I briefly spoke to Mr Havers in 2000, Savile Row, London. I apologised for bothering him as I knew that he would be busy, but asked if I could ask a quick question. He was very polite and said that I could. I thanked him and asked about his experience of making the movie: Chariots of Fire, he answered very warmly and that it was fantastic to be part of such an iconic film 🎥 👍🇬🇧

It was years before I watched it, always assumed it was a load of pro-Empire, flag waving, Oxbridge Merchant Ivory twaddle. The actual movie moved me very deeply, not least the idea of the true Olympic spirit (no trainer!) coming to terms with the modern world.

I adore that film, mainly because Iain Charleson who played the brilliant Scottish missionary and runner was so heartbreakingly good. The character he played was a missionary in China and died in a Japanese prison camp during the war, whilst Iain was the first famous actor to insist that when he died (far, far too early) the fact that he died of AIDS should be made public.
