I think Snafu didn't want to wake him up and say goodbye because he seemed to have a moment of peace after all the sleep deprivation, nightly japanese attacks, bombings and nightmares. Another reason could be that Snafu wanted to finally put it all behind him and doing that, wouldn't even say goodbye to Sledge. That's how he seemed to cope also going forward as he didn't even talk to his fellow marines for 35 years. Fun fact: the pipe Sledge has in the show was given to the actor by the real Sledge's family, so it's the real thing!

The Pacific is such a great companion piece to Band of Brothers, together they form such a full picture of what war does to people. If someone asked me to sum up the themes of the two shows, I would say that Band of Brothers is about how war makes people, and The Pacific is about how war breaks people
@joelhadfield5205

I've always loved both shows but for me I think the pacific is the best, it shows just how brutal it can be without showing the real thing but also shows how it can be trying to adapt back to civilian life. I always wished band of brothers had shown that at the end.

I can’t recommend Eugene’s book “With the Old Breed” enough! I have read it three times already. It’s a harrowing reminder of the costs of war. If you look up Eugene’s later life, he became a serious advocate against the use of military force and has spoken in lectures of the costs of war. It’s a reminder to me to always question the reasons for going to war. Take a look at his book, you won’t be disappointed.

I currently attend the college, Auburn University (formerly known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute) that Sledge attended and there are traces of him everywhere. "My father saw himself as a simple scientist, who had endured something unspeakable " In case any one wondered his nightmare, it was a dead Marine's rotting corpse that had a wicked smile on it, Genes' hole was up an elevation looking down into the water filled shell hole the Marine was in, maggots crawling all over him eating his remains, in his nightmares Sledge would find himself back in that place staring at that same corpse who would mock Sledge's foolishness at thinking he could ever leave Okinawa alive, the corpse would become him to either join him, or that he would die there. His other nightmare was the day before they were sent south to releave the army unit that was being demolished by Japanese shell fire, he dreaded the thought of going back "into the abyss " as he called it. We know this because he wrote it, while he had other nightmares I'm sure, those haunted him the worst and longest.

Thanks for the ride on a great miniseries. I always feel a little sad when a series like this is finished. Both Sledge's and Leckie's books are good reading and I recommend. Sledge was lucky to have a father that understood the PTSD hell he was in. If I had to rank the shows, BoB is still leading, I just felt more connected to Easy. I still try and watch both series every year.

I don't know if you caught the small tie-in to BoB early in the episode when Leckie gets home and goes to pay the cab driver. The driver when refusing the money said that he had jumped into Normandy which means he was a paratrooper, perhaps even from the 101st.
@jamesf.ryaniii7918
@jamesf.ryaniii7918 Жыл бұрын
There were 5 airborne divisions - 11th, 13th, 17th, 82nd & 101st. The 11th was deployed to the pacific. The 13th provided replacements for the 82nd and 101st. The 17th had only 1 jump - into Germany in late 1945. The 82nd and 101st both jumped into Normandy (among others). So, you are correct, the cab driver could have been from the 82nd or the 101st.
@jamesf.ryaniii7918
@jamesf.ryaniii7918 Жыл бұрын
The 11th was deactivated in 1965 but was reactivated in June 2022. They are an airborne paratrooper division based in Elmendorf Alaska. The 13th & 17th were both deactivated after WWII. The 82nd has been in continuous operation as paratrooper division since WWII - based at Fort Bragg, NC. The 101st has also been in continuous operation - based out of Fort Campbell, KY. However, the 101st was re-designated an air assault division during the Vietnam War. Soldiers are inserted via helicopters rather than jumping out of aircraft.

Something else I think you would really enjoy watching is the Ken Burns documentary mini-series "The War," about World War II. He followed people from four communities in different parts of the U.S. (the South, New England, California, and the northern Great Plains.) Syd Phillips and his sister were both interviewed extensively, and reminisced about Eugene Sledge. The docuseries also covered the lives of civilians back in the U.S. and some Americans who were prisoners of the Japanese (one soldier and one civilian.)

Great job reacting to both 'The Pacific' and 'Band of Brothers'. Sledges book 'With the Old Breed from Peleliu to Okinawa' is considered by most to be the best first hand account of life as an infantryman in combat ever written. It puts you inside of Sledges mind and gives you an understanding of the fear and suffering of combat that the Pacific or any other movie or show ever could. If you want to read some great first hand accounts of combat as a paratrooper during WW2 I highly recommend reading four books written by Don Burgett who served in Able Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne. The same regiment as 'Band of Brothers' Easy Company. His books 'Currahee' Road to Arnhem' Seven Roads to Hell' and 'Beyond the Rhine' are on par with Sledges book.

