And it erased a good chunk of the culture. If you watch the documentary you'll realise that some Jopadhola christians even tried to burn down Nyakiriga, the holy worship area for the luo gods

This is amazing, I have learnt a lot. Erokamano K'Ogot. The cultural aspects were captivating particularly the naming ceremony. But how do you zero in on the final two names? How do you select the hens to throw?

You catch random chickens. You then assign them two different names [the names must have been premeditated before]. Then throw the chicken up. The one that remains up or goes higher than the other dictates the name

well done again KP, iriwo the luo nation kanyakla. I have heard a version that the "wound" suffered by Onongor, for that was the name of the ancestor of jopadhola, was not a wound per se, but he could not proceed with his brother Owiny because of his wife's pregnancy(the wound). Luo nation is big,we the kenya ones are just 1 part.

@@KPtravels001 In the 19th century persistent conflicts between the Nilotic Luo, Nilotic Maasai, Nilotic Kalenjin, Nilotic Iteso and Bantu Abaluhya groups forced the Bantu Abamarachi ( a subset of Abaluhya) of Busia to create forts as a defense mechanism against other groups. Forts had been used throughout out history including by the Portuguese(such as fort Jesus in Mombasa, Kenya and El Mina castle Ghana),by the British, the French etc .

@@KPtravels001 The Abamarachi had occupied parts of Ugenya and Marachi areas of Western Kenya and the territories had fortified homes . The original inhabitants of the area before Abamarachi occupation were the Abatachoni and Abadura who were replaced by the Abamarachi .

@@KPtravels001 Between 1870 and 1900 the Luo expansion by the clans from Ugenya led to occupation of areas previously subject to Abamarachi fortified jurisdiction . This was through conquest and assimilation of various Abamarachi clans .

Well, this particular part of history is not very clear. They mostly mention Onongor [famously known as Adhola] and Owiny only. Maybe because they were leaders of their particular groups during the great migration.

@@KPtravels001 Adhola and Owiny were dominant members and among the Nilotic Luo dominant members of a group are remembered and immortalized like Kenya Nationalists Tom Mboya, Oginga Odinga, or Uganda Presidents Milton Obote, Gen Tito Okello or Obama etc in present day .

@@KPtravels001 Historically dominant members were warriors or Chiefs or Ker etc like among the Luo-Shilluk under Reth in 635-645AD stopped the Turco-Egyptian Arab rulers of Egypt hence slavery did not move into the Luo groups . Or Chief Awich of Payira among Luo-Acholi of Uganda/Sudan who fought the British and protected Omukama Kabalega of Bunyoro Kitara .

The Nilotic Luo are diasporic(at least 20-25million spread out at least 9-12 territories including Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya ,DRC Congo, Chad, Central Africa Republic, Sudan/Lower Egypt, Ethiopia Gambella/Eritrea, Cameroon Luo- Bantu assimilated by late 1990's) and settled thousands years with skilled warriors(e.g Owiny,Adhola, Obando Mumbo, Ogutu Kipapi, Lela Kabanda, Tawo Kogot, Onyango Randar, Oracha Rambo, Lwanda Magere and others) through conquest, intermarriage and assimilation e.g Luo-Suba in Kenya, Tanzania and Luo-Babito/Luo-Langi/Luo-Kumam in Uganda with tendencies for large families thanks to history of polygamy in the past like all other AFRO groups .
