There was nothing wrong with him last season, the issue was that Klopp never played him in his position. Gakpo has been a world class player for a while now, but Klopp never gave him anywhere near enough time on the left. He has the ability to be a 30+ G/A forward every season.

Nobody understands this. He's 100% our most composed player in the final third. He's the only one who never hits anything wild. If he plays from the left every game, he's our 2nd top scorer and assister, easily. Potential to be our main man with goals and assists in the near future.

Clinical, always under control. He was good in the WC but broke out in the Euros, playing in his most natural position (left winger). It helps that he has fellow international players Gravenberch and Big Virg to translate that to the club level.

You depict events disingenuously stating playing Cody G in the centre was ‘wrong’ when he actually done a fantastic job in that role, linking up play etc Players can play in multiple roles, yet you’re in the mindset of someone from the 80s Just like TAA being able to play one ‘role’ same with Darwin, same with Gravenbirch and so on! The game has moved on from being stuck in one role but so many pundits and fans still have this single minded view that a person can only perform in one role Gerrard performed in multiple roles, Henry, Mcmanaman, Scholes, Giggs, Heskey and so on

@@pedtalkssports Sure, but in modern football it is a big advantage if a player can adapt to multiple positions. Slot is rotating Diaz and Gakpo, whereas Klopp didn't do that, he had other priorities. When you look at Klopp's results it's hard to argue that he was not getting the best out of his squad. Meanwhile, Slot has started extremely well, no doubt, but so far he has proved nothing. Besides, there is no reason a player with Gakpo's intelligence and skill set should not have been able to adapt to the role Klopp asked of him. Sure, it can take time to grow into a new role, but in fact, Cody did a good job for Klopp.
