a never lost moment for me. Thank you so much, Ian x

Good video man. I have been wanting to ask you...why the "stich method"? I cant say that I myself know the direction of the pick but I do visualize it, and usually am correct...kind of a "Musical Context clues". If we understand the timbre of each string then we can deduce which string might be next and so on. GREAT STUFF.

I learned the McReynolds roll or crosspicking on Mandolin and apply to guitar. It's like bluegrass banjo applied to Mandolin applied to guitar.
@keithchilvers7434
@keithchilvers7434 3 жыл бұрын
I think the origins of the crosspicking style go back to the 1920's virtuoso tenor banjo players in vaudeville. George Shuffler adapted it for guitar and Jessie McReynolds for mandolin. In an interview George Shuffler said he developed it to fill out the Stanley Brother's sound when times were tough in the 50s and they couldn't afford to employ any more musicians - out of necessity some good came.

Watch videos of Doc Watson play. When flatpicking, he almost exclusively alternate picks in an down up motion. Downs on the down beat, up on the up beat, using rest strokes. Most powerhouse flatpicking bluegrass guitarists do this. Watch Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Clarence White, David Grier, or even the newer generation like Billy Strings or Molly Tuttle. They all alternate pick. This up/down technique may be exclusive to the bluegrass world though. I don't see blues or rock players do this. Love your videos Stitch.
@keithchilvers7434
@keithchilvers7434 3 жыл бұрын
These players you mention all have different techniques. Certainly Doc Watson almost exclusively used alternate picking and he picked from the elbow moving his entire forearm. By contrast Norman Blake and others pick from the wrist (usually with the pinkie anchored on the pick guard) and use a variety of techniques including a great deal of cross-picking as well as alternate picking. I have watched teaching videos by Norman Blake where he explains these various picking styles.

@@keithchilvers7434 I thought pinky … sometimes I try to work in a down pick down stroke sort of flick brush the high-pitched bottom strings with the pinky and his next door neighbor finger of the picking hand. for years I had to have a pick then I fell in love with those teardrop shaped picks … then I just didn't use picks anymore sometimes you can really do them both ways at the same time with different fingers and thumb with the direction respective to where everything is. He isn't playing a whole lot here. Wish I had time to check out everybody he just mentioned. Then you got pull-offs with the fingering hand and those Rock scrapes picks are good for those. Gotta be lose as a goose to do those tapped out triplets. Gotta be loose let go of the mistakes one might make at first … The direction comes natural eventually don't even have to think about this the music gets alot faster … loosen up and even use your knuckles a little bit as one practices. Wear gloves when you do other things cause those strings don't feel good across an abrasion on ones hand's like broken fingernails are the worst … ⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️🏞️⛰️ 🔮🔮💭🏜️🌵🧀🍋🐤💭🧥💭🧥🧥🧥💭💭 🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭💭💭🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥💭 🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭💭🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥 💭🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭💭🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥 💭🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭🧥🧥🧥🧥🧥💭💭 🔮🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭💭🧥🧥🧥💭🧥💭 🔮🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭💭💭🧥💭💭💭💭 💭💭🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭💭🧥🧥🧥💭💭💭 💭🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭🧥💭🧥💭🧥💭💭 💭💭🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭😎🧥👀🧥😎💭💭 💭🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭🤭😶🤭😶🤭😶🤭💭 💭🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭🤭🤭😶🤭😶🤭🍦💭 💭💭🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭😶😶😶😶😶💭💭 💭💭🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭💭🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭 💭💭💭🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭 💭💭💭💭🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭 💭💭💭🧥🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🧥💭💭💭💭💭 💭💭🧥🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🧥💭💭💭💭 💭💭💭🧥🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🔮🧥💭💭💭💭💭 💭💭💭💭💭🔮🔮🔮🔮💭💭💭💭💭💭💭 💭💭💭💭💭 🔮🕴️🔮 💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭 💭💭💭💭💭👇💭👇💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭 💭💭🌵💭💭🤲💭🤲💭💭💭🌵💭💭💭💭 💭💭💭💭🤟🤲💭🤲🤙💭💭🏜️💭💭💭💭 🌵💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭🕳️🌵 🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️💭💭💭💭💭💭💭 💭🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️💭 🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️💭💭💭🕳️💭💭💭🕳️💭🕳️ 🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️💭 🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️💭💭💭🕳️💭💭💭🕳️💭💭 🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️💭💭 💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭💭 💭🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️💭 🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️💭💭💭🕳️💭💭💭🕳️💭🕳️ 🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️💭 🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️💭💭💭🕳️💭💭💭🕳️💭💭 🕳️💭🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️🕳️🕳️💭🕳️💭💭 🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️

This doesn't make sense to me...if you are doing alternate picking, hybrid picking or economy picking each one is different. Perhaps you mean the pitch of the sting going up or down, i.e. base treble? What am I missing? I absolutely love your lessons, but this one confused me, lol
