After the Ottoman's defeat the Serbian Lazar at the 1389 Battle of Kosovo, their new Sultan Bayezid I continued their expansion. The next few decades saw many turbulent changes, among which a war with the Timurid Empire to the east, a civil war between Bayezid's sons (the Ottoman Interregnum) and several besiegements of the illustrious city of Constantinople.

Bayezid’s collapse was probably that small window of opportunity for the Byzantines and Co. to launch a reconquest, but didn’t.

I mean, their numbers still seemed frail compared to the Ottomans even when the latters were fractured. I can't see how they could've done anything even then.

To do that Greeks should believe so. When you consider that Greeks in anatolia living under turkish rule for around 300 years it was quite impossible.

Hi i want to give some informations about the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid . Bayezid (Some of them called him thunderbold because of his speed) was an military genius he defeated crusaders, beyliks (turkish War lord) and Balkan kingdoms . Later at the battle agains Timur his own soldiers betrayed him . Maybe because of this and other factors he ended up dying in his enemys lands. After his death Bayezid's sons started a civil War which Mehmet (Çelebi - Pius) became the Sultan .

Why do you think the Ottomans were able to survive the defeat at Ankara against Timur but the Byzantines did not after Manzikert against Alp Arslan? One empire slowly died while the other went on to greater glory? Both battles are very similar, both Bayazid and Romanus were captured ignominiously.

Very good question. At this moment I do not know enough about the context of the Battle of Manzikert to give a concrete answer to it, unfortunately.

The Roman empire under the Komnenian Dynasty manage to recapture most of Asia Minor. The desicive blow was 1204... not 1071.

There does not seem to be a strong authority to take over whats left of Ottoman governance after Timur left. This means that Ottomans either established a very powerful mechanism of governance that survived despite it's head being cut off (much like what happened to Western Roman empire in it's later years) or that there was no alternative power to jump-take over, meaning Ottoman family was by now regarded as the true royal throughout this geography. You should also look into Ahi organizations, they are forms of guilds in urban centres mixed with religious mystic aspects. They were quite significant in the era after the Seljukids were destroyed by Mongols in day to day governance of urban centres in dark, uncertain times. Such entities might have played a role in this interregnum too.

@@CaptainHarlock-kv4zt *with the help of Crusaders'. According to agreement Crusaders will give back captured Seljuk cities to Byzantines in the exchange of food and logistics. With this way Seljuk capital Nicaea was captured by Crusaders and given to Byzantines with large parts of Western Anatolia. Continuous campaigns led to Seljuk instability and power vacuum in region. If Crusaders didn't help, there would be no Empire of ''Nicaea'' after 1204.

@ايجون تارجاريين So? British Empire weakened and lost most of her colonies after WW2 despite they won world war. Seljuks of Rum lost lots of manpower, money and internal stability because of invader crusader armies.
