Whatever your definition of that is, I can guarantee you that it's not the definition that Green Bay Packers quarterback David Whitehurst came up with in 1979 during a game against the Atlanta Falcons, when he said that he played well and had a good game... after losing and after, objectively speaking, playing terribly. This is the breakdown of one of the most head-scratching moments by a quarterback in Packers history

I lived through this and it was rough being a packers fan during this time. Week after week and year after year. Nothing but losing. Fran Tarkington carving up the Packers defense, Walter Payton going up against a Packers defense that was so bad folding chairs could of done a better job of stopping him. Going down to Tampa Bay and watching my team get their asses handed to them by a team that had been in the league 4 years and had previously gone 0-26.

Perhaps you can do a video on the September 13, 1981 game between Green Bay and Atlanta. The Packers were winning, 17-0, going into the 4th quarter, and totally imploded. Winning in Lambeau that day might've given the Pack a playoff appearance, instead of another 8-8 finish.

Fun facts David Whitehurst, if it isn't obvious, is Charlie Whitehurst's dad David is also one of just 5 QB's between 1972-1991 to start a full season, the others being Scott Hunter in 1972, Lynn Dickey for 3 years in 1980, 82 (Strike Shortened), and 83, Randy Wright in 1986, and Majik Man in 1989. David's full season came in 1978 after Dickey would break his leg the year prior.

Carlos Brown started three games for the Packers in the 1970's. After his football career, he changed his name to Alan Autry and co-starred in several movies like North Dallas Forty, Southern Comfort and At Close Range, and starred in his most notable role as Captain Skinner in the TV series, In The Heat of The Night. How many people can claim to be a starting NFL quarterback, the mayor of a major American City and a movie star?

The falcons had success in the late 70s and early 80s, they won a playoff game the previous year, in the 1980-81 season, they had the best record in the league that year, but the cowboys upset them in the divisional round, and in 1982, they won the nfc west again with a 5-4 record.

The, "Duel In Dixie," is, (probably), the reason why Danny White lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game, he just had nothing left, people forget that the Cowboys had the best record in the, NFL, from, 1980-1983, unfortunately, they were also obscenely unlucky in the Playoffs, losing to three teams that went, 8-2, in the SB, they would make one last Playoff appearance in 1985 before, inevitably, flatlining.

I've long held the position that even if one of those early 1980's Danny White-led Cowboys teams had somehow made it to a Super Bowl, I don't think they wouldve won those games against their AFC counterparts. Oakland in 1980 mightve been a borrowed team in a borrowed city, but got hot at the right time, got very lucky with an idiotic decision by Cleveland to go for the TD on Red Right 88 instead of relying on a better, more accurate PK than Don Cockroft, they were coming into Super Bowl XV on a wave of momentum and while Dallas had beaten them earlier in the 1980 season, I think the Raiders would've learned from the experience like they also did @ Eagles and made appropriate adjustments. I do think Dallas maybe gives Oakland a tighter, closer game but that Raiders secondary with Lester Hayes, and their massive front seven led by Ted Hendricks, John Matsusak, a young Matt Millen would've eventually gotten the best of a tired, worn-out and overwhelmed Danny White. Bengals 1981 SB squad was far better, in terms of talent, experience at key positions like QB, WR corps, TE, and even defense than their 1988 counterparts. Except for maybe their respective HC's, the 81 team was lights years ahead of the 88 squad and if Bengals hadn't made numerous idiotic turnovers in-game, along with some questionable red zone decisions, they conceivably mightve beaten 49ers. I just don't see Dallas beating a top-rate, Ken Anderson Bengals team who was on fire and likely having the best year in both his career and in franchise history and what's even more ironic is that Anderson was nearly traded by Bengals FO the previous offseason because Paul Brown thought he was washed-up and past his prime.

​​​@@davidroberts7282I'm with you on the 1980 Raiders, they were, A, Team Of Destiny, as for the 1981 Bengals, they had their worst First Half of the season, and, still only lost SB 14, because Forrest Gregg, indefensibly, went for a, TD, too early, they would have easily beaten the 1982 Dolphins, they only held the lead because of two fluky plays, and, once, they weren't able to bury Washington, they were finished.

