The Ouija Board is a very strange product. I think we've all just come to accept for what it is without giving it a second thought. But when we take a closer look at it, the strangeness becomes more clear. This video looks at its origin, history, cultural significance, and of course the business end of it.

Ohhhh, 8 and up, is it? I kind of broke the rules, then. I volunteer at this Secular/Atheist summer camp every year, and a Ouija board was mixed into the games donated to the camp one particular year. The seven and eight year olds I was in charge of wanted to play with it, and I couldn’t see any reason to tell them they couldn’t. Obviously, nothing bad happened to them. I wonder why the minimum age, though.

The reason ouja boards cost $20 is that in order for them to work, the boxes must also contain an invisible version for ghosts to use and moving objects into the ghost world is expensive.

When I was in 7 grade, my class (plus one more class, ~55 kids all together) went on overnight school trip to nearby mountains. Some classmates decided to bring Ouija board with them and 6 or 7 of us decided to try it after we should already been sleeping (10pm). We used some tea candles to provide the light. My roommate and I just wanted to watch and not participate. Rest of them sat in a circle and started playing it. After about 10 mins, roommate and I got bored and decided to quietly leave without telling anyone. When I open the doors, a gush of air blow in (it was small room, a lot of people in (and a bit hot) and hallways were a bit cold) and blow out half of the candles. Those that were playing freaked out and started to scream and run downstairs because they though some dark spirit or ghost did that. A lot of classmates came out of their room to see what happened and teachers and principle went berserk. Word spread quickly that they called ghosts and spirits and that one came etc. As a results, bunch of classmates had problem getting to sleep that night. Friend and I were hiding in our room the whole time because we thought we might get in troubles because we were outside of our room after 10pm. We only learned about all the issues his caused in the morning.

True story here I'm so not saying I can explain any of what happened but I swear this is out things went. I was probably 7 years old. 1990 or 1991. My babysitter who was maybe 16 at the time asked me if I wanted to try ouija with her. I was scared as hell but couldn't show it to her since I reeeeaaaaallllly liked her... you know... Anyway, she said she didn't have a ouija board but it didn't matter. Took a piece of cardboard, wrote yes, no, the alphabet, numbers, and good bye. (which was supposedly very important because you could get cursed if you didn't say good bye... I was 7, it was logical to me) She use a tringular piece of plastic and there you go, we were calling en entity. She told it was important not to touch the plastic thing. Fingers had to over like half an inch above it. When it started moving I screamed and removed my hands but she freaked out and told me to put them back. We asked a couple question, answers were completely wrong except for our names and a couple of odd things *it* shouldn't have known. At some point I told myself she was messing with me and she was moving the piece just to scare me. At this exact moment, she sneezed and covered her mouth with both hands. The homemade ouija board was spelling a word. It didn't stop with her sneeze and I swear I wasn't touching shit. I had nightmares for a long time after that. Never touched a board since. Never will. Maybe I was moving it. But maybe I wasn't. And that's freaky

I played around with it as a young kid because my mom liked playing with it. I basically suggested something akin to the ideomotor effect having never heard of it, because I've always been extremely skeptical about the supernatural. But...it was a fun enough diversion in the pre-internet days. So I invited my friend over to play it with me. My mom had several rules about what could or could not be asked of the board such as not being allowed to ask how or when anyone would die. My friend immediately jumped in with the question "when will I die?" The pointer spelled out the word "TODAY". It really freaked him out...like really badly. He was deathly allergic to bees and this was late spring in the suburbs of Detroit...there are (or were) quite a lot of bees around at this time. He was really freaked out and needed fresh air, so we went into the front yard and he was pacing asking me if I consciously moved the pointer to scare him...I hadn't consciously done anything really. Then a bee landed on his arm and just wandered around. He froze completely still and started saying "this is it" over and over while quietly sobbing. Finally, with tears streaming down his face, the bee flew away...uninterested in stinging him. He fell to his knees and just stayed there...unwilling or unable to answer anyone's questions or requests. We called his mom to come get him and let her know about all of it. She ended up driving him to his doctor and from there he was taken to a hospital for shock. He was physically fine the next day, but he was still distant and uncooperative with basic requests. He ended up spending a month in a mental health facility afterward because he was completely convinced that the spirits of the Ouija board were trying to kill him. He had undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia, and this incident had served to make it very apparent. So...a warning. If you are a skeptic and take nothing on faith...the Ouija board can be a bit of fun for a few minutes (not worth the $20 asking price anyway)...but if you are remotely superstitious or have shown signs of mental illness...STAY AWAY.

