The Pace - What Is it? - Gaited Horse Training

The pace is a 2 beat gait with a moment of suspension. The gaits that are smooth are 4 beat not 2. The pace is also at the end of the gaited spectrum, so if pacing, sometimes you just need to slow down to get the gait you want.
Separating the horses legs just another 1-2 seconds will usually smooth out the gait to a 4 beat foot fall and make it smooth. You can do this using poles or lateral movements and then practice over and over to condition the horse not to pace undersaddle anymore.
One reason so many fail at fixing the pacing horse, is because they still let the horse pace at times, so the horse will always try to pace. If you do not want to pace, then no longer let your horse pace at all. Spend the time at home and fix it then ride the correct speed for your horse to gait. Over time with conditioning they will be able to gait faster, but if you let them pace, then they will always pace. Why? Because its easy and they know after they try so many times, you will just give up and let them.

Agree!! Only acceptable pace for Icelandics is the "flying pace". Pace is usually a very uncomfortable gait to ride. Trot & walk gaits very important to developing 4 beat gaits. Some people avoid the trot, but shouldn't. 😊