I guess the Super Bowl made everybody forget the Dolphins beating the Chargers and Jets that postseason, teams who everybody said were hands down better. The Redskins on the other hand only had to get by the 4-5 Lions, the so-so Vikings and just like '72 the one team they would've had the most motivation to beat in Dallas. If the Bengals were so much better than the '82 Dolphins, then they should've handled their own playoff business instead of getting curbstomped by the same Jets team the '82 Fins beat three times.

The '88 team had a slightly better point differential (+119 to +117) and according to PFR a slightly stronger strength of schedule and SRS rating (analytical measure of total team strength). They also scored more. At best, each team was about as good as the other.

Whitehurst was a third stringer at best on a good day. The Packers were just bad from about 73 to about 90-92 years. It was a place where your career went to die or no one else would play you. Just wondering if you have anything on the Packers game against the Broncos from the early 80's. Think it was a Monday night game in Denver and it was like blizzard conditions. The Packers lost 17-14 but Denver only scored a FG on offense. Two INT's for TD's were the rest of Denvers scoring. Green Bay out played them in every sense of the game except for those two INT's.

Packer fans of this era know Whitehurst was a product of his environment. Pop-gun arm, trouble with his reads, lousy receivers (aside from James Lofton). The Packer passing game was Lombardi era. Whitehurst was asked to make throws that Lynn Dickey easily could make. This sums up the state of the franchise. In 1979, Bart Starr, the head AND GM, wanted to draft Joe Montana in the 3rd round but was talked out of it by his coaching staff in favor of a totally forgettable nose tackle. Two years later, Starr wanted Ronnie Lott in the 1st round but his staff talked him out of it, and tried to make up for the mistake of 1979, and drafted the college version of David Whitehurst with the first pick. Not saying Montana would've ever achieved greatness in Green Bay, but it was just a poorly run franchise from top to bottom.

Wasn’t it Whitehurst who the Bears tried to sign after he was released and he told them no. Always respected him for that….

You need more than great quarterback play to win championships (which are a TEAM accomplishment.) That's why judging an individual player by what his team accomplished or judging a team for not winning Super Bowls with a great quarterback will never be valid arguments. If Favre or Rodgers had top-10 defenses with any regularity, I'm sure we'd be talking about more Super Bowl wins for The Packers. But hey, as it stands we still have more Lombardis than over 75% of the league. Try harder, dude. 🤣🤦

David Whitehurst was obviously not living on a little planet We call Earth that day. But honestly this is nothing. He is not the first nor last player to do this. The real problem is the idea that a loss is “all the QB’s fault” while we win as team. Football more than any other sport is a team game. You win as a team and you lose as a team. On this day the Green Bay Packers played poorly as a team and lost accordingly. Maybe the members of the media should be pushing that instead of this.

Not, necessarily, SB 52 was a classic case of the QB, single-handedly, losing the Game, Tom Brady put up historic numbers, and, The, Dam Was About To Break, however, instead, of taking the sack, he forced the ball, (with the predictable result), at that moment, the Game was, effectively over, and, a moral victory turned into an actual one, but, true to form, he completely ducked blame for committing a fundamental error, (glad he did, though).

@@matthewdaley746 Completely disagree. The Patriots lost as a team, their defense didn’t play well at all, and for everything the offense did it wasn’t enough. And they lost. Also the NFL was never going to allow the most helped player the league has ever seen take or admit to any blame for the loss. As for proof of the help he was always given look no further than his last season when the NFL was forced by backlash to pull all the help from Tom and following that the so called goat was revealed as the mediocre bum he always was.

Also his entire run began with a call reversal that was an absolute fraud. The “Tuck Rule” game. Watch it sometime and actually look at Tom Brady’s hand position at the time of the hit. It’s completely down in front of him and not moving. Also keep in mind that the initial call was a fumble recovers by the Raiders. Had the NFL actually followed its rules the Raiders get the ball and the Patriots go home. And if you look you will find things like this made up his entire run.
