Great video as always Dom. You had a stunning day to experience this route and captured the beauty of Argyll and Bute perfectly. Nice to see some familiar places and I never knew that Dalmally had such a pretty station.

Great timing for this video to appear, I've just been booked to play a music festival on Iona so I'll be needing to take a train from Glasgow to Oban on the way there very soon! Can't wait to see it for myself

Great video and yet another line I want to explore. Thanks to watching your videos, I just got home from my own mini holiday. I went down to Glasgow stayed a couple of nights and did the Glasgow to Dumfries line passing though the beautiful Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway countryside. I will have to go back down and explore that area more, including doing the Stranraer railway when it reopens

Thank you for showing us what we missed, we had an eight day travel pass a few years ago but it was when ScotRail were operating a reduced timetable and several hours in Oban with a late return to Glasgow QS wasn't an option due to onward connections. We'll have to try again.

That’s definitely one I would love to try. I’ve previously driven up to Cainryan port, but Oban would be too far for me. So a train to Glasgow then that train to Oban would be perfect. And that Premier… building next to stations is similar the old Midland Hotels that were built to serve the rail passengers 😀
@176MarkW5 ай бұрын
Very nice! I've been to Oban before but accessed it via road, however the rail journey looks spectacular. Hope the Premier Inn was good (review video of your stay, by any chance??)
@kevanhubbard96735 ай бұрын
A way i use to like doing it was off to Tyndrum Upper and walk to Tyndrum Lower then the Oban line.Only works off the sleeping train from England which carries a day coach from Edinburgh to Fort William and maybe a few others as Oban/Malliag is the same train for much of the journey.
@paulharvey91495 ай бұрын
I almost hoped you were going via Dunblane and the bus to Callander and Killin - paralleling the original Caledonian Railway route to Oban, and rejoining the train at Crianlarich; or alternatively it could be cycled, though you might prefer going from north to south for the generally downhill gradient! In fact, you could even take the twice-daily bus from Oban to Fort William, that parallels the former Connel Ferry to Ballachulish branch - most of whose stations also remain in a variety of guises. Connel Ferry Bridge was of course built for the railway, then shared with road traffic for many years - and its not so many years since the railway deck of the bridge over Loch Creran was replaced by a road deck - the piers of this bridge still being original! So many possibilities, so little time.

Great video, many thanks Dom. The scenery is fantastic, but I do wish Scotrail would put some better rolling stock on their Oban and Mallaig services. I’m sure it would be worth it financially. Travelling the route in a Mk3 IC carriage would be a fantastic experience, rather than chugging along in a relatively noisy Class 156. Experience in other countries with mountainous scenery shows that if you provide good quality trains on scenic routes, more people will use them. Scotland has, IMHO, some of the best scenery in the World, so come on Scotrail, please improve your trains.
@WorldWide_Dom5 ай бұрын
Totally agree! There are many other types of newer rolling stock that would be great for this line. Here is hoping it happens sooner rather than later.

40+ years ago i did numerous 'All Line Rovers' in my youth. Now I might be wrong, but I am quite sure I caught a sleeper to Oban.
@WorldWide_Dom5 ай бұрын
I’m not aware of any sleeper services to Obama but may simply have been before my time. It’s a good idea though.
@jmobem53835 ай бұрын
Temporarily some years ago Fort William was inaccessible so for several weeks the sleeper service terminated and commenced in Edinburgh. Later it returned to Fort William.
@NCR53094 ай бұрын
The weekly sleeper was scrapped in September 1965. There was a trial undertaken in 2016, on 3 consecutive Friday evenings only, with a view to possible future reintroduction on a regular basis… truth is there was engineering works those weekends precluding Fort William! This had nothing to do with storm damage on the WCML which coincidently occurred around same time trial planned. Oban still features in discussions on future sleeper expansion..
