Take me home, Outer Worlds! Obsidian's long-awaited The Outer Worlds is, quite frankly, everything I needed it to be. Rich, dense, brilliantly written, it's everything we've been missing in the wake of "live services" and other "AAA" trash.
With its onslaught of satire and wonderful sense of progression, The Outer Worlds is the spiritual successor to Fallout: New Vegas folks have needed, and I'll go even further - it's way better!

“They just made a video game and sold a video game!” Not to mention it wasn’t released in early access in some broken, unfinished state either, like Sea of Thieves. They just worked on the game until it was finished, THEN sold it. Can’t believe that’s such a rarity nowadays; the industry is fucked.

I'd argue that depending on how it's handled, early access makes games feel more alive. With Outer worlds, early access wasn't nessicary, but with other games like subnautica, it can make the game feel more personal. Kind of a case by case situation for me.

So, as much as i HATE Bethesda, Todd and Pete... they will not find anything innnovative or new to steal, and add to Starfield. All was already in Fallout 3 too. One of the things I like about the skill system, is that the "core" skill abilities unlock first. So you get access to blocking or sneak attacks or whatever right from the start. You don't need to have a character with all your points pumped into one stat just to unlock the option to do things. Rather you can pretty much do it all from the start, and can simply focus to get better.

John Tejada It sure has felt that way for a long time now. Obsidian is always dropping excellent rpg’s though. If you like isometric rpg’s Pillars of Eternity 1&2 are awesome. It’s important to note that they began this project as an indy studio and completed with a limited budget, nothing like that of the Fallout games. And though Microsoft acquired Obsidian, they still gave them free reign, didn’t force microtransactions and monetization. Seeing how well it’s doing, with Microsoft backing, this could be a beginning of a new era.

I take it you are a member of the Labor Party. I worked for a corporation that did think something like the people in The Outer Worlds. You were seen as part of the family when you got tenure (5 years for this company). We had an in house doctor for industrial accidents. Fortunately I was in the union and we had some protection. Company used to be run well when engineers ran the company, but then lawyers and accountants stepped in. Eventually company assets were sold off and now that company is a shell of it's former self. Game closer to real life than you might think. America was like this post Civil War(1865) up to about 1900. Example - look at the history of Standard Oil.

There doesn't appear to be friendly fire damage against your companions, but you can command them to rush into a fight and stand by to let them die to your heart's content or disband them from your team at any time. You can kill everyone you come across, from what I've seen, other than individuals safely behind protective glass.

I found this the hardest bit of DMing - presenting scenarios that offer each player a chance to do something useful. Unfortunately players tend to undervalue conversation skills. They recognise dark shady places as a spot where the rogue types are most useful, but they usually miss situations where the charismabots should be allowed to try a bit of negotiating. They've got a sword; they want to hit things with it.

Tennessee Fairfield I had a 30 minute conversation with a companion that ended with them reading a letter they got word for word and asking for advice. It didn’t feel like a quest or like the game was trying to tell me anything or advance the plot at all It wasn’t even background flavor because nothing cool happened and nothing relevant about the world or characters was said. Nothing but talking about mundane shit because I the player was interested in what was going on with this character and it was fucking amazing It’s the most immersed I’ve ever been in a videogame and afterwards I was like wtf was THAT lol. Also the fact that throughout the dialogue there were hella speech options including skill checks as well as the option to just tell them to shut the fuck up at anytime (you have that option w/ every npc btw) automatically puts Outer Worlds above like 90% of rpg games Did I mention that every mission is optional/can be failed and you can kill literally everybody?
