I love hearing instruments isolated like this. Shows what a melodic bass player he was. Pretty tight too - would be good to hear some drums to see how his parts mesh with them. Great old-school bass.

My first live rock concert was The Who, in '76, when Moon the Loon, was still with us. It was like going to the SuperBowl, your first football game. No rock band could match the unique juggernaut that was The Who, with those 4 diverse originals...the most, truly dynamic, live band! The last time I saw them was their Quadrophenia Tour...of course, The Ox stole the show, once again. Chris Squire cited John as his biggest influence, locking himself in a room for a year, woodshedding to The Who.

Lived his life with coke and hotel hookers... and you know, that's the way he died. Real R&R lifestyle icon. RIP The OX

Ironically The Who never played 'The Ox' LIVE even though it closed out the first LP. My Generation a hit with not a guitar solo but a John Entwhistle BASS SOLO.

Never heard such amazing powerfull sounds from a bass player with himself seeming as enthusiastic as a wet rag! Yea, i know, that's just the wat John E. was.

I have never seen any other bassplayer move the fingers of his right hand in this very special way. Maybe not very precise, maybe not at all effective ... but soooo powerful! I love it!

Check out Les Claypool from Primus - he is probably the best player alive now.

Listen to that last note at 8:26 that he lets go to feedback and then working his pickup selector switch just like a guitarist. Awesome! I love to take any of The Who live albums and just turn the balance to the left channel so I can listen to all the amazing stuff John plays. He’s so fucking good and I’ve never heard anyone else play with a sound like his…. not as a special effect for a certain song or a certain part in a song… it’s his sound. So powerful. Listen to the entire super deluxe version of Live at Leeds on only the left channel. You’ll be glad you did.

Replying to myself again: it’s one of the knobs he’s quickly turning up & down at the end 😮 not a pickup selector switch, like I said earlier. What is the bass he’s using? Alembic? A really small body for an Explorer type bass.