The only thing I can say about a Ouija board was that one time I used it with my wife and I ask the spirit what its first name was and it gave me a name that I never heard of and my mother told me that it was my great-grandmother's name it was a very odd name that I'd never even heard before. The other thing that happened was we were in a house that was haunted where we lived and my parents with some friends use the Ouija board and asked it for a sign and at that moment the dog ran around the circle's and vomited on the floor. Is it real I don't know but those are two very interesting things. I almost forgot one other story a girl I know was using it alone and I was asking you questions in Spanish and it was answering in Spanish and that girl did not speak a word of Spanish. Take it for what you wish but I witnessed all three of these things

When it comes to the paranormal I try and keep an open mind, even if I am a bit skeptical. Even then, I generally just don't believe in stuff like the Ouija Board. The modern ones are so obviously toys, even if they are interesting. However, I don't care what anyone says. My opinion on the Ouija Board is the same as anything else paranormal. I am NOT going to play with the spooky ghost board, even if it is a novelty. Say what you want, but I'd rather not risk contacting some kind of spooky demon overlord. Hell to the no. Once there was an all powerful god and he created angels to live with him in heaven. Then, one day an angel named Lucifer turned against his creator and started a war to take over heaven. God was too strong for Lucifer and his turned angels. And after the war had ended God cast down into hell all of those that had turned against him, along with Lucifer, but hell was not to hold them forever. Despite his omniscience, God didn't see that there was a way for Lucifer and his minions to escape. The Ouija board does most certainly have the potential to summon &/or allow evil to enter into your life! The planchette has three peg legs & it’s triangle shaped, so if someone uses extra force to try & move it on purpose, it either doesn’t slide smoothly across the board, or it tips towards the side of the applied force. I suppose when only two people are playing, it is possible that one of the participants could purposefully move the planchette, but like I said, it tips sideways easily. Lastly, when playing Ouija, each participant has only one or two fingers tips lightly placed on the planchette, & when there are three or four people are sitting at a table or on the floor facing one another, it’s nonsensical to think the planchette can be moved on purpose or unconsciously by everyone in the same direction! It’s quite unfortunate they call Ouija a game, because it’s no toy, it has the potential to be very dangerous & ruin lives.

Maybe it should be noted that novelty divination techniques were actually pretty popular in general in the 19th century; like throwing chestnuts with names on them into a fire and if one caught flame instead of popping, that person would marry you. Or using wilting cabbage to tell the future (I don't remember how, but it led to early Halloween cards with cabbage people). It's interesting how a society largely more religious than today had less of a taboo on these things. The demonization of ouija might have arisen more from general 'satanic panic' in the 60's-80's, the kind that led people to say dungeons and dragons would give you satanic magic powers. Also there are Chinese divination techniques that are loosely similar to the ouija board and I've heard that there's a direct evolution there but couldn't prove it.

It relies on the ideomotor effect, you can do it alone or multiple, the real issue is, this group requires a "belief" system. So if you were to put 3 science minded atheists with no knowledge of the paranormal, it would not work. But once you take up this belief system, then your body will take control of it without you knowing it. Its how "auto" matic writing works. Cause belief and subject you are asking about and have "knowledge about it" this is what your mind will try to point it to, works better for "gullible" people, so its good to have like 1-3 gullible people that believe in this stuff. Religious people mostly gravitate towards this type of things, as they believe in magical claims without evidence.. like demons, as "ghosts" don't exist in the bible. You can do it alone as well,, doesnt require 2. ideomotor effect itself is prety neat even without the board.

For anyone who'd like to know, the plastic piece that moves around the board is officially called the "planchette". There used to be a somewhat similar-themed toy in the 60's and 70's called something like The Amazing Kreskin ESP. Which had a Ouija-type board with letters and numbers, but you used a hand held pendulum that swung back and forth which indicated letters to form answers to your questions. Kreskin was a famous psychic at the time and was a minor sensation, appearing on all the talk shows demonstrating his "amazing" gift of ESP. I wonder whatever became of him? Cheers!