There's a great documentary series called THE WAR directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. It's in 7 parts, about 14 hours total run time. It focuses on life at home (in four towns in the US) and their experiences at war (Europe and Pacific). It was released on PBS (Public Broadcasting) in 2007 and was narrated by Keith David (Childs from THE THING, he and Kurt Russell were the last two). A lot of celebrities read letters and sections of memoirs (including from Sledge), and their are veteran interviews (including Sidney Phillips). Brilliant series. Very informative and moving.

The scene with Eugene and his father dove hunting reminds me of the story my dad told when he got home from Vietnam, but his is humorous, or he made it sound humorous and later as a retired Marine who had been in combat on 3 different continents, I realized it was not humorous My dad said when he first came back from Vietnam his friends took him duck hunting. They were in the blinds amd when the ducks flew over amd everyone started shooting, my dad placed his shotgun down a said, "nope, not going to do this." and walked back to the truck and waited for his friend to drive him home.

I'm pretty sure I've said this before on one of your videos, but With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa is probably one of the best memoirs written about one's experiences in war. It's a tough read at times, but so well written. As for my favorite between the two miniseries, I've always felt that Band of Brothers was a little better in terms of maintaining a cohesive storyline, but I really enjoyed the source material for The Pacific, especially Sledge's book. I think they tried to narrow the scope of characters when making The Pacific, but in trying to cover the entire time span from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, they lost out on telling a story where we could have really gotten to know a particular set of characters. As much as I love all of the characters, I wished they would have chosen to focus on Sledge's experiences or even Leckie as well, but by throwing in Basilone, they ended up kind having to skim over all three guys.

Just as a little correction the Mighty Eighth is about the USAAF daylight bombing campaign against Germany not paratroopers. I must say the first trailer was put out 9 years ago and its become a complete frustration. HBO possibly decided they did not want to do a show about bombing German cities so it just went on hold, now however its sold to Apple TV and they must be working on it. So hopefully soon.

R.V. Burgin also has a book called Island of the Damned about his service in the Pacific. also a good read along with With the Old Breed and Helmet for my Pillow. The show coming out should be out at the end of the year on AppleTV and it's called Masters of the Air, based off the book by Donald L. Miller about the bomber plane crews, not paratroopers.

The new show is called Masters of the Air and is due to come out late this year or in 2023. It's about the US 8th Air Force and the raids over Nazi-occupied Europe.

Thank you for your brave and heartfelt reviews of both Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Please at some point watch something about the Korean War. It was a bloody three year conflict that claimed the lives of nearly 37,000 Americans and countless more Koreans and Chinese. A good place to start is the documentary Korea the Forgotten War.

The next series is going to be about the Army Air Corps, not the paratroopers. I'm looking forward to it as my late father served in the Army Air Corps, Army Air Force, and Air Force for 30 years and 3 wars...

I'd recommend Generation Kill next, also an HBO show, think of it like a spiritual successor to BOB and The Pacific hahaha

We have witnessed the end of two truly water shed groups, the survivors of the trenches and horrors of WW1 have all passed, the very last of the men and women who served in WW2 are now in their twilight years, the memories they carry with them will fade into books and shows like this and BoB, which is why these two shows are so valuable, showing the reality of the nightmare of global war. The next show planned is called Masters of the Air, filming was suspended during the pandemic, this show follows the Air War (the battle for control of the air over Europe), it concentrates on the, very costly, US 8th Air Force daylight bombing missions. It mainly follows the 100th Bomber Wing (known as the Bloody Hundredth). Obviously, and sadly, given the aging of the veterans, this show is more based on history books and old interviews rather than direct memoirs.

Really enjoyed your reactions to both Band of Brothers and this. The first time I watched this I didn't enjoy it as much as BoB but over time as I rewatched it I kinda realized it's kinda it's own thing. The European front/enemy was different from the Pacific/enemy. They all went through hell but very different versions of it and its important to see the differences. I love both equally now but appreciate how the Pacific showed some brotherhood aspects but also did it's own thing with Leckey in the hospital or John doing the war bonds tour.

If you desire another really good war film but for Vietnam try 'We Were Soldiers' Mel Gibson. And a film I haven’t seen anyone react to but is exceptional and set in the Korean War. 'TaeGukGi - Brotherhood of War' it’s on KZbin with English subtitles. It’s exceptional. Every emotion. One of the best South Korean films

The next series will be called "Masters of the Air". It will be about the 8th Air Force fighting out of England in World War II. This should truly be great. If you want to get an idea of what it's subject matter is all about, watch this film. It explains everything that would happen on a given day when things got busy over Europe. You can even do a reaction on this "Fight For The Skies" kzbin.info/www/bejne/onatkmyfd7WMmJI and "Target For Today" kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGfckqSVfblml6c
