Interesting video, even though as another commenter said, the subject of Vlad the Impaler has been discussed many times before, and yet there's still new information that surfaces, like how Vlad helped Matthias in various battles during his time in Hungary, as you talked about in the video. So if I may add some info on the subject myself (I won't talk about pronunciations as that was already addressed in another comment): - After Vlad's first reign, he fled to the Ottoman Empire and then went to Moldavia, as said in the video, and it is more likely that he stayed in Moldavia at the court of Bogdan II, his uncle. However, after Bogdan's assassination by Petru Aron in 1451, he and his cousin, the future Stephen the Great, fled to Transylvania where they asked for help from John Hunyadi and that's when Vlad got the task of defending Transylvania's borders. After he got the throne in 1456, he helped his cousin, Stephen, take the throne of Moldavia from Aron a year later in 1457. - Vlad didn't construct the Poenari castle, he renovated it with the "help" of the boyars that helped assassinate his father and older brother. - Interesting that you didn't mention his raids on the Saxons. After the death of Hunyadi, he helped Michael Szilagyi in his rebellion in Transylvania while also punishing the Saxons for supporting other pretenders to the Wallachian throne, namely Vlad the Monk and Dan III, but he failed to catch either of the pretenders. He will have other conflicts with the Saxons later because of this, until he defeated Dan III in 1460. - Regarding Vlad's army and his campaign south of the Danube in 1462. He possibly didn't split his forces during his raid. He marched his army following the Danube, however, his army was very fast, and possibly just like that of Stephen, it was fully mounted as well, with infantry travelling on horseback and dismounting before battle. After he got the throne in 1456 he actually created a small professional standing army of about 5000 or 6000 men which was made up of his curteni (courtiers) which were his knights with some of them likely fighting as light cavalry and the so called trabants who were German and Hungarian mercenaries from Transylvania, some of who as you mentioned in the video were armed with handguns and used cannons (culverins). - In 1462, Vlad also commanded a portion of the Hungarian Black Army at the siege of Chilia where he defeated his cousin. After Vlad was imprisoned, Stephen would eventually take Chilia. And that's all I wanted to share :)

Another king that ruled his country for three times at roughly the same time as Vlad III was Karl Knutson of Sweden of the Bonde family. He is not as well-known internationally as Vlad III, but for the Nordic countries he is an important, and very colourful, character.

Vlad is one of the great men of history who truly embody transcending virtues such as bravery, duty to your land and people, and fighting because it's right, no matter how the odds are stacked against you. He was in charge of a very small principality with a very small population, against the largest empire at the time, who could field 200-300 thousand strong armies like it was nothing. Against all odds he fought for his land and that makes him a great man. Skanderbeg from Albania is another good example.
@tinkmarshino3 жыл бұрын
@@bertchintus4103 Very true.. a little over the top at times.. But then war has a tendency to do that to people.. Good example Skanderbeg.. they should do something on him. Same basic time period though he lived to be an old man of 62 unlike Vlad's 46 years.. a good history of the area and the people would also be a good one.. But it would take at least an hour and a half just to hit the highlights.. Thanks Burt.. have a great weekend my brother.. Carry on!

@@tinkmarshino that's true, but the way I see it, a man who defends his land and people, can do no wrong. His "brutal vengeance" is justified and accepted. Have a good weekend my man! Peace!

@@bertchintus4103 Well Bert.. I see your point and I partly agree with you.. but the killing of women and children and old folk, especially in those days when they could harm no one, goes against my grain.. For clarifications or additions to what was said above, I recommend "Corpus draculianum" on youtube. The dramatic life of Vlad Tepes exposed in the chronicles of the time, his correspondence, the administrative documents from his period. All presented by professional historians, who, like Sherlock Holmes, try to bring Vlad to light, beyond legends and vicious propaganda.

From all the others videos I saw about him this is the most poorly informed one I saw. HistoryMarche did the best job of them all. Ottoman Turks don't win any of the battles when they invaded Wallachia, they just drop Radu there and the coward boyars defected to him, while Mehmed the II stated he can't defeat a man who is able to do such great things and who is able to do more. Vlad fled to Hungary as his throne was occupied by his brother and go to Mathias to ask for military help to reclaim his throne. Vlad is imprisoned because Mathias Corvinus don't wanted war with Ottoman is another theory, another one, is because the Saxon where angry at Vlad and wanted him dead so he imprison him to protect him, and the third one is the one told in the video that state about the secret alliance with Turks. The most plausible is the first theory, that Mathias wanted peace with Ottomans as he had other plans, he prove this when pope send him money to aid Vlad in the crusade against Ottomans, but he used the money on personal affairs. Around his death there are many theories, the most widely accepted one is that he is assassinated by his boyars as they fear him because they where the one who defected to his brothers, not that hie died on battlefield. This vide talk mostly about his cruelty and war, but they omitted to say about his administrative reforms that enriched the country, and one of the reasons that bring him in the fight with the Saxon from Transilvania, who where displeased that their mercantile monopol was cut off by him when he demanded that Wallachian merchants to benefit from the same rights or them to pay taxes when they use Wallachia in their trade with Ottomans as the Wallachians merchants do when they trade in Transilvania. They where displeased that they lost their rights so they support his rivals at throne, this is why he invade Transylvania and pillage their area. Also Saxon where the one who spread rumors about him being a monster. During his reign no one dared to stole and live by thievery, and he also supported the middle class.

Great video as always. As for vlad i do not think he was that brutal based on his age perceptions. He was demonized in the 19th century due to brams. Many loards did worst massacres than him. He was a great leader and a very good tactician. As for radu it is rumored that he was the sultans lover.

Charles Martel! The Hammer! Battle of Tours is debated as to its significance - though both Muslim and Christian writers at the time attest to the effectiveness of Martel's training and his force's ability to repel the Moors. Seems likely all of mainland Europe could have been converted had Martel failed or was slain at the Battle of Tours.

I don't know if you have this already, but do you have some historical info on our neighbor, Ungaria (aka Hungary)? The origin of the Hungarian people and their language, Attila the Hun? I've heard that they originate from Asia, but it's hard to believe, possibly. The Turkish and Hungarian language sound very similar to me and I've heard that their is some intertwined history regarding that? It would be interesting to have some historic knowledge on that.

Vlad' life is too complex to encapsulate in an 18 min video. However; there are some points that are quizzical, Vladislav II of Wallachia was a member of Societas Draconistorum, a Catholic organization implying he was already a Catholic, therefore why the conversion in order to marry a Hungarian Catholic? Do you recommend any books on Vlad as there are too many discrepancies depending on source. Finally Vlad Tepes was a capable military leader, his battles and tactics alone, require their own video.