I’m a very superstitious person so every opportunity I’ve had to use one I’ve declined, I’ve had many unsettling experiences with demonic entities and I do my best not to become vulnerable to having any type of encounter again. Also years ago when me and my friend were talking to my dad about ouija boards he said when he was a teenager he was at a friends house and some of his buddies were using it, he told them to ask the board something like “is Jesus the son of Christ” I can’t remember exactly what he said but when they asked it that the board stopped moving, now me also being strong in my faith I believe and have experienced that even saying the name “Jesus” will strike fear in demons or ghosts or whatever paranormal entity is bothering you and they will immediately start to leave you alone. You don’t have to believe anything I said but I advise anyone who reads this to keep in mind the power that believers of Christ have within them

back in high school wood shop i took a slab of cherry wood and built a ouija board. i carved all the letters then woodburned them and added minor designs. about a week later i cut my hand carving another project, and i poured my blood on the board. there's not a lot, just a bit for design. then i coated it in polyurethane and used it with a buddy. for a good while, weird shit would happen in my workshop. i found my estwing hammer on the floor a good several feet from the bench it belongs on. i have hot wheel cars from when i was a kid on the fridge in here (i'm in my workshop right now). i was working on a shelf with my pops when one of the cars flew off the fridge. no one was near it. it was a porche. anyway i ended up putting the board in a paper bag and storing it somewhere in here. the weird stuff has stopped for now. note: if you use a ouija board and something "unwanted'' shows up, take the board and bury it in the ground very far away. Do not destroy it or burn it.

I'm in the bathroom and i can feel my dead friend in there with me and he's freaked out. Turns out he died while he was asleep and woke up dead in his body and he really just needed someone to talk to. So he told me what happened and how he felt (not with spoken words. I can't really explain it) and i sat with him until he felt better he said thanks and took off. Damn. I tear up just thinking about it. Here's the most disturbing thing I associate with the Ouija board, in Breaking Bad there was a Ouija board in Hector's nursing home. Why do I find that disturbing? Because of the implications associated with a toy to talk to the dead in a nursing home, where people make friends, and those friends die. "I sure miss Ethel, she was my best friend." "Well Susan let's use the Ouija board to talk with her." That just doesn't sit right with me. With my religious beliefs, I see this as nothing but bad. At best, it's a "scam" (doesn't do anything, one friend messing with everyone else); at worst, you're communicating with demons (and that's REALLY bad).

In Vietnam, we do have the same type of ouija but it has different criteria. The board must be made from a used casket (means someone has been buried with it and someone else dig it up and use the casket for this game) and the best place to play is in the cemetery at midnight. The elders also said that this should NOT be played inside a house or it would open the gate for the devils to enter the house. Our great grandmother never allowed anyone in the family to play this game.

They did an experiment, the first round everyone played with the board, and were shocked at the results. However, round two they were all blind folded. They didn't spell out a single phrase or word. I have a somewhat strange story about an ouija board. The summer between my 8th and 9th grade years, which was like 6 years ago, I went to a summer camp. Around the second night some guys from my cabin, including me decided to mess around with one that someone brought. At first nothing happened, until one guys asked the board "do you know my name". Mind you, he was sitting watching, his hand wasn't on the board. The peg started moving, spelling out his first and middle name, but when it got his last name wrong, we all started assuming it was bullshit. But the guy who asked the board started freaking out, and told us he changed his last name when he was young after his parents got divorced, and the board had spelled out his ORIGINAL last name. That none of us besides him knew. We stopped after that. Was it supernatural? I don't know, maybe, but it certainly freaked us out.

Over the next six months I kept seeing creepy things everywhere. I didn't tell anyone at the time because I didn't want to be made fun of. Then a week before graduation, my friends and I were hanging out and one of the girls asked if we remembered the Ouija board. We all said yes. She then said that she kept seeing things for about six months after. We all froze and one by one told our story. I'm 30 now, and didn't become a Christian until about five years ago. I add that because I've told people this before and they said I was just influenced by my beliefs, but I didn't even believe at the time.

1:22 It's because they don't work. The ideomotor effect causes one person in the group to slightly nudge it in one direction, then everyone else feels this, knows it's not them, then without knowing it starts nudging it towards its direction. Before somebody comes in here with a personal anecdote, let me give one myself. Somebody brought one to school a couple of weeks ago and I joined in. "Ghost, are you there?" or whatever. I nudged the thing towards "no" just a little. After a bit of struggle, and two people noticing what I was up to (but not the other 3 or 4), the thing slowly started moving towards "no." Eventually I let go, and it continued going towards "no." Kept going, then steered off away from the corner and towards the edge a bit. Somebody tried to make a pattern from it. "No, it's going to each corner, then it lands on "yes." There are other things proving this to be a hoax. I think the board is still really cool, nonetheless. The ideomotor effect is interesting by itself, so whether ghosts do the work or our subconscious, it's still just as interesting.

Me and my friends ended up using the board to summon a group of succubi. We ended up getting raped and molested. Demon bitches be crazy.

You should do one for Windows Vista. That's a pretty interesting topic and it's a lot more complex than simply "Vista was a flop and Windows 7 fixed it."
