A TD (To Deliver) pipette should not be shaken. The tip should be in contact with the wall of the receiving vessel for three seconds after delivery appears to have stopped. The vessel wall needs to be dry so you would need to deliver slightly above the liquid line in the beaker. And, chemistry cannot be made boring. Although I have had many lecturers try their best, none have succeeded. :)

I find it hilarious that he suggested this experiment at the level of an honours class. Such thermodynamics experiments and oxidation of Acetone(and oxidising powers of ClO) are within the scope of GCE A levels (Singapore-Cambridge), though in seperate portions of the curriculum.

They've been dumbing us down with all manner of evils, the bar is just set lower and lower every year. My sons are 10 years apart and their education level is half of what I learned for the first son and half of what he learned for the second son. It sickening.

This is why i review. I never knew the heat made in a haloform reaction was mostly made from just dissolving the acetone into water. Next time i make chloroform i am going to put the acetone in water first. Then put it in the bleach.

i will not state my age but know im young. i was cleaning my white shoelaces in a plastic bottle when only bleach and some water, the it occurred to me to put in some nail polish remover. i put in a little bit and then saw the mixture turned red, i immediately searched it up and saw i basically made chloroform. i went to dump it on the dirt and the bottle was fairly hot

Even though you have insulated the inner glass container, doesn't it still throw off the temperature reading because the glass itself still has to be heated up too and that is not part of the oxidation?

This is the new progressive genius teaching teachers to teach students. While the reactions are both exothermic, both are calculable, and his demonstration would be worth much more if he simply derived the contributions.....something his students may very well have to do. Only a lab rat would think he is teaching lab process properly by segregating the two reactions, then suggesting it my only be appropriate for advanced classes. Maybe students are really that stupid today. A bit like teaching math, but avoiding algebra because it is to complex.

Of course you would add the mass of the reactants and the beaker. It simply was not in the scope of what was being presented in the video.

First off you put the bleach in the frig/ freezer while still in the bottle. When you remove the bleach, you pour off about 100ml of bleach out of the bottle. You then add the acetone, in excess, into the bleach bottle. give it a little swirl then loosen the top of the bleach bottle and let it do its thing. I would leave it a full 24 hours. Then you pour off most of the bleach solution and then use a separatory funnel the separate the Chloroform from the last little bit of bleach solution. And you can always go trailer park and pour that last bit into a Beaker and use a syringe to reach down to the bottom of the beaker and pull out the chloroform.

Okay, this probably isn't relevant, but it bothers me that he covers the thermometer probe with his fingers while he's catalyzing the solution, and he stops before the thermometer reads above body heat.

Nice video, but you didn't mention the Haloform reaction or the fact by oxidising the bleach you effectively make small amounts of chloroform. I guess that is a little out of the scope of the video, but I am sure the students would be interested with just a mention of it. Just my 2 cents worth of input.

This is to teach teachers something new to teach, it's not a TV show. He says it's "more like an honours level", so that's for the 3rd year of university in America (or school 6th-form in Britain). Normally a teacher would be recommended to avoid this, because it's thought to be dangerous (although the CLEAPSS hazcards do not specifically prohibit this reaction). "Interface temperature probes" is not a phrase one would use on TV, either.

When actually performing the full experiment, the mass of the beaker would be taken into account. Just sayin'. You'll note he did not take a final measurement or compute the heat of reaction. He was illustrating other points.

So I was caught by the title. Then a goggle guy puts grocery store bleach in a cup and adds acetone and then with his styrene cup thermo-probe holder moves the collection around on a counter and then - - - then - - - - THEN starts talking about it being honors level chemistry EXCEPT you did nothing but move a cup around in circles. What the hell did you actually do? Where is the result? And what does one then do with it? Maybe if you had lead with something about Chloroform? Cos that's what you ended up with isn't it?

What was the point of this video? At first I thought he was showing off his home made acetone. Nope, temps still increased during the reaction. Then I got completely thrown off by polystyrene cups being used instead of beakers. What? Why would anybody do that. But then he stuck the coffee cup overtop of the reaction. That's a good habit to get into, completely sealing the space above reactions... Then he said 4mL is needed and this is a 5mL pipette so I'll just use 1mL. Once again, what? Originally, I was going to comment to just cool down the bleach solution, but then I thought he was attempting to actually limit the temperature increase. But by the end, I don't think there was an actual point, thus this comment.
