My supermarket work experience, the theory of bullsh*t jobs & what we can do about them.
My unusual job at a Singapore supermarket during unusual times was like a petri dish verification experiment of David Graeber's theory of Bullsh*t Jobs and how it causes social and psychological harm. Grateful as I am to have had a fallback during that period, 2 years later the memory of that work experience still troubles me. This is a story I’ve been wanting to tell but for the longest time I couldn’t figure out how. I hope this sharing can be helpful to anyone out there who finds themself unsure of what to do in the face of similar work circumstances.

I remember exactly the part time supermarket job i used to do as a "merchandiser" $8/hr. similar as yours totally bs (walk nonstop to look like working, and filling up those stupid holes and turning items with the front view packaging facing forward etc) and bad working cultures in the supermarket as well (i didnt even have a spot to sit or rest). After getting yelled at by my boss for trivial "mistakes" like not putting their pen in the exact spot or making a copy of something they Never told me to copy. My first job 64 years ago was stocking supermarket shelves in a well known supermarket in Glasgow, but as a side hustle I had to get rid of old eggs by breaking them and disposing of the very very smelly contents. It’s a strangely educational stint. Aside from an inside peak at the workings of the supermarket machinery it’s also eye opening in terms of social castes and snobbery. So strange how people turn their noses up once they assume they’re dealing with a blue collar worker. V sad.

I worked my way up the ladder and switched jobs every 5 years for a bigger salary and more responsibility. I started a side hustle and worked a stupid amount of hours a day on both after about a year. I did that for a few years until it brought me to tears. I was not making enough at the side hustle to leave the full time job. Then it happened… they wiped out my whole team and fired me while I was on vacation in the most cowardly way possible. That was the moment. I was all in. I did the math and started to figure out how to survive on what little I had. My wife and I decided life is short and I can automate the labor. Once it was in place we left the USA. We are on month 5 now in Europe. Headed to Southeast Asia in a few weeks. I now look back and say “being fired was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

If the jobs were so completely pointless, they should have just given the money to eligible people for free. Australia had a free money kind of system for people who had lost their job due to the virus and it worked fine. It has the added advantage that the jobless person can actually use their time for something productive like looking for work or building up their own business. You're absolutely right about how soul crushing it is to be ordered around by petty people who you don't respect. I'm so much happier since I've been able to move to remote freelance and can be my own boss. The clients are polite and reasonable and I can just move on to a different client if there's any problems.

I believe more and more ppl are leaving their BS jobs. In America, the great resignation during the pandemic was proof of that. Completely agree, but I find that the true changes in life that pivots you completely in direction are often not as depicted in movies etc (sudden, unplanned, destiny blah blah) but the result of thought, forwards planning, 1 degree shifts day by day over a longer period of time. There will come the time when you still need to take that leap of faith into the unknown, but coming to that time this way has a much higher chance of success. Take heart!

Money is just a number on the screen, there should be a minimum wage for everyone in the world. And people who have ambitions or want to work, they can earn on top of it. I heard this saying ages ago, can’t remember from whom or where. It’s something like….”If you wipe out half the employees in the Chrysler building, those corporates inside would still be able to operate as per normal”. Basically, it means so many jobs out there are pointless and have no real contributing values. Having said that though, I guess these jobs do ‘contribute’ in a way, and perhaps this contribution is even their main function, which is to give a chunk of population “income” so they can earn money to 1) pay taxes, 2) spend on all these material things mass-and-overly produced by corporates that are often the employers themselves. Having ‘a job’ gives people a false sense of security which makes people go get a loan, 5 credit cards, 2 new cars, 2 mortgages, etc. And this cycle goes on and on and on. It’s even more obvious now that technology is replacing a lot of human jobs and sometimes you question why a certain positions are still in place, but really, no matter how meaningless, it’s just to give people something to do, and income to spend on often meaningless materials. I don’t think this will change, because apparently we can’t afford to ‘correct’ the economy….and have invested too deeply in extreme capitalism, but I’m definitely all for not doing something that has no meaning to me just for the sake of money too. I laughed when you described the Covid supermarket job you did in SG. It’s so Singaporean 😂

Yes, we seen who the essential workers were when the pandemic was happening. The ppl who actually get goods to the place where ppl could buy the products or who can help you stay alive. Barge operators/workers, semi drivers, shelve stockers, nurses, doctors, paramedics etc, etc.

I am 24 years old, American. I just want to use the next 10 years to save and invest as much as I can. My deam is to have a small house, a little bit of land, a couple farm animals and time to just breathe. Not run around for some a**hole. It will be done. Just need to be patient. Good video 👍😊

hey Jean, i just started in investment banking and i somewhat resonate with your experience as a lawyer, but i'm trying to be positive and convince myself that my job isn't BS, adds value to society etc. what's your view on me 'forcing' this positivity?
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for this I think it’s such a great question 🤗🤓 In my own experience, when you’re doing something that aligns with your true nature and values, you feel it very intensely. For me it was giving happiness to people thru providing help thru yoga or enabling them to surf. Down the line (feels right but less fulfilling n intense) was working as an academic teacher n in hospitality serving people. Last was when I just felt I was helping no one but big corporates make more money. I think the truth comes from within so you shd look inside yourself. But aside from understanding your truth you also need to understand what path you r walking and where it leads to. If IB is a means to get you to a point where you can do smtg u love in a limited time period after, then during this period yes u need to be positive and keep your goals in minds eye! But don’t be positive and keep spending years of your life in smtg that’s not great for you without an end in sight - life’s too short to spend it on a job that’s bs to you. That’s my take 🦋🌻😅

@@JeanVoronkova Jalan Bisma? I used to stay up there where the road ended just after Villa Chempaka and was ricefields thereafter. It was like 30 years ago and back then it was a rather steep climb with gravel covered road. Takes a bit of finesse to drive the jeep up and slide down sometimes. Many small crashes happens often. Now it seems paved and somewhat flatten. Miro's on the right is good & very romantic, always love eating there. I share your alarm on what's happening in the central. That's why when I first saw the videos my first thought was you. Hoping you weren't near there. Some roads/bridges washed away. Quite scary indeed. And many of the nice places I like were in areas susceptible to landslides (seems more unstable then Jln Bisma actually) It may not be very widespread, but it is worrisome as we never know where it may happen and it'll raise a few hairs each time you're there. Better wait till weather is better and stick to safer places first. Take care!

middle management staff are mostly mindless people needed in the system to get things moving the way their boss wants to see , they are yes man and a boss pleaser . working under these people you can only say yes . and there's no need to reason out with them as it will bring your dignity down even further . And how much they are making a month , its pathetic.

@@JeanVoronkova 100% dear Jean :) Been watching quite a few of your vids since I discovered you a couple days ago and we have gone through so many similar developments and realizations about what truly matters in life and what type of life we want to live. I don't think I have ever talked to anyone or watched any video where basically everything you say resonates with me. The difference is you actually have already created the life you always longed for and I am still stuck in my fears of making such a big change and overwhelmed with how to make it happen. p.s. Besides surfing scuba diving is also my big passion, which makes it a bit more complicated to choose the perfect place to live ;) you should also try it in case you haven't already. it complements surfing waves perfectly...
