The biggest part that wasn't mentioned, is that you can find Dr Pepper on both Coca Cola and Pepsi fountains anywhere you go. That subsidizing to the top 2 makers really helps them.

Back in the early 2000's at several of the Domino's Pizza (corporate stores) I worked at as a delivery driver in far west Houston metro area, we noticed that our customers preferred the Dr. Pepper 20 oz bottle drinks more than any other soda flavors. So much that eventually (as the story was told to us) that Coca-Cola demanded that Domino's drop Dr. Pepper as one of the choices for our customers and replaced it with Mr. Pibbs (which was supposed to be Coca-Cola's version of Dr. Pepper). Our regular customers were NOT pleased with that change.

Dr Pepper has been huge regionally in Texas since it has its roots here. Most fast food or restaurant businesses sign exclusive deals with either Coca Cola or Pepsi to use their fountain drinks, but in Texas it's common for them to allow the option for the owner to also provide Dr Pepper. Because of how popular it is, the store will have a noticeable decline in reviews/business if they don't offer Dr Pepper.

I worked at a bottling company that produced Dr Pepper, among other sugary fizzy concoctions. I can tell you that while I couldn't tell you what the 23 flavors are, I do know that the concentrate they used was straight phosphoric acid that came in a tiny box. Each box would yield 10,000 units (2 litre bottles), and the stuff had a cloying, sickly sweet odor that would stay in your nose for days. I couldn't drink DP for years after I left that place.

Dublin wasn't the original bottling plant, they just made it with Pure Cane Sugar the longest using the old recipe. I use to grab a bunch of them when I would travel through Dublin on my way to college in Alpine from East Texas around Tyler. Then I started to see them in stores around Tyler. I knew they had an agreement with Snapple to not sell outside the 3 counties around Dublin but thought it might have changed. Well, it didn't and they were quickly sued out of the rights to produce Dr Pepper. I felt bad for them but they did violate their agreement with Snapple in which they signed.

It's completely messed up in Europe. In the UK (where coca cola produce it) the branding is completely different, as are the flavours. We occasionally get Dr Pepper imported from Europe to some stores, which tastes totally different and comes in different bottle designs. I believe Keurig own the rights and produce it themselves or license it to PepsiCo in Poland, which results in the weird mix match of drinks that are called Dr Pepper. It's a super confusing mess of trademark law.

@@AlottaBoulchit When I was in college, in our marketing class we were presented with 3 different types of cola. Coke, Pepsi and RC Cola. The class first guessed which would be the most popular. IIRC Pepsi narrowly beat out Coke and RC was dead last on the guesses. They they had the class do a blind taste test and mark which of the three they actually liked the best. RC cola won like 74% of the vote. Granted, the whole point of that lesson was to show the power of marketing. Our professor then showed us the estimated sales of Coke/Pepsi and then compared it to the wildly smaller sales of RC cola.

Both of those major companies have been buying up foreign soda companies. For example, Coca Cola owns 40% of Inca Kola Peru. Coca Cola has the world rights to Inca Kola while the original Peruvian company kept the rights in Peru plus they got to bottle other CC sodas in Peru. CC. is supposedly going to push Inca Kola in Asia since marketing has shown that Asians prefer light colored drinks. Inca Kola tastes like gum.

I also found it funny that I was able to buy Pepsi-Cola merch in the gift shop. LOL

I swear the floors still felt sticky with soda syrup from years past in the old bottling room but that was probably my imagination! 🤣 When you go take a GOOD look at the outside of the building as you can see a "scar" from the damage the building suffered from an F5 tornado in the 1950s! It's been 8 years since I went to that museum and I still look back at the experience often! I hope to go back sometime soon. ❤

I always thought it was called Dr Pepper because the sugar put a "pep in your step" so to speak. So the name was saying that it was a doctor telling you "this will pep you up!". Thus the marketing campaign "be a pepper". It only makes sense if they're saying "drink this and you'll have the energy to pep up everyone's day and make everyone happy and excited"
@EcoMouseChannel
@EcoMouseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the term "Pep" was really thrown around a lot in the late 1800s. Some of the early ads for Pepsi and Dr. Pepper literally said things like, "Adds Vim & Vigor to Your Life!" or as you said, "Put's a Pep in Your Step!" I used to collect vintage ads and magazines... crazy the things tonics and such would claim as "Cure Alls For Your Ails" Sodas quite literally started out as carbonated medicine syrups. That's why they all originated in pharmacies and drug stores.

I've always theorized that they probably called it Dr's Pepper as in "The Doctor's Pep--er". Due to the popularity of the word "pep" at that time period as seen in everything from coal and cocaine benefits to energy from radioactive products in the early to mid 20th century. And they simplified it down to "Dr. pepper" because it probably seemed obvious and simple as the pepper from the doctors. Dr. And pepper. Two easy words to associate with health and energy.

Dr Pepper is great when it comes off a Coke fountain, but when it comes off a Pepsi fountain it always tastes watered down. I've always been surprised that Dr Pepper doesn't require a specific syrup to water ratio so the quality is consistent.
